As most 3500kgs coachbuilt/ a class are probably overweight, and making them lighter is likely to reduce quality and possibly strength, would a better strategy be to petition the goverment to recognise M1 as a separate category and set weights appropriately for the classe?

I allow 20kg per person for clothes and personal stuff, ie kindle, laptop, phone, charger, shoes etc. seemed to work ok for 3 months in Spain and my other half did weigh it all and was quite content with that allowance.

Look I’m not coming if the dog isn’t included.
25kg and a tonne of food. He brings his own farts.

Where are we going anyway?
More clothes for Scotland than for Spain.

EU guideline is 1 x 11kg Aluminium bottle which is what the German manufacturers go by.

Hymer mention MIRO, but they are only paying lip service to it. There is no explanation in their brochure. They do mark the weights they give with * but what that means is anyones guess as I can't find any other reference. Well not here at least

They state it in information at the back of the full price list.

Looks like their web site has changed you can’t get it in different languages any more?

Always changes for Caravan Salon & they don't put the full downloadable price lists for a couple of months. Seems harder to find your way around. Don't mind it being in German as I always look at the German version as the UK one never has the full range of models.

Fishing tackle if I take all my course fishing gear possibly about 50kg maybe a bit more
Blow up kayak
Groundsheet
Lump hammer
Wind break

Based on my limited experience, here are some thoughts for you to accept/reject, based on what I have done.

When I was going through the same exercise as part of speccing our new (and first) MoHo, I weighed my wife's handbag. Ouch.

Ipads, phones & bits.
Atlas, ASCI book, All the Aires
Folding step?
Vacuum cleaner
Coffee machine
Inverter
Brolly
Spare toilet cassette
Strikeback / Growler
European plugs and adapters, polarity checker

I lost weight by..
Removing steadies
Removing carpet mostly
Got a SOG, so no chemicals
Getting just one Alugas cylinder (but add the weight of adapters)

We store stuff in those 'Really Useful Boxes'. Their weight adds up.

These days I use a choice of two Nav Apps, CoPilot, and TomTom on the phone, though I carry the standalone one for reassurance. It'll go next season.

You mention toaster, I guess you do not have a grill in your oven.

Hope that is useful.

A challenge here can be the size of van and number of people on board. A 10m A class will have many different “essentials “ to a 5.5m PVC.

As noted some vans may only visit full facility sites. Others might wild camp forever. And then there will be full timers.

With a small 5.4m PVC and only 60l water off grid is max 2 days . But don’t have space for lots of toys even if essential (even reel for the EHU cable has gone now as hand coiled squashes in easier). But I carry heavy e-bike mtb style and a spare battery for it as I have no battery or inverter to recharge (I’m in that pitiful 75ah league) with no space for a second battery). The bike is essential as is its tow bar carrier.

And since when were most of us lucky enough to only weigh 75kg?

Essential to one is luxury to another. Paramount to me is a couple of cases of beer!

For a trip of more than a couple of weeks we would definitely be carrying more clothes, especially for winter sun trips. But also spare towels and bedding.
We don’t have a tv so carry games and kindles. I guess they offset each other.
Very thought provoking exercise though, Jim. What exactly are essentials??

I have just sold my van privately (I've bought another), and today I was emptying it out. I took the opportunity to weigh everything that cam out. It came to 170Kg. That does not include bikes, 2nd battery or solar, if I add in Jim's figures for these, the figure becomes 237.5Kg.
Just for communal essentials. No food or clothing.
I can't see anything I've taken out that won't be going into the new van. However, it seems to have a decent payload (600Kg), so not concerned. Interesting though.

Some payload 950 kg for a 3500 kg van ? Doesn’t look right to me

Cant be right, GVM variation of 1000kgs payload variation of 70kgs. I can believe the payload at the higher gross weight but the payload at 3500kgs not a chance, my guess = hardly any.

More like 350kgs.

Factor in Alloy wheels, tow bar, sat tv dish, different engine spec 130 v 180, canopy, auto/manual gear box. Blimey the list goes on. Which is why naively thought some might like some differentiation and understanding between additional motorhome upgrades and actually what they might personally carry, the mind boggles at trying to work out how many pairs of trousers somebody might take. Maybe a rule of thumb could be what people lack to fly somewhere ie 23 kg per person - I am sure we don’t carry that much clothes wise. Then there is the food in the fridge freezer a well as non fridge stuff.

No need to factor those in if those things are already within the MIRO. After MIRO Everything that you add from a towbar to your toothbrush comes off your payload. That bit is not difficult, we can all work it out.

The reason for the thread is not to boggle your mind about the number of trousers rather to find a reasonable average. ie How much stuff does the average motorhomer need/take on board so we can quickly work out if that 4 berth motorhome actually has the payload for the average motorhome family. (y)

The figures I've settled upon so far are in the first post of this thread. https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/motorhome-payload-scandal.204676/

The next step I think is to incorporate it into a spreadsheet form so we can instantly see the suitability. We can then take it a stage further and easily list the realworld payloads of all new vans (y)

Sorry but for something that is meant to make it easy I am totally confused which is a pity as I thought the whole objective was to make it easy. Anyhow fortunately I am quite clear myself on where I am with my own payload so no issues.

Sorry you find the concept of what an average payload is so hard to understand. I don't think I can put it any simpler.
