Another question from me. You can tell I’m doing some post holiday Motorhome sorting!

On holiday in Scotland this summer, we had a couple of occasions when the van got really hot because the sun was shining on the windscreen. We closed the electric roller blind but that then got hot and radiated heat into the cabin.

I was thinking about buying a silver screen and inserting this between the windscreen and roller blind when needed.

Ideally it would be a silver screen about 240 cm x 95 cm but something close to that would do if I could find something off the shelf and therefore a bit cheaper. I’m not too worried about the installation qualities – it’s mainly to reflect the heat back.

I’’ve done a bit of searching on eBay, Amazon etc and can’t find anything big enough. Any ideas where I might find something suitable?

Thanks.

Chris

Foil bubble insulation,

I use this in winter and summer.

You can get larger sizes. I had to trim the roll down for our hymer.

In 42c plus heat in Summer, the inside of the cab windows is around the same. Put this between the screen inside and the shade (you can put it on the outside - though it will need keeping in-place from winds etc (no good in winter as it gets wet)).

Makes a huge difference.

Great idea. Thanks. Can get it even cheaper than that on eBay it seems. I could even cut out some smaller bits to put behind side window blinds as needed!

To stop the heat in the van you need the reflector on the outside of the windscreen If inside it will heat up the space between the reflector and the windscreen and then the van.

I think it's a wind up said he was in Scotland.

We have a similar blind not really noticed any problems when it's been 35 deg, keeps the van a lot cooler than if you left the blind up.

Our front blind says to leave at least a 1/3 gap to allow it not to get too hot behind it. I think insulation on the inside might be risking an expensive repair.

We have a silver screen (50 euros Moroccan version) but the other method if you have the fantastic fan leave the front blind open for the last couple of inches and leave the fan o thermostatic extract.

Shouldn't affect an aluminum blind they are double skinned with insulation in the middle, a mini version of an insulated roller garage door

Yep. High quality problem huh!

Not the cheapest but the best thing we have bought for the MH,even the OH agrees 👍

Looks like you got lucky. Just emaiuled them and got this reply.

Thank you for your enquiry,

We are very Sorry, but nothing for your vehicle at all, we also no longer make bespoke screen covers or sell the material off the roll.

O'Leary's sold internal screen material on a roll by the mtr, no idea if they still have it but worth a phonecall.

I think the issue is the build up of hot air between the windscreen and blind. Someone said it can damage the dashboard. I guess the key for an internal one is to get it as close to the glass as possible - both to protect the dash etc and also to stop heat transfer into the cabin.

As a cheapo method why don't you try the deicing screens for cars, you may need 2 to cover most of the screen, but they are relatively cheap, around 1.99.
Won't cover all the screen but will reflect most of the sun off the screen and cut down the internal heating effect.

We have an old set of internal screens from a Ducato MH so I just use the front part which sits on the inside of the windscreen held on by suckers, it leaves a bit of a gap at the edges so still lets a little light in which stops it being too gloomy but it works a treat.

We have Taylormade external screens we use them in the Summer to reflect heat, Winter to keep warm.

Just to add we do have external screens too but when parking near a town etc to go in for a shuftie, obviously we can't put them on so the internal one is what we use.

I would be wary of putting anything between internal blinds and side windows as they are a plastic material and you may get damage from the heat build-up!
External screens aren’t the way to go with a privacy screen!

It makes a massive difference if you are trying to keep the habitation cool with a/c.

People expect to park in direct sunlight with windows open and walk into a fridge. Them complain the the A/C they spent £2,000 plus on does not work.

Simples.

Great comments about the screen needing to be outside. I forgot about that. Not to imperative in winter.

Sorry to drag this thread up.

Does anyone know if you can get external screens for side windows? If so, would you be as so kind to let me know where.

Many thanks.
