Please be aware of how noisy your TV can be

Thats one way of getting a pitch....
How true. We were at a lakeside aire which had 3 places. We had one, a couple with a young family had another. A rather old van pulled into the middle space. A man emerged with a very noisy scooter and proceeded to ride round and round the three vans. He then went back into his van and put on loud thumping music incredibly loudly, all doors and windows open. The young family cracked first and drove away. Sad to say we followed. The man was left as lord of all he surveyed. I wonder how soon he turned off the music and stopped making a nuisance? He got three pitches!

I was not aware of this, until a neighbour (English) on a site in France got aggressive and came to my pitch shouting and threatening. I am often surprised by people who cannot distinguish between assertive and aggressive. All he had to do was ask, and since then I am always careful about music and the tv

I once asked, very nicely, very politely, for a caravaner to turn their music down. It was blaring out for the second day running and although we were four pitches away from them it was very intrusive. The woman turned the music down but then her husband bellowed at her to turn it back up. He then strode over to our pitch and very aggressively started telling us that we had no right to tell him what to do. My point is, asking nicely doesn't always go well.

This was a C&MC site and I had a quiet word with the warden. We didn't hear any more music.

Had a couple of work mates, separate problems with their neighbours regarding noise.

Hot summer nights and you put your windows on a peg lock left them open and trusted in your fly screens to keep roving blood suckers from disturbing your sleep.

First fella had neighbours that when they got "together" of a night time the lady in question was a "screamer" , not far behind was "hubby"

The second fella had neighbours that argued/rowed/fought generally at night after a few, no belay that, after many drinks, then got "together" with much loud swearing, calling each other names while mixing it all with noises of "passion"

They discussed their problem one day and both came up with , to me anyway, the ideal solution.. Both of them had a TEAC sound system

(don't ask me!!! I have one too, it is 30 years old and both SiL want the speakers!! Why? haven't a clue!!)

They recorded the carryings on and on a Sunday Morning, with ajacent windows open to the "participants" played their last night "antics" at full volume!

Both sets of neighbours sold up.

I love Spanish sites when every area seems to have a who's-got-the-loudest-speakers competition :D

I can hold my own in the speaker stakes, but you'll never beat the Spanish :D

That is so true. Last year we were on a Spanish site and a Spanish family arrived to set up. They drove a small white van but still managed to extract a sofa and a huge TV from its interior. Once they had the electrics going the TV went on at full volume. This was on a hot sunny afternoon, where everyone was sitting outside. This was just the beginning though! That evening the footie was on and they'd invited all their friends and family to watch with them.

Fortunately this was our last night on that site. The Spanish know how to camp, so we tend to do Spain when the Spanish aren't on holiday.

We both have a pair of in ear pod and Sennheiser HDR 175 bluetooth wireless headphones. Should we want to watch TV or listen to music when it is late, we can without having to close the windows or disturb our neighbours. Also great when we run the habitation A/C which normally means you have to increase the TV volume.

A few years ago in France, we parked up next to a van where the lady came out and immediately apologised for the noise from her air con and tv. With her was a great dane which I thought would mske more noise, but the dog, Phoebe, never barked or left Sue's side. RIP dippingatoe, the noise never bothered us and we had some silly times.

My heart sinks when we're in situ and someone arrives with a tv dish. We don't pitch next to them if we can help it and have left early or moved pitches before now. We stayed in a campsite in Albert on the way to Calais one night and suddenly there was a blast of Coronation Street from a massive amount of vans. It was hideous. Mind you, the worst time ever was someone in a very very large motorhome playing Phil Collins' Groovy Kind of Love on a loop throughout the night ! I can't even listen to it now 😂

I was guilty of having the tv too loud, because I'm a bit deaf. I solved the problem by buying a sound bar with bluetooth (Ebay £27) and put it on the table in front of me. Also means when the wife goes to bed before me i
don't get, turn it down a bit every few minutes ..lol

And caravaners leaving the heaters and loud TVs on in their awning as they go off to the pub etc. The last ones we saw didn't even have the excuse of needing it to keep a dog company...

As a new Motorhomer with a TV on board it's great to be aware of this before we get visits from the 'neighbours'!
Do folk have other advice on 'don't do; for newbies? Or should I try and start a new thread?
Thanks

Just be aware that the one thing we have in common on this forum is an interest in campervans and motorhomes. Beyond that, you'll find that, for example, people will complain if somewhere is too quiet, noisy, natural, regimented, hot, cold, frequented by French / German / Dutch / Spanish motorhomers, has too many children, yappy dogs or generators.... And how they don't understand how others could camp where they go or how they do it. Some will state that it is their right to do as they wish and their is nothing wrong with doing so when others are around while others will say live and let live..... You're unlikely to get a consensus on how to do or don't do.....

I am always aware of extraneous noise coming from our van, as we are quite big telly watchers..
When we first turn the telly on I usually take a mooch to make sure the sound is not intruding on others tranquillity

When we bought our Hymer as part of the media package it came with surround sound, just what you need in a van🙄 it took me a while it I did manage to disable it 🙂.

I think due to the age of some motorhomers quite a few have the volume turned up high, but fortunately most are tucked up in bed by 9 pm

Hi Nitram :giggle:

There's no 'one size fits all' advice that can be given, just be aware of your surroundings and others nearby and adjust your habits accordingly ... unless of course you're putting up an awning for the first time then other will love to be as near as possible to you to watch the entertainment! 😁

Was a couple of pitches away from a motorhome with an extremely loud tv a few weeks ago at Stroud Hill and they had it on all evening from about 7pm, sun was shining and not a drop of rain!

At CAMC Ferry Meadows last week a caravan over the road from us had a quest shelter with a huge tv in and had a movie night with the whole family. They watched transformers and we could hear it word for word until a fight scene started and my Mrs shouted turn your bloody tv down you selfish morons (or something like that) Again it was a very warm evening with no rain.

Wow. That’s going to be a long list with some on here 🙄🙄

My hearing was severely trashed about 30yrs ago due to a nasty virus. I now have wireless hearing aids (Phonak Marvel) that allow me to listen to TV in the van (and mob phone) at my own volume through a device, while my wife (excellent hearing) listens at her own volume through the normal speakers. Avtex tv's can be setup allowing that to happen... maybe other brands too! I would imagine that Bluetooth headphones would work the same for some people but unfortunately, they are not suitable for my hearing loss.

Easy to solve. Buy a hearing aid, if hard of hearing, or use bluetooth headphones or ear buds. However this does not solve the problem of noisy late night drinkers.

Weekend Party Special Starts 5pm Friday night and gets louder and louder and more join in and then the shouting at each other over the noise and the kids! It stops about 5pm Sunday! Yes we have stopped on those as well, now ask to be away from locals! ,

It's not just TVs and music. Picture this.
Hubby has quite a loud voiceand I'm forever telling him to shush.
Dog number 2 wears a harness which we call her 'bra'.
Hubby and both dogs inside. I am outside.
Pitched up on a very quiet campsite, nearest neighbour is a 70ish year old lady camping alone in her tent.

Great big booming voice from inside our van says "Come here my little Angel, let me take your bra off".

Lady opposite stopped in her tracks, eyes widened, her eyebrows almost met her hairline!!!

Brenda has profound hearing loss, but can't wear her hearing aids full time due to comfort. So on occassion our tv gets too loud till I intervene. This was worst when we first got the Rapido as the tv was broadcast throughout the van. When I disconnected the wire behind the tv, it was much better inside. However the speakers are at the back of the tv and right beside the fridge with it's huge open vents, so as loud outside as inside. A set of pc speakers solves this by making the sound directional from the front.

We have also had our share of inconsiderate campers over the years. One of the worst an elderly couple in a coachbuilt van that played classical music and radio at full volume day and night. I had a chat with the lady and she apologised that her husband was deaf and refused to wear hearing aids. We got 10 minutes respite till the husband turned the sound back up and there it stayed till nearly 2 am. You could clearly hear the noise in the next field when I took the dogs out for a walk to give my ears a break. Some people are just plain selfish and have no concept of other people

We had a Becker radio in our old van. Brilliant quality, but what we didn’t know was how loud it was through the front of the van.

We were quite new Funsters at Shell Island pitched next to Ambilkate. We got a knock on the door from Carol, who very politely pointed out that Bill and Kate didn’t want to make a fuss, but did we realise how loud our radio was from the front. We hadn't realised it, and it was loud, but since having it pointed out, we always turned off the cab speakers when pitched up in company.

That's all it took. A quiet polite word, followed by an apology and action.

We’ve been best mates ever since.

It must be a rainy Sunday with not much news for the ‘anti telly’ threads to start up again!

We would always chose to park next to a van that sported a red dragon and a six sided Quest - always lovely and quiet ....eh swanseajack13.

I have a massive noise intolerance and to me, a telly within earshot is a torture when I'm away in the van, also phone calls, radios, dogs, drones in particular, people who insist on giving everyone a running comentary on their every thought, especially when bollocking children. You name it, it gets on my nerves.
I can't help it, its almost like a panic attack sometimes, but the funny thing is, farm machinery, livestock, crows etc don't bother me at all? I think it's the inconsiderate nature of noise that screws me up, sad eh.

Many people don’t realize the sound that is played through front door speakers can be heard quite clearly outside the vehicle. I was once in a services and as I eat my sandwich heard Quite clearly one side of a hands free phone conversation between two people who were clearly married, but not to each other, better than the Archers an everyday story of country folk to accompany my lunchtime break.

I hate sliding doors in camper vans early in morning. Also yappy little dogs and radio, flipping, 4 blaring out from 6am!!
