Portugal freecamping now illegal.

Ah but, you don't stay for six months in one place.

There is a certain odour in the place I photo'd, easily discerned if you just cycle through on the track.
I am sure i know the place in your pics. My wife and i walked through it , the other year and on turning a bend were confronted by a guy doing his business at the side of the track!!! and not a no 1 ,i might add. This kind of thing ruins it for us all.

Cheers Cris.

PS, if not where i am thinking ,it looks the same but the comment still applies.

Can you please point to where we can find information on 'authorised' places. We have the usual apps. (park4night, searchforsites, campercontact, campingcar-infos) but they do not always inform one whether the places are authorised.

We do not like campsites, so are happy with aires or any other authorised parking. It is a pity that the portgalresident.com did not refer to such information, but your help would be welcome.

Geoff
To be honest, Ive never seen an ‘authorised ‘ sign, apart from in some car parks where there are MH bays. For example, the one at Evora is a car park but part of it is for MH’s and they have waste facilities too, and it’s free👍
What they actually mean is an official aire or a campsite.
Simply put, if it has signage permitting it, you’re ok, if not, you risk being moved on and/or fined.
As JJ says, I suspect there are many places inland where you won’t get a problem, but then again, the law is the law and as it’s new and well publicised here I suspect it may be enforced. It definitely will be anywhere on the coast, as that’s where the main issues have been highlighted.
I know for a fact that where I live (Alvor) the GNR actively move MH’s off the land adjacent to where the aire used to be, now closed, as many of them have come to the campsite, which at €16 pn all inc isnt bad, and it’s not a regulated parking type of place.

It’s not that MH’s aren’t welcome in Portugal, it’s just that they want you to park where there are facilities, and maybe paid aire and site owners can earn a few quid to boot. Fair enough I reckon.

Actually comes into force today, not even yesterday
Jeeeeeez

If you read the post I was replying to you will see that it refers to "fines" BEFORE the latest "announcement"
and states...

But these have been known to run into double figures, and according to reports last May, could reach €2000.

I hope this clarifies my point better...

We will be OK JJ I'm sure we can hide out the way, 😉 €2000 is not double figures. 😁

😉 I've learnt a thing or two living in Spain, I think we have it covered. 🤔😁 Bob.

The suggestion that FLT's don't use campsites because they are mean with their money is not only offensive and wrong but also displays an arrogance worthy of Da*ly Mail readers...

JJ
Sounds like an FLT and a grundian reader. Do not let the orange ruin your pocket liner. :giggle: :gard:

Not all sites are like caravan club ones. We have stayed on excellent ones on occasion in France, out of season, bags of space and hardly another van in sight and certainly no tin pot dictators. Probably none in UK though as much more crowded.

My people tell me there are a few motorhomers enjoying the peace and quiet at Tomato Beach with the GNR driving by a couple of times a day checking all is well.

Saw a poor guy 2 years ago getting stuck there after a rain storm we had.the rescue truck pulled a big chunk of his bumper off trying to pull him out🥺.i felt really bad for him.it was a nice van.

It has long been illegal to overnight in many places in Portugal that do not have specific signage, the many Natural Parks for example.
Implementation of the rules has always been patchy to say the least.

Excuse the newbie question - what does FLT stand for - presumably something to do with "free camping"?
Fun loving travellers or Fur Lined Thong, take your pick.

We went to Sagres for a couple of hours in November. It looked like a gypsy camp!

I think you will find that if there are No signs indicating a Motorhome parking place for overnight, then you can assume that it’s Illegal, So it’s Aires or Camperstops only, seems fair enough, it’s been long overdue.

Does that mean that what was the official Aire at Alvor is now permanently closed.

I am (PAYING) at a motorhome park in Silves... it too looks like a Gypsy camp but with slightly less gold jewellery on the men... :whistle2:

Washing hanging out everywhere... rubbish bags outside on the ground, ladders and trailers scattered about.

I joined MHF because it was fun. It is now as bad as some of the facebook groups that are nothing but insult trading spaces. If you like campsites, fine, but don't act like a superior being. Don't try and label everyone else as low life.

Hi,please don't be offended, when FLT is brought up, I think we should take the posts a bit tongue in cheek
and I'm guilty of dishing out a bit of banter, sorry if this offends anyone but on the other hand I can take it too. (y)
