Prescriptions

This is an interesting thread. It would be nice to have good info on what countries you can take your prescription (or empty boxes) and buy medication.

Does anyone know about the island of Ireland?

I never knew that if you were away for more than 3 months tge GP, could remove you from his list. You could be on the phone trying to get an appointment for 3 months.

Ir is the prescription polict to prevent overstocked, or a revenue generation.?

I was prescribed a very low dose beta blocker by a cardiology consultant, tge surgery hsve orescr it, but refuse to put it on my repea prescription as they need to monitor it. When asked they suggested I need to phobexatc8 am to wait in a long queue to ask for a doctors appointment for him/ her to agree to add it to my regular prescription, one prescribed by a consultant. Sounds like a waste of time .

We are off for an 84 day trip and I asked the GP for 3 months supply of my tablets and eyedrops. I picked them up yesterday and received 84 days supply (3 months of 28 days). Thankfully that is just enough to see me through, although I will have to order before I am back to collect the day I return home. I had no problem with the GP who also wished me a good holiday.

We asked for more than one month a couple of years ago, Doc said he could only to 2 months at a time, now we have a drug stash-very handy!

As i said earlier it is obvious no 2 practises' follow the same guidlines.

We find it best to stock up on Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, and Antihistamines here in the UK before we go across the Channel, as they are cheap as chips from the likes of Superdrug, Poundstretcher, and Poundland, etc, compared to over there. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Not sure if it would work out for you but I checked with the Gibraltar health authority and they can dispense a UK GP prescription if someone could post the prescription over to you when you are due a repeat.
text below and note it needs signed in INK!

Good afternoon Mr Morlich,
Prescriptions for standard medications that are physically issued and signed in indelible ink by a GP registered in UK (GMC), either privately or under NHS, can be legally dispensed
from a local Gibraltar pharmacy, so long as other basic criteria are met.
It is important to note that the prescription would be considered ‘Private’, even if issued as an FP10 etc. ( NHS issued) and you would therefore have to bear the actual medication costs.
Hope this helps
Regards
Ezzard

Possibly an un answerable question but how about blood pressure tablets?
Wifeys been on them ( Amlodipine, Bisoprolol and Irbesartan) for years (can't possibly be due to marrying me  )and we always have the "we can only do a month " panic

At one point I was only getting 8 days worth of one of my drugs at a time. With a 10 day turn around it got fraught to say the least!!!! The brand I was taking has become unavailable, the generic contains gluten and the alternative gluten-free is only available in 0.5 mg. I take 12 mg a day so a lot of individual tablets. I can now get 300 tablets at a time and still have to have a blood test and then order the next supply when I collect the previous. Going away for more than a few days is going to be a nightmare even in the UK. The tablets are not available OTC anywhere as the blood test result is required. Luckily I have a machine to do my own blood tests now but not all places accept the result of the self test.

Husband managed to get his blood pressure medication in Spain, just take a copy of your prescription and the empty packaging if you can.

we had to stay an extra 2 weeks in Spain on a recent trip, changed flights etc then realised i didn't have enough medication to last until back in UK. I went to the Spanish pharmacy and i could buy metformin - a months supply for E2.50 and statins although they were E35 a box. I was only 3 short on the statins & the pharmacist said that wouldn't make too much difference to me if i went without for 3 days so I only bought the metformin. I did take my prescription with me but they didn't ask to see it.

Yes should be fine, I get Ramipril for blood pressure 👍

Some years ago when we first started going away for 3 months, I asked the Pharmacy if it was possible to have more meds. They said not without the GP authorisation. I phoned the GP who not only sent a script for the 3 months, she also sent across the standard repeat prescription, meaning I picked up 5 months' worth ! Having now done this a couple of times I have plenty of stock (all with very long BB dates) to ensure I will never run out.

Which is precisely why GPs were told not to do it - elderly folk died, when their kids went to clear their houses they found stockpiled prescription drugs in cupboards - because nobody told their GP they didn't bother to take/use whatever.

That's a major issue/problem, not only from the patient passing away with huge stocks of meds which cannot be used (eg re-prescribed or given to someone else), so they all go to waste. The other issue is when meds are changed or dosages of existing ones altered, as was the case of my Mum who had quite a stock of meds which were then halved, total waste of about 6 months' worth.

My doctor prescribes three months supply to save us money on prescription charges. I would just try and grovel round the doctor.

When we go away I just ask surgery for two prescriptions (GP know we are away regularly) To prevent the chemist wondering what is going on we use two chemists to full fill them . Never had a problem and always keep the prescriptions with us just in case some security/custom person asks why so much, been doing this for past 19 years and have only ever been asked once !!

We're on first name terms with our pharmacist - we've been going there for scrips as long as he's been head honcho at the pharmacy - in fact we were customers there before he bought it! They're so flippin busy I wouldn't expect him to particularly notice we'd had two scrips, but anyway he ain't the only pharmacist, he employs several others as well as the counter assistants.

Got a message from my cousin who lives in Spain, apparently the law may have changed re buying prescription meds over the counter, he suggested that the pharmacies face a hefty fine..
