I’m a newbie
Hi, as most of the people on here seem to be of a certain age, I can’t be the only one on regular medication, how do you manage on extended trips away. Thanks

The pharmacist phoned to check so I think it really is Dr prescription only.

I am in Scotland and just checked, the repeat ordering script only has my name, address and clinic number on it plus a tick list for ordering what I need. There are no Dr details - those are on the part that is handed to the pharmacist. The other option would be to photocopy the whole lot of course. Too late this time as i just handed the form to the pharmacist.

Yes it is. I have concerns about her sanity but it's not my problem. They have their Italian house up for sale (with the infamous Barry) and have had a few enquirers but no viewings. They need to sell before they can come back as they don't have enough money to buy a house in the UK or to rent - although they are really out of touch with rental prices and think they will get a nice house in a good area for around £200 pcm !!!!! I am keeping quiet about that as I don't want any more angst.

The Italian house had been up for sale for 3 years before they bought so I think they will need another mug person with rose-tinted glasses to make an offer - or someone who can make a real go of it. The property has a lot of potential for someone able to see what could be done and has the energy and enough capital to make it happen.

For a person / couple wanting a small market garden and holiday tourist business it would be fantastic. There is a huge garage ideal for commercial use (small agricultural machinery repairs or quadbike / motorbike repairs etc etc), the main house could be (and has been in the past) used as a B&B and a self catering apartment with completely separate owner accommodation and there is building plots with planning which I would have used to build log cabins or similar and done yoga / wellness retreats or painting schools (fantastic views) or craft holidays. The lists are endless! And no, I don't fancy buying her out!

Our biggest problem, like those on insulin, is that Rita's medi pens have to be stored at between 3 and 8 degrees, and although she has been lucky to secure a 3 x month supply so far, anything more cannot be purchased over the counter, although is available on the internet..................for an arm and a leg.
Before every issue, she needs a blood test, and whilst that is possible within the EU, the firm contracted by the NHS to supply the meds, no longer dispatches outside the UK. :(
She is not able to stock pile these meds, and so our EU travel duration is not expected to be much more than 12 x weeks. If the fridge on the MH ever fails, we will be bu@@ered and coming straight home. :(

Cheers,

Jock. :)

As I understand it you can use insulin unrefridgerated for 28 days if not allowed to go above 80 degrees I use A non insulin drug called liraglutide it also has to be used within 28 days unrefridgerated.
So what I do is take a three month supply with me then reorder when away my daughter then mails them to me and I use them straight away leaving my refridgerated ones until needed that way I can work up to 5 months away

@romany. Thanks, but Rita's medication isn't insulin, and has to be used within 14 x days of not being chilled. At up to £450 per medi pen, they are not something we are able replace, should we lose the ability to store them at chilled temperatures. :(

Regards,

Jock. :)

An interesting post this.

Where we live, they have introduced a system, where the Pharmacy will not now automatically re-order your prescriptions. They give me my prescription when I pick up what is needed, then three weeks later I can do one of two things.

1/ hand my prescription into the medical centre reception and pick up the medication after four working day's from the pharmacy:sick:
2/ go online using an app with security details, this puts me into my medication area where I can tick off what I need. I can also change address for the pharmacy if necessary, and pick up from the requested pharmacy after the four day's period(y)

I use the second one, I am just getting used to this as it is a recent idea. It may well sort out any issues you may have when you are away, gets rid of any three month ordering in advance etc:unsure:

I wonder how many of our MHF friends Medical centers are either trialing this, or are already doing this:)

Flook:coolest:

I do this but have to pick up at the GP reception then take to the pharmacy. Whoever picks up the prescription has to sign when they collect it :) It's a bit of a nuisance as then I have to take it to the pharmacy but it's better than having to go to the surgery to order the script and go back 4 working days later which used to be the case. My GP surgery is 8 miles away and the pharmacy 4 miles the other way.

I can also make appointments using the app or leave a message for the GP / nurse rather than make an appointment for relatively minor matters.

Yes, you can also put in a different pharmacy address for your medication to be sent to, so when your away for sometime, get the nearest pharmacy address, and make the change/s. However, there has to be a however or a but somewhere:ROFLMAO:, remember on your return home to make sure you change back to your local pharmacy, other wise oops:oops2: Doh:banghead:.

But all the people who are wanting the 3 month supplies are in other countries?

I'm sure that isn't correct.

First, you can get 3 months prescriptions for travel.

.... As for registering in another country when out of the country for 2 months... you can't just register at another surgery in a different country unless you become a resident. You then need to sign-up to the social security system of your host country. Your UK EHIC card becomes invalid. I believe that you then have to apply for (from memory) an S1 form.

Correct. The rules are [until Brexit. then ?] if you are in another EU country for 90+ days you are obliged to register as a resident. If you are in receipt of State Pension you apply for Form S1. If not, there are other hoops to jump thro'

This is completed in your 'new country' and returned to UK whereupon you are removed from UK NHS entitlement [but see note below] You are now entitled to register as a patient at a clinic appropriate for your location.

Registration as a resident principally revolves around showing you [individually - multiple by 2 for a couple etc etc] can support yourself without recourse to the 'new' country's welfare system. In Spain, it is reckoned that a State Pension is de facto sufficient. A ruling was passed by the EU that it was not reasonable and therefore not permitted to ask someone to show more income than a pensioner citizen of the country receives.

A ruling re the UK NHS "UK State Pensioners. UK state pensioners who have lived in the UK for ten continuous years at some point in the past are entitled to ‘treatment the need for which arises during a visit to the UK’ free of charge."

"UK state pensioners who live elsewhere in the EEA will now have the same rights to NHS care as people who live in England. This applies to all pensioners who receive a UK state retirement pension and registered for healthcare in Europe with an S1 form."

The Gov/NHS realised that as they pay for the treatment of pensioners via S1 in the expat country - that country submits the bill to UK for reimbursement - there was no reason to refuse treatment of the same person who happened now to be in UK. Very sensible.

It may well be a fatal casualty of Brexit. o_O

Absolutely Gus, and we normally have to see our GP, before 3 x months supply will be authorised.
At our surgery, whether submitting a prescription in person, or using the online facility (Patient Access), if you make a note that you are going on holiday, they will double up on your meds, but not triple up without seeing your GP.

Our young GP is all in favour of us heading to the sun over winter, and is happy to oblige with meds. It's the specialist meds which he isn't responsible for prescribing, which may/could present a problem.

Cheers,

Jock. :)
