In two places where the Cab meets the body ( one each side) on our 2022 McLouis the sealant has split along the length of the joint.
I intend to repair with Sikaflex 522. ( No apparent ingress so its a preventative repair)

Question I have is...would you "fill" the crack and build up a little over the joint?..or would you cut out some of th original sealant to allow more new sealant in?

Thoughts please?

Cheers

You definitely need to remove the old sealant as Jimbohorlicks has said.

However only being three years old why can't you get it done under warranty?

If you start cutting out and under the joint you’ll make it ten times worse Plus you may cut through the roof. Last time I looked Mclewis had .05 mm Ali roof
Edit older van so roof may have changed

What’s the bonding properties of old Sika/Pura and new Sika/Pura lashed on top? Does it stick/seal and stay stuck/sealed?
Yes Puraflex sticks to anything-good for bonding and sealing- Sikaflex (depending which ) will stick to Ali, but let’s go on some plastics after a few years - got the T shirt for that about 20 plus years ago😉😁

2022 I would think it’s still under warranty? Good clean up, mask up both sides and seal / smooth over, pull both tapes off at same time 👍 I use Puraflex from Toolstation- half price of Sikaflex, made by Sikaflex 😉

While on the subject of sealing. I have a window to remove and reseal. Will puriflex do the job.?

So it bonds to the old sealant okay with no specific prep other than the obvious cleaning?

Yes definitely 👍you can take the window out to do it properly or if it’s hard to get to from inside you can simply clean, masking tape 2mm onto window and bodywork then smooth with a wet finger and pull both tapes at once 👍it will last years😉 Hardest job is masking up 😄

Don’t listen to all the crap that you cannot remove windows/ rooflights etc, you can using a sharp scraper or if you mask all around a multi cutter (buzz saw) work brilliant- takes less than 2 mins 😉

So long as the old stuff is not cracked or peeling it will stick/seal -if it is then clean off carefully 😉👍
In the past on roofs where cab meets roof if it looked dodgy I have clean all the joints and then 30 mm D mould on top then sealed down both sides to make it neat👍 I use a Upvc solvent cleaner and lots of paper towel 😉

Harvey, just for your information because I know you like tinkering use Puraflex for sealing and bonding anything 👍If you want instant bonding then I use Siroflex Grip and Grab adhesive, with that use a good bead and make sure it’s in place before you press it into place because once pressed on it isn’t moving/ clean surplus off with a plastic scraper then cleaner and paper towel 👍

Thanks for the clarification Terry

I’ve not got any leaks but I figure with the age of my seals, masking up and applying an additional layer isn’t going to hurt! Just wasn’t sure of Puraflex or 522’s ability to bond well to itself! ✔️
