More than toes wet now!
We just got a ZTE MU5001 refurbished off eBay. You can get new off Amazon at twice the price as I don't think they have refurbished ones.
Alternatively you could think of refurbished Huawei models on Amazon but they are not as good as the ZTE.

If you just want occasional WiFi then you may be able to set your phone to be a hot-spot and access that from a tablet.

Otherwise I used a MiFi from Huawei for several years, it was very compact. For operation in remote areas a model you can plug external antenna into will generally perform better.

19 month year 18000 miles UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Italy. Campsites and off Grid.
In France, fed up of unusable free WiFi.

I have limited data for searching ATM

Recommendations please for portable (IE rechargeable) mifi boxes and antennas available from Amazon.
(MediaMarkt at a push)

Sims from Free or Reglo seem best bets.

What wrong with using the WiFi on your phone or hotspot to another device. We had 3 weeks all over France this month and were able to stream TV off our phone. No need for a mifi box.

Nothing at all, but if I want a mifi box, I'll have a mifi box! We each have 50Gb on our Spanish phone Sims, but we regularly use it all. And we're away for 6 months ...

Getting back up to speed (returning after 30yrs lapse)
If you just need something cheap & cheerful to get you connected, an older 4g+ mifi might do.

eg. https://amzn.eu/d/036CvPZj

We just spent 2 months in France/Belgium using the even older model (Huawei e5576-320) left permanently plugged in on USB, and streaming was possible pretty much everywhere (stuck above PVC door with 2 small velcro pads).

But my question is, why pay £180 for a ZTE MU5001 (ebay) when paying £22.99 for a 5g mifi from the same company appears to do the same job.
Please explain the advantages. ( I'm not what you could call "knowledgeable" about these things).

In relation to ourselves a discrete mifi unit when traveling works better for us. (y)

We've got 4 sims (minimal data) in 2 mobiles (one for each network to give maximum opportunity of signal) and 1 sim (fair usage limited - think 1Tb/month) in the mifi all for less than £20/month. Obviously, if a "foreign" sim was required when overseas that would be additional.

Different solutions for different needs.

We have dual SIM phones. A UK SIM to preserve the UK numbers we've had for 30+ years, and a Spanish SIM - because we live in Spain. The Spanish SIM has 50Gb useable anywhere in the EU. If I didnt need to keep these 2 numbers active I would take one out and replace it with a PAYG sim just for the data.
Having a mifi (I've used them before on boats) allows the use of an external aerial which from experience I know can turn 'no blobs' into a useable connection.

I wouldn’t mind a Nighthawk M2 but the price puts me off, even the M1 wouldn’t be too bad but seem to go for a lot.
That’s why I’m thinking of a ZTE MU5001.

We had a brief look at the M2 but, like yourself, the price was a real eeeeek!

Decided we could live with 2x2 MiMo and RJ45 port would probably never get used either so for nigh on a 1/3 of the price the MU5001 won out.(y)

This was at the bottom of the listing for the expensive item.
Suggest you compare the spec of this against the ZTE MU5001.

As an aside it's probably lower than the 2015 (first released) Huawei unit that I've superseded twice.
