Preparing for a Month in Spain with Dog

Raw dog food - whilst going through France there are a chain of pet shops called Médor et Compagnie, nearly all of their stores sell it. We've bought raw in Spain, but I forget where from. Search Google for pet shops & add BARF or raw, you'll find some scattered around. I tend to look at the shops pictures & look for freezers!

Only a small area affected in Spain - just go & enjoy!

We pet passported our working Lab whilst staying in Xavier - so he had a new 3 year Rabies jab from the vet there; as we were there for a month before we came back, it was over the 21 days so we were able to travel back on the passport. Whilst at the vets, we picked up some Bravecto - cheaper than it is in UK.
(The vet stated there are 17 different regulations regarding rabies jabs for dogs across Spain, so its no wonder its confusing for us)!

Yes indeed, buy local in big pharmacies.
I bought these 2 in France but used only the Seresto collar which is recommended and lasts for 7 - 8 months.

We have four cockers here and live in SWFr’
We have tried all treatments apart from the collars as the cockers we have are hunting daft and the collars just get pulled of , . We have found Advantix lasts about a week and with a
Previous reply you had , yes we have a lot of different tick strains . When you hit France go to a retail and gardening outlet called “gamm vert “ there are loads of these stores about!!

I will enclose a photo of what we use but to be honest I would go with the collar .
It’s called “VITAKRAFT”

If you get down to SW cherante on your trip through giz a shout ! (y)

I would look at getting and taking one of these..
They seem a bit hard to locate in Spain, it will allow you to connect a Spanish gas bottle onto your existing system.
A bit of back up in case you need more gas, plus it's a lot cheaper in Spain. (y)

One more big thank you for tips and encouragement

This might be interesting or a different option for some. Regarding sand flies/leishmaniasis, I have attached a PDF for the vaccination, but you need the dog to have blood tests first to insure its not already infected. Your dog needs to be over 6 months old and then have a booster every year. They thinks its 72% effective. Something to bear in mind the sand flie needs to be infected to pass on the disease plus there are hundreds of different species, so not all have or can pass on it.

We have returned now and Spain in April is our next trip, but France again in the future so will remember you if we get to Cherante.

We use Advantix every 28 days. However, in one wooded area near Seville we picked over a dozed ticks off the dog, some of which were already latched on. The treatment was in date, at about 23 days, but subsequent research revealed there are more than one species of tick and a couple of them need treatment every 21 days so that's how often we do it in the south of Spain. The leaflet which comes with Advantix does not mention this but we did find it on another document downloaded from their site although checking again they now say every two weeks for one type. Are they becoming resistant?

Give the collars a try if you want but check the dog very regularly whatever treatment you use.
Good advice thx

Could you tell me what vet you used in Xavier please

Lots of free aires both in France and Spain, use the apps Search 4 sites and park 4 night . Free drinking water, cheap gas at the pump , use lpg app , cheapest diesel I’ve seen 1.18 euros. We ( myself and my 2 hounds) have been in Europe since 20th September, not used a paid site . Once here try and obtain a EU pet passport as you will find this a lot cheaper than an AHC , most of all enjoy the ride!
I’ve got a Spanish rescue - Pepe - he came to us with an EU passport - but last year we went to France for 3 weeks and had to get a double AHC for him and his UK born brother .. why? Because UK vets are not allowed to update EU passports, so it was as much use as a chocolate fire guard to us. It’s a souvenir of his origin if nothing else mind you. It’s was only another £40 or so for the second dog so no great burden. At least the rabies jab will last a couple of trips. BTW we used Pitchup to book all our sites apart from the week in a Gite. Plenty of sites - France is fabulous for campervans … make sure you have a polarity tester and polarity reverse lead .. only a few quid and we did need them !!

Important point above. A UK vet cannot make any entry in a EU passport except worming if you're going for a short trip and don't have time to do it in the EU. All subsequent rabies jabs must be done by a EU vet.
Ours will be done early next year while in France although not actually due till spring 26.
Many previous threads on reverse polarity, most think it doesn't matter.

Wish I’d seen this before our current trip, although freezer would have been full of UK raw.
Didn’t find any raw in Spain or Portugal, but made do with tins (the horror) and frozen chicken wings. Were able to buy chicken feet and liver in Portugal (a market butcher) but never saw in Spain
