I know it’s reckoned to be hard to get a dog passport in France, so I thought I’d post a recommendation. I took my dog to this lady, in Borges, for the return-to-UK worm tablet, and she was very happy to issue a lifetime passport for €17. I’m aware of the need to get rabies boosters in the EU, but nevertheless I’m delighted to hopefully be free of AHCs!

Any chance you could put the details on this thread 👍

Done. (Tried to find it before, but failed.)

Well done. Have added her to my list of French vets. (y)

Some vets will issue them to UK residents, some won't. According to what I've heard, you just need to keep trying until you find one that will. You just need to give them a French address. I personally know someone who got one by using a camp site address.

Morning Dave, just to note the following. We've just returned from 2 months overseas and have a French PP with appropriate worming completed in Croatia (€43). However for the first time since its issue in mid 2021 (and used multiple times) we had a awkward confrontation with DFDS lady at the gate at Dunkirk. She insisted that we show the previous UK PP. Her objections/query being that although the French vet had copied over the Rabies injection from early 2021 and signed/dated and stamped the entry (and we'd used it multiple times since, with DFDS and P&O), she refused to accept its validity. Luckily we do carry the UK version and was able to comply with her request (valid or not). Whatever the merits of her request and on what advice she has been given it still makes life more stressful than it needs to be (and of course, if we hadn't complied, it would have been a missed ferry, a trip to a local vet, a new vaccination and another ferry cost).
NB we chose not to get a new Rabies at the original French issue as it had only been 3 months since the UK injection. However we will get one done when we travel back in September.

I've been told that if an English vet makes an entry into an EU passport then it becomes void and you wouldn't be able to use it again. If that is true, and i've been told it by a few sources, then you should get the rabies jab in Europe.
All correct (y)
Add to that you don’t need a French address to get the passport.
2 years using ours no problem

We did have a new rabies jab so would not have had the above issue. Although we do carry all paperwork we have had since having Ruby 12 years ago just in case

Thanks for this heads-up. Yes, the vet yesterday copied all the rabies details across from the previous records (not a PP, but the vets’ vax certificate), but nevertheless I’ll keep that document until we get a new rabies jab (in France, next year). It’s all such a pain, isn’t it?!

So I figured out a bit of a Heath Robinson way to sort out pet passports for our two! As our pup was only eleven weeks old (12weeks for rabies jab) And we had an opportunity to visit my sister in Eire in May we drove from South Wales to Scotland, sailed to Belfast ,drove antI clockwise along the WAW ,first vet we came across in Eire (on pups twelve week birthday) two pet passports, two rabies jabs ,£160 ,completed WAW visited sister ,back up to Belfast ,over to Scotland, home!
Savings made I think will have paid for the fuel used and no need for AH Certificate when we go to France in September for the rugby World Cup 👍

We have been travelling Europe for 10 weeks and return tomorrow. We obtained a pp from a vet in Belgium following a thread on MF. Although our dog had two years left on his rabies jab she advised getting it done again due to a history of pp's being refused if the pp doesn't show the rabies jab. It cost os 150 euros for the pp and rabies jab.

Wow that’s gone up in price. €57 in Rochefort for the lot.
Ruby has a year left on the 3 year jab but will ask to have it done this year on return at 2 years to give us more flexibility next year.
She is 13/14 now so getting on a bit now.

It really shouldn't be an issue. If the French vet transferred over the rabies vaccination properly (which he/she obviously did as you have used the PP before), then that is good enough. However, it is a good idea for those with transferred information to carry the original document as well - for just this kind of eventuality. Although it shouldn't be needed, it's a lot easier than arguing the toss.

That seems to be about double her usual rate. Wonder if she made a mistake in the bill? Or did you do something to offend her?!

Good luck and I hope that works for you but the only safe way was to have got a new rabies jab done by the EU vet at the same time you got the PP issued. Copying across the details is risky as it means the vaccine was given by a UK vet which is not allowed - as Eloceo discovered. I would suggest you get the dog vaccinated on your next trip. It should be safe on the way out as UK port folk may not be familiar with the rules but EU staff will be.

It does the dog no harm to be vaccinated early.

That is not correct, John. EU Pet Passports can be issued on the basis of an Animal Health Certificate from any third country. However, once you have an EU Pet Passport, only an EU vet can update rabies vaccinations in it. Eloceo just happened to meet an official who got it wrong.

Best thing ever no more big vet bills

If Dr Jaucot, then she charged us 120 euros last October. She does seem to make it up as she goes along aided by only taking cash. We had agreed 50 for PP but then needed the rabies and that involved a health check.

Ah, I was thinking it was Lieve - the vet in Bruges. There is a separate thread about her. If it was Dr Jaucot in Mons, then her prices have been steadily inflating for some time.

I stopped going there as she was getting more expensive, been to the vet in Bruges the last 3 times but have found this one to try when we are away again in September.
5 minutes walk from the aire and 10 to the beach.

Not too bad a price paid around €78 for the 2 Jacks last week in Bruges.

Hi,

We can administer the deworming and fill in the papers. For two dogs up to 25 kg it will cost around 56 euros.
Do you want an appointment in Nieuwpoort, Westende or Koksijde?

Lieve has quoted 147 euros for 2 PP's, 3 rabies boosters and 3 worming (1 of our 3 has a PP with expired rabies, so only 2 PP's required). Seems reasonable. £370 for AHC for the 3 + £73 for rabies from our local vet - I know I could get it cheaper at Abbeywell.

Did you get an AHC for the crossing to Belfast? I think in theory they aren't required but am not sure I would risk it .

It was Dr Jaucot in Mons. She requested the payment in cash but my partner has now informed me it was 140 Euros not 150.
It actually ended up costing us 340 Euros because our poor little dog became ill following the jab and his side swelled up. He woke up one morning in Switzerland with a hole in his side and we took him to a Swiss vet. We stayed in Switzerland for 5 days while he recovered and the two vet visits cost 200 Euros.

Poor little chap! Do you think it was related to the rabies jab, which usually seems to be given in the scruff of the neck? Although I remember reading that sometimes the jab is given in a rear leg (probably American method). A hole in his side sounds like a burst abscess - horrible!

Yes I think it was a burst abscess , the Swiss vet thought it was a snake bite. We don't think it was a snake bite as he was ill the day after the jab ( in the top of his rear leg), he didn't want to walk anywhere after that.

Awww - hope he is now fully recovered. Which rabies vaccine did he receive, and had he had the same one before?

No requirement what so ever, travelling internally in the UK then no active border between UK and Eire so no AHC required 👍both our dogs now have an Irish passport and rabies vaccination for less than the cost of the AHC which was the reason I chose to do the grand round trip 🙂
ps they have opened a pet lounge on the ferry now but ours were fine in the van for the two hour crossing ,we spoke to someone who had used the lounge and she said it was a waste of money and wouldn’t use it again.

Hi BikerJon Can you please tell me where you got the blanket from in the photo? I have a small piece exactly the same and I'd love a full blanket....but I've no idea where it came from. The piece I have came with one of the emergency rescue dogs we took in, so I've no way of tracing it. Thank you so much :)
