Public footpaths walk and unpleasant dogs and owners with no recall

That is an offence by the dog owner.

Where there’s blame there’s a claim 😉😊

Would have been a waste of time as the owner was a local drug user who was actually in my class at school and would have put money on he’d be into drugs. I’d certainly have been upset if my bike had been damaged as I was on my carbon road bike, thankfully only a cut knee.

I think you did the correct thing by staying still with hands by your sides.

I was nervous of dogs when young as a German Shepard egged on by its companion Jack Russel, jumped a low wall and ran at me, getting a little nip at my ankles. I was 12 at the time. The lady in the house saw and made me stroke the dog which I dint want to do. I was always wary after that.

But I have had dogs and learned to read the signs, The current Lab was nervous when young so I always put her on a lead if I see other people coming. ( and dogs)

As in all walks of life there are people who are responsible and those that are not unfortunately, more ignorant and arrogant actually.

Good to hear no damage and a small cut.

Very frustrating 😡

I absolutely love dogs and have owned many. A lot of them were older rescued dogs. However, I've always been afraid of other people's dogs, after I was attacked when I was younger, so I can understand the feelings loose dogs can cause.

I always used to have this product at home; a few cans here and there, as we could have anything up to 6 dogs at a time. We only ever had 2 dogs fights and this product worked each time. It's literally air in a can but the sound can stop dogs in their tracks; not always, of course, but it's handy to have around and easy to carry.

Sadly, I don't have any dogs now but I'd still recommend this product.

Oh. Sorry to hear that .totally unacceptable. The owner needs to be reported to the police for allowing a dog loose off a lead and not under control. Maybe you can contact the local dog warden and advise a description and location. Most wardens take this sort of encounter seriously and will look out for the dog and owner and advise them accordingly.
We will just put it down to experience it was a place we were passing through
I did mention it to the pub landlord when I also mentioned the dog owners had also left this gift

I hate dog owners that do this as well.

It’s not dog owners per se, it’s just that dogs are often an extension of the entitlement some owners feel who don’t give a damn.

Mine are never off lead in public as their recall and prey drive are terrible.

Had to boot a couple of dogs unfortunately. One was severely biting mine, off lead and attacked us. Owners couldn’t give a toss, others were small terrier types, one actually bit my trousers so had a swift kick before it bit me. The owner then had a go at me like I was in the wrong.

Drives me nuts!

Put them on a lead unless their recall is perfect, it’s not hard is it?

Have to say that our experiance in Holland is that dogs are well trained in leads and unfazed by bikes unlike their English cousins

But why should someone have to buy anything to sort out the unwanted attention of someone else’s dog??

I have a dog but if someone else’s dog off or on a long lead rushed me that I felt threatened I would sort the dog myself to be honest.
We once met a dog on a walk in Spain you might have struggled with. We were walking on a minor road which went through a farm. A group of men were slaughtering a pig, it was hung from a beam in an open barn and they were draining off the blood. A large and very excited dog was running about. Fortunately, two of the men used sticks to keep it away from us but without them I suspect it might have made a meal of our dog which was small enough for me to carry away.

I'm off to buy an air horn - hopefully that will sort out the precious 'rescue' dog and it's owner

I think I’ll just have to buy a new overcoat and trousers

Your Patterdale must be very placid.
Ours would have been defensive.

If dogs run up to our Patterdale and they are off the lead I slip her lead and let her decide what action she wants to take.

I like to even the playingfield 😊
He has been injured by bigger dogs as a young dog he was owned by badger baiters and the threw him in withe big dogs and had to take his chances ended up with the end of his nose bitten off and his bottom lip torn off he will still defend himself but I don’t want him scrapping with the injuries he has already and make them worse.😊

Dogs are often blamed but they are not necessarily the problem.
One example here is couple with a dog, if I meet her walking their dog, it mingles with mine no problem. She is relaxed and laid back about it. He is uptight when encountering other dogs, so I give him a wide berth. Same dog, different pack members. The dog picks up on it's owners, if they are anxious, the dog is.
Too many people have dogs but don't consider basic canine psychology.
A dog is not an accessory, it's a commitment.

Absolutely right.

Stop treating the dog as if it's a small human, and treat it like a dog.

It'll be much happier, and have a better understanding of what behaviour is acceptable.

We've had rescue dogs for decades, but now taking a break. Had some very abused and nervous dogs to retrain.
