A question for the hive mind...

I have been with the RAC for years and use Tesco Clubcard to get the annual fee down.

The renewal is December 1st and the pack arrived today. We have everything Inc home, Europe and personal. But £397!!!

So. What alternatives are there? I am a CAMC member. Is their cover any good?

The RAC fudged when asked about a 7m Elddis 175.

Thanks for any advice.

Just let my RAC lapse following the dreadful experience of others on here who have broken down in France.

Nationwide Flexplus current account - £13 per month.
Breakdown for any car or van you are in Europe wide, up to 7.5 ton(?) & I think 8 mtres
Phone insurance
Travel insurance- 30 days standard, can be increased - we pay extra £80 for up to 72 days.
Also a decent bank account!

I'm looking at switching when all my covers run out seems like a no brainer

Nationwide bank account?
Lloyds Bank have a similar scheme but there are the usual weight (3500kg) and width restrictions that mean they will not recover the bigger motorhomes. Are Nationwide more relaxed about this?

The RAC will not cover any van out of the UK , over 20 years old. And they are useless in this country as well.

It’s very comprehensive and covers all your qualifying vehicles and includes those you might be travelling in as a passenger. The relevant MoHo maximum qualifying dimensions are U.K.& EU 7.5t GVW, 8m length, 2.55m width.

At twice the price, that's why I moved to Nationwide. 👍

Martin Lewis recommended these for cars, but noticed they also cover campervans. Not used them but will be switching to one of their schemes when our cars come up for renewal. Our van has cover from Fiat under their extended warranty for another year.

I am with RAC Arrival but have never had to use them. There is no limit on size/weight and there is a discount for C&CC members.

We have had the same for years and never had to call them but we too are thinking of nationwide we had an account for years but not plus account.
I have started to look at the terms and conditions and one thing I'm concerned about is they say we will recover you if you have an accident if its not your fault.
What happens should it be your fault and sometimes it's disputed?

I'm afraid we have the old, no longer available to new buyers, HSBC Account. I just know people here have it and use it. Maybe someone who has can shed some light on the subject?

edit:- Just seen the above.

I'm with RAC Arrival via CCC. I don't venture abroad. This September my clutch on the MH burnt out on a very steep hill on A470 in Wales . I cannot fault the RAC. I'm a single traveller with a dog that's on meds. Police had to come out as I was in a dangerous spot until a kind farmer towed me up the road to a better place for both me and the recovery. They came out as quickly as they could and arrived about 8pm. As it was not possible to recover me home that evening they were going to put me up in a hotel O/N in Caernarfon, and recover me home the next day. I had broken down somewhere south of Barmouth. The commercial recovery truck arrived just before 8pm . But we were not going to north Wales , we were going to Wolverhampton where a taxi would take me a hotel . we arrived at Burke Bros yard just after midnight. Taxi came and took me to a hotel in Birmingham( was the only hotel RAC could get that would take my dog. We arrived just before 2 am. to a 4 * hotel suite ( lounge , kitchen bedroom and ensuite). Next day RAC rang , the external recovery co could only get the MH to my home the following day so they have hired me a car so I could get home. Taxi to hire company . I got home about 2pm . Went to my garage that was was going to repair MH to let them know. Midday on the Thursday, phone call from recovery driver where he had to go( he was by the pub near my house) So we drove jut a few hundred yds to the garage. Clutch is all renewed ( cost just over £600) it had disintegrated , ive only done 37k miles but the MH is 20 yrs old. I cannot fault RAC but am dreading how much my premium will be at renewal . Goodness know how much all this cost RAC but I think I had my monies worth . First time call out for MH but I do have my car on same policy and used them over the years on the car(s)

Last renewal with RAC end of this year, with the Tesco Clubcard vouchers I swapped before they were devalued. Will look elsewhere at end of next year, terrible value but OK with the vouchers.

Van is covered by VW Assist until June next year, and will still be under 6 years so can renew the All-in-one plan for another couple of years.

Looks like they don’t cover vans the way I read it🤔🤔

  • What vehicles are eligible for European cover?
UK vehicles only: Saloon cars, hatchbacks, estate cars, MPV’s and motorcycles, so long they are less than 10 years old. Cover may be extended to a 15-year age Limit provided an extra premium is paid. Cover is restricted to a maximum of 4 passengers and the driver.Sorry but light commercial vehicles, vans, mini buses, pick-ups and motorised caravans cannot be covered. Caravans and small trailers attract an extra premium of £30.99. Caravans are restricted to a maximum length of 7 metres, height 3 metres and width 2.25 metres. Trailers are restricted to a length of 2.25metres.

RAC - just a week ago I called for recovery - told 6 hours. Richford (local) who had been passed to by RAC - 3 hours. Called a local recovery firm - £95 there in 20 minutes.
RAC - don't bother

Probably not much good because it depends on renewal dates but buying your breakdown with your insurance is usually much cheaper. I have it with Comfort Insurance. It won't be RAC or AA but a local recovery company.

Which brings me to the 2nd point, why RAC or AA. For my car I have been with other providers or 20 odd years or more and always had just as good service. Autoaid, GEM, Greenflag, - there are dozens out there, much cheaper and similar service. They all will use the same local recovery companies. Not sure which ones do motorhomes but work a Google.

As long as you're aware of this term in the policy "(i) The most we will pay for all claims arising from any one breakdown is £5,000.". Fine for the UK, but you'd better not need an expensive recovery from Europe.
