Hello to all fellow Funsters who like to travel solo. I thought it would be fun to arrange a tour of the Peak District which has stunning scenery, great walking and cycling and fantastic local friendly pubs. I wanted to see if any of you might be interested.

I thought of the Solo Traveller as I would like to meet and get to know other people who travel solo like myself, but non-solo travellers would also be welcome to come along of course. I hope this might inspire other such adventures as for example I would like to go skiing in the winter and it is always more fun with others as well as the security of travelling as a group.

I thought of the Peak District because of its awe-inspiring scenery and central location. I have done some research and put together a proposed itinerary which would cost a total of £134 per van, this can be adapted of course if there are other views and idea's. The itinerary is as follows: -

Site One – Friday 18th September (3 Nights) - £30 per van
Middlehills Farm Campsite – Grangemill, Matlock, Derbyshire. DE4 4HY

Site Two – Monday 21st September (2 Nights) – £24 per van
Lathkill Wild Campsite - Monyash Road, Over Haddon, Bakewell, Derbyshire, DE45 1JF – Travel distance 11 miles

Site Three – Wednesday 23rd September (2 Nights) - £60 per van includes EHU.
Barlow Country Club - Crowhole, Barlow, Dronfield, Derbyshire, S18 7TP – Travel distance 14 Miles

Site Four – Friday 25th September (2 Nights) - £20 per van
Burrs Manor Wild Camping – Chelmorton, Buxton, Derbyshire. SK17 9SW – Travel distance 18 Miles

Each site has been chosen for location and availability and all have pubs within a short walking distance. Sites 1, 2 and 4 are considered wild campsites with limited onsite facilities but pubs and other facilities are within easy reach. Travel to each new site is between 11 and 18 miles which would help with battery charging, I chose one EHU site to allow for full charging during the tour.

Details of each site can be found on https://www.pitchup.com/

I look forward to hearing if anyone else might be interested in this. It could only be a small group, between 5 and 8 vans as these are not large sites, the EHU site for example only has 8 current spaces.

Thanks to you all

Be aware the Lincoln motorhome show is on near those dates and gets a big Fun attendance. 👍

Thanks Tonka

The dates can be adjusted to allow for that. I'm just trying to ascertain what interest there might be at the moment.

Great idea and good for you for trying.

Irrespective of dates, for me the pricing of the no facility type sites is too much. £30 a night needs to be luxury with ehu posh showers all sorts. Quackers site which hss so much space, water, grey and black waste, good pubs in wslking distance is less than half that. So regardless that it might have been of interest, regrettably I'm out.

There's only one of the sites coated at £30/nt though Rob.

OP well done for trying this, hope you get plenty of takers, as you say, it's a beautiful part of the world. You've obviously put alot of thought into this.

I would be very interested, except for site 3, which is too pricey.
An extra day at site 2 and an extra night at site four might work.

Thank you for the feedback Rob. There are many other sites that could be chosen at a lower cost I am sure. I was just trying to illustrate my idea with an example of an itinerary. I'm new to this forum so it's my first stab at putting something together that I would like to do, but I value your thoughts on the pricing

Many thanks

That's a very good idea. I will have a look for a lower cost alternative too. I had 2 reasons for the number of sites, 1 to see a lot of the area and 2 to allow for battery charging so generators are not needed as I know a lot of people don't like these which is understandable. I would welcome your thoughts on this.

Many thanks

This is a really good idea/itinerary

I think you'll find most Funsters can manage without resorting to generators... which most of us, AFAIK, hate.
AFAIK? never heard that lol. Honestly I'd prefer all sites to be like 1, 3 & 4 but I'm néw to off grid camping and not sure if batteries will last 9 days with just a few miles driving to charge. I'd appreciate any advice on this. I have solar and don't use much electrical equipment just a TV for a bit, broadband router etc. If you think we could go without EHU then there are many many options.

Thanks

Simon

I may have misread the first post. For example site 1 is that £30 in total or £30 per night? If the former it's a good pricing.

As for off grid in September for 9 nights, a majority of funsters could struggle, even with our good battery systems. Distance driving between sites won't be enough for a good charge input, even with a B2B. If weather is cloudy solar will probably not keep pace. So a hook up to recover could be important.

Yes the prices are total for each site. That was my thinking that a hook up site could be needed for ensuring adequate charging. The total cost is £134 for the whole trip which I thought sounded reasonable for 9 nights. I struggled to find a cheaper hook up site that had sufficient pitches available in the areas I wanted and also avoiding longer distances.

Thanks for your advice, it's very useful for a novice lol

Sounds interesting but the cost is a bit steep unless your local I'm too far away and would need to be up that way. For a first rally maybe 1 location if your aiming at solo travellers cost is a consideration. Get onto some sights and see what discount they will give you

If it tan on from Drax it would be an idea as many of us are around the area

I think it’s a great idea and well done for trying to sort something, I hope you get some good results..👍🏼😎

Like the idea and the area, and frankly I don’t think the total cost is too bad given prices this year! I unfortunately can’t commit as I have a pending house move and not sure exactly when that will be.
Good luck, I hope it comes together for you and thanks for taking the time to put this together.

It depends on where your coming from and individual circumstances .
If i was running from home its approx £200 in fuel
And unfortunately I still have to work now and again as I'm not retired YET (counting down the days /years
So no work no money add that into the mix add another 0 on the end of the fuel in real terms
I'm sure with the limited availability.of spaces this rally will fill quiet quickly I like the idea of it exploring and area
Ramfan007
go for it get your deposits in and book your sites as it is hard enough to get a static rally organised. Remember you have offered ehu but the sites are still selling pitches so you need to get it booked or they may not be available.
Have you read the info about planning a rally on here contact Broken Link Removed
Good luck with it .you have a lot to do in a short time
It's is a lovely area and looks like you have done some great resesrch I hope you can get it rolling forward 😀
Anyone who is willing to give up their time to put a rally together gets my respect. Go for it maybe next year I can plan it in (y)

Hello everyone

Thank you for all your helpful comments. I have been giving some thought to the single issue that accounts for the higher cost, I.e. the need for EHU to recharge batteries.

I have a 3300w generator which after looking into how batteries recharge on a 230v hookup will recharge a 100ah battery from 50% to 80% in about 2 hours.

I have done some tests on the noise level it makes under full load and if placed 75m away it is no more noisy than everyday background noise. A handy app that measures noise levels was very useful alongside the formula that shows how noise reduces over distance.

If I make up a 50m cable which when connected to your 25m hookup cable would allow anyone who needed to recharge to be able to.

This would reduce the cost by £40 overall to £104 total and open up a much larger number of sites.

Having stayed on sites like these myself there will be little problem finding a place far enough away to site the generator when needed so as not to disturb anyone.

I'd be interested in your views on this solution?

Thanks

Simon

Me too it deserves a good turn out good luck with it

Great idea and I would be interested if the dates didn't clash with other commitments.
I am a retired photographer and just about all of the trips I do have some element of photography included. I have had the Peak District on my list for a while. If the dates change or another gathering is planned me and my lazy greyhound would be interested. I think the cost you proposed was very

Great idea, but I‘m not able make those dates. I’m staying in Cornwall the week after and will have to do some work the week before!

It seems that many of us already have plans for September. Perhaps it might be better to organise something for next year?
I was coming to that conclusion. It is very short notice though and I was considering maybe arranging it for March/April next year instead.

Next year seem like a better idea BUT if it's a cold winter, March & April might be a bit early without EHU's even though you will have your generator with you, batteries in cold weather are not very efficient. 🤔

March April sounds good I get away with 4 days off grid through the winter male it late April it could run.into the may day bank.holiday for those who are working
