Hello, we will be attending a couple of festivals next year and the information states that whilst water is available it is to fill containers only, and you cannot drive up to them.

Couple of questions.

  • What containers do people normally use for ease of transport / storage/ volume etc?
  • Our van has a Whale water connection which we have only ever used when getting water from a tap. Can this just be removed by hand?

We have a 20L water carrier, I find it easier to lift the hatch in the floor and remove the fresh water tank lid, I also have a 12v pump that I can use to pump it in via the filler cap hole although I’ve never used it in this van.

Minor point but garden watering cans etc are not made from food grade plastic so may well contain nasties like Cadmium and other heavy metals. Same goes for hose pipes that are not specifically food grade

My wife lets me walk back and forth about 20x times with a bucket and fill into the top of the tank.
Only takes me about 45 minutes, depending on how far the tap is away from where we site the van.
Very good exercise for someone getting bloody older!!!
You know what they say, "No pain, no gain!"..........who the bloody hell thought that saying up?
"It's killing Me!" :swear:

I do this, funnel stays in place thanks to a strong magnet which is fixed with enough layers of Gorilla Tape that it has not moved in five years or damaged any paintwork.

Also carry a hose so I can do a major fill directly from a site tap, but this works well for a small top up and I find it quite relaxing to walk to a tap, fill container, walk back, empty, repeat, repeat . . YMMV!

One of these and a collapsible bucket works for us.

There are many write ups on how to convert these Whale systems to a conventional filler cap on the outside, use google. We carry a 25L plastic Jerry can and a bespoke foldable sack truck that allows me to tow it behind my electric bike. Have a small pump with hose and wiring that plugs into a 12v socket in the moho garage to transfer the water.

I use a collapsible 10 litre container - it fokds completely flat. I added a short length of pipe to the lid by drilling a 10mm hole and pushing an 11 mm clear pipe through - this makes it easy to fill by pushing the pipe well into the van's filler hole. To easily first push the pipe through the smaller hole I dip the end in boiling water to soften it, it then hardens on cooling and makes a perfect fit. The pipe is the clear type available at most camping supplies shops, boat chandlers etc. The container was from Amazon.

We use a 10 watering can plus a 10 litre plastic gerry can kept for carrying water only to fill up the van tank.
We also use the 5 litre water bottles for our drinking water and top those up as well.
Simply, as we get older folding trolley, water containers, bungee, whale pump 12 volt supply, wait while it fills, no lifting.

I bought a roller water container with the intention of storing it empty in the shower using suction straps when travelling. Only when I tried to store it did I notice that the shower walls were textured and the suckers did not work. I gave it away unused.

We have 2x 8 litre plastic bottles that we bought in the supermarket. We can take out the lounge seat cushion and take off a small wooden hatch and there is the water tank. Unscrew the top and pour in the water. When the plastic bottles reach their EOL we buy 2 more.

And when one of the plastic bottles is empty, cut it where marked on the photo. Then use the top (with the lid off, natch) as a funnel straight into the water hatch and pour the water from the other bottle(s). We keep the home made funnel in the van and use the fold flat containers as in my post #14.

I don't need a funnel, the opening is large enough to pour strait in.

Yes, it’s true one doesn’t need to use a funnel but doing so makes it easier when you have a full bottle to pour. We find that as you tilt the bottle towards the opening, some water can spill onot the floor. The funnel just raises and widens the opening. But each to their own. 👍

Ah but I'm still young enough to be able to pour without the shakes 😂 (no offence intended)
