To date I have never used the grill & oven in my 2007 Hobby van (other than to check they both worked on handover). The oven seems pristine and seems to have had little if any use. I have stored pots and pans in it.
On my last outing the oven door flew open on my journey doubtless at a roundabout and the bagged pots and pans almost came out. On arrival I found that the female spring catch thingy that clasps the male post had come out. My attempts on site to reassemble were unsuccessful so I put gaffer tape on for the journey home and made another attempt a few days later at home but again without success. Access is very cramped to work on the affected area!
I am not sure that I need a new part but how on earth do I re-insert the female catch thingy back into the door? Someone must have had an identical problem?
Photos are attached. The oven door has three panes of glass. The inner pane is easily removable but the gaps between this inner double glazed panel and the outer pane is no more than 15 mm and try as a might I cannot get the catch in from behind nor can I insert it into the inner face frame. The third pane of glass appears mainly cosmetic and is curved to match the rest of the kitchen. That 3rd pane and frame is rivetted to the oven door frame rather than attached with bolts or screws so I am not in a hurry to drill those out and replace with self-tappers.
Logic dictates that the female catch should be a push fit from the inside into the oven door frame but I cannot get it to fit. I have applied pliers to the female catch to try and reshape it. That has not helped. Basically the catch is too long but it did fit before.
I believe the oven is a Smev though I cannot see a model number anywhere and the one manual I have missing is for the oven. The hob is a Smev (and the German handbook of course does not deal with ovens!). I can order a new catch from Smev if necessary but that will still give me the problem of fitting it!
What does the rubber tube do? Where does it go? I cannot see that anywhere on Smev exploded part diagrams. Plainly it was originally in one piece. I presume it goes on the side of the catch up against the outer side wall? Of course that bit of rubber tube might have been part of an earlier repair rather than an original fitting
I am wondering whether the irregular shape of the slot means that this problem has happened before and someone has enlarged the slot to refit the catch? That would explain the bare metal immediately around the frame at this point.
If someone cannot advise me of a knack to get the catch in - As I say basically it is too long - then plan B would be to drill and or file to enlarge the hole to make it fit and then use epoxy putty to secure the female catch. Does that sound like a sensible plan?
Thanks in advance for your replies! Oh and if somebody recognises the oven as a Smev and, even better can advise the model number, that in itself would be progress!!
