DoEs anyone have problems (parking, sites ,airesetc) towing car trailer behind 28ft mh. Thinking of doing uk and europe towing small car on trailer

Strictly speaking trailers of any sort are not allowed on French aires. You could be moved on though I have only once actually seen this happen and that was a popular aire.

This may or may not be interesting to you, but met up with a british canal boat at an aire a few years ago. They had a car. They left it at train stations and caught the train back to where they had left it and put it to where they wanted it.
By all accounts all train station car parks in the sticks in France are free.
Radical idea of taking 2 vehicles but it will open a lot more campsites/aires for you

Failing that, try walking (y)

Hi Martin, thanks for your suggestion but we have tried it here in the UK a few times and have decided that having a car at our disposal is what we would prefer (not so newbie now lol).
You will find that things are very different in Europe. Lots of Aires and campsites are within easy walking distances of town and city centres or public transport that actually runs.

I am parked at the moment on an Aire at Moraira in Spain within 250 metres of the centre of the resort and 300 metres from the beach. Earlier we stayed at a campsite on the beach outside of Barcelona with a free shuttle bus into the centre of the city. Even if we did not want to use it there was a railway station a short walk away that we could have used to get into the city.

We carry a scooter to visit places we can't reach from an Aire or campsite but it rarely gets used.

It will also depend upon how you want to use your motorhome and when. Staying in one place for long periods you will need other transport, but then hire cars in Spain are dirt cheap outside of the peak periods.

We prefer to move on frequently in short hops. If we wanted to stay for long periods we would find it easier to use a car and caravan and stay in campsites.

I’ve used hundreds of French aires towing my trailer and never been moved. There is no official body policing aires and if anyone told me to move I’d politely tell them to mind their own business!

I mean chairs, camp equipment are not suppose to be used on aires but again I’ve seen many many people doing this so don’t let anyone put you off going on aires with a trailer.

The aire I saw someone removed from is a municipal aire and the bloke who collects the fee was the one who asked them to move so it probably was his business.
I have also put out chairs where there is room but they are easily put away if needed.

never had a problem at 8.7mtrs and towing a smart car on trailer or sometimes the car is flat towed and not trailered
something to consider is a motor mover on the trailer as suggested previously
i find that so much easier when you arrive and you can move the trailer into tighter spaces if required plus i cannot see the trailer behind the motor home unless a small amount of lock/turn is applied to the steering
they are easily installed and regularly found second hand on ebay
Smart car also has a tow bar to move the trailer when i need to

We tow a trailer with smart car and use campsites as a norm never experienced any issues, sometimes park the trailer somewhere on site out of the way but other than that no problem.
We have a motor mover which is particularly handy on a one or two night stop over where the car isn’t required so stays on the trailer.
Maybe a little advanced planning I have in the past emailed a site to give a heads up to our van dimensions (7.9 mts + approx 3 mtr for the trailer) and all well.
I wouldn’t be overly concerned just give it a go.

agree with the pre planning part we are 7.5m motorhome and 5m trailer, it works but only with pre planning

Well that's put me off......

We have a 7m MH and were thinking of getting a tow bar fitted so we can tow our boat. Turns out fitting the tow bar will not leave much change out of £800. Then there is the length.....7m MH and 6.3m boat on a trailer. So about 14m overall. That's 46 feet!!

Think I will leave the boat towing to the Landy.

Our RV is 31' and we towed a trailer with a Nissan Micra on, combined length 45'? Maybe, rarely ever booked sites just took pot luck here and abroad.
The trailer sat by the side of the RV at the back with car in front if necessary on most pitches.
The couple I did try to book abroad were a waste of time, because when I arrived on site they had no idea how big I was, even though I had clearly told them by phone and email. Still got on though.:)

Motorway aires abroad are usually easy as they are designed in the main for lorries, people have been robbed on them but then people have been robbed in the UK. take sensible precautions and you should be ok. I chain both doors so they can't be opened easily using a cheap lock, which a good kick from me would break. My bedroom window because of its design is classed as an escape window.
Non motorway aires abroad will need more thought, on a few occasions I was able to park next to the grass verge and the trailer went on there with the car in the road.
