Hi there

After spending the last year, pretty much recovering from horrendous water ingress and basically having to rebuild the back of our van, we are almost there! A few touch-ups and we are DONE! New floor, new ceiling, new walls, new seat coverings, new curtains and new lighting. I dread to think how much its all cost, but we are moving forward and really excited for a year of fantastic motorhoming ahead with our 4 children.

To finish off, we thought we would treat ourselves to upgrading the outside of our van from white to matt black. A bit of a risk as had no idea what it would look like, but we've had so many positive comments about it and I must admit, we think it looks about 10 years younger! I've attached a pic of the before (white) and after (black). I know some of you will say it may lose its value because its doesn't look anything like the original van, but we think its worth it!

And the cost was amazing - £1,100 for a 26ft van - including the roof! It lasts about 3 years and then you just need to get another coat which he said doesn't cost much at all. If you find you scratch it, you simply take it back and its only a really small amount to get it touched up.

So, for any of you looking for a bit of a change, highly recommend Plastidip. And when you are finished or you get fed up with it, you simply peel it off.

Remember to tell your insurance company though!

Faye

I certainly like the idea of a different colour (why wouldn't I? Ours it burgundy and grey) but I'm not a lover of mat finish. They look like the undercoat waiting for the finish but if the OP likes, then brilliant.

It looks better than the original, but as an owner of an almost black van I can advise you it will get hot in the sun, If I was you I would have left the roof white.
How chip and mark resistant is it?
Some silver satin details would look good.

It reminded me in Spain recently driving a white hire car. We were parked up in the mid day sun I had my arm out of the window with my hand on the roof. The roof felt like an ice tray. I doubt you will be able to touch the roof with a darker color. The van looks very nice, well done..(y)

Why not add some "Marmite" logos?

It's that sort of van.

Thumbs up from me

love the look, but also concerned about excess heat in the summer.

Dont forget to inform DVLA of change of colour also.

Must admit not my cup of tea but each to their own, personally a good white respray would look a lot nicer.

I remember your earlier posts about your damp problems. Glad you've got it ready for the road. Hope you make lots of happy memories in it. :D

I understand the reasoning for saying hot in the sun.....so why are Burkha's predominantly black and not white ?

Black is better at radiating heat, so as long as they park the motorhome in the shade, it will be cooler than a white one :)

If you only use your unit in the UK, even in the Summer, you can absorb as much of the Sun as you can and it wont make much difference inside, in fact, you will stay as warm as a Summer's Day would be abroad and save on your heating fuel costs.

I was unsure what this was, so looked it up.................

Actually, apart from the heat problem I think it looks fine, in a different sort of way.

I like the stealth look and I'm sure would look even better with a few decals or other detailing.
I don't think you'll have a problem with heat in the sunshine as most of the heating effect is by radiation through the windows and can be sorted with a sliver cover / reflectors

Definitely going to stand out on a Club Site, it looks much better, cost much less than I thought it would.(y)

Hi there Faye , so good to hear from you again , has it really been a year .

I'm so pleased you got the van sorted , now you can start to make the thing earn it's keep eh .

I quite like the new colour , but for me personally i would add some gold tram line's , or even an old custom van trick , pinstriping , just to break the black up . Year's ago there was a tv show called treasure hunt , that used two jetranger helicopter's . The main bird had a standard factory paint scheme . Multi yellow and brown strip's , over a conventional white base , however not often seen , there was a second camera and communication's ship , which sported a completely custom paint job , gloss black with gold tram line's . For some reason the gold set off the black , , should show you what i mean . i will admit i'm not sure what the effect with matt black will be though .

Looks great, but puzzled by the many references to something called summer and heat... xx

How dare u do something different ,the warders on the campsites won't like it ! I think it's great,if it wasn't for resale problems I would do mine green.

Sleek, black, understated, chic, different. Agree, 10 years younger..... for me, that adds resale value.
Ours is white, showing its years, getting a bit matt...... and pretty much the same as the other 250,000 MHs travelling daily on the road.
When we see you, I'll honk! Bon voyage and can't wait to hear what fellow travellers think.

You certainly won't have trouble finding it at a show, certainly different. Enjoy it after all your work(y)

If it's ...in effect.. a wrap.. then there's no need to inform DVLA of a non permenant colour change.
