Pesky squirrel...

Bring back the old bounty for grey squirrel tales ( used to be 6 old pence I believe) .They are imported vermin which serve no purpose in our "natural" world. 2 year's ago. a pesky critter chewed through my front brake hose during the winter lay over-not immediately visible until you started up and found " no brakes"
Remember this as a kid, shooting tree rats and getting the bounty. We had a chance of saving the reds back then, sadly those days are long since past. It’s all a bit like our native crayfish being decimated by the signal crays...

It shouldn't be necessary to do anything, it hasn't been living there just using as a convenient place to have a snack over the winter - presumably because you haven't been driving it.
Exactly, it's been snacking on my wiring and soundproofing even though I go into it almost every day

It's a "touchstone " subject with many people. I'm firmly in the "their vermin camp ", having had one particularly destructive varmit chew all the lead flashing to my windows, and garage valley roof . Catching them is simple as described by others. I would say put the trap up off the ground so as not to end up with birds in the trap. I baited it with loose peanuts placed in a tennis ball cut in half and zip tied to lever but without setting the trap door initially, they soon got used to the freebie hand outs. The only down side is, when one is removed from an area, that space gets quickly filled by another male youngster waiting in the area for a territory of it's own, but that one might not fancy a diet of Motorhomes. I found this out after removing 50, [ yes 50!!] of the pesky little blighters. So unless the entire neighbourhood decides on the same policy, you won't win, and they have all day to sit around and have sex to increase their numbers, the squirrels that is , not the neighbours, well I assume not.

I can beat you on that count, 63 so far. That’s since the beginning of last year, plenty more before then but didn’t count them then.

You will probably find the police are a little too busy to prosecute someone ie me for not killing a squirrel. If they have got time come and get me. Im still not killing one just sending it on elsewhere.

For someone else to suffer 🤷‍♂️

Unless it’s one of those homing squirrels, then it’s on its way back 😂

Yep i think they are vermin to just couldn’t kill it thats just me. Could kill a rat though dont lnow what the difference is.

Anyone who's had to rewire their house because of grey squirrels in the attic should have no qualms about dispatching them, I certainly didn't. My method was to use a no 4 fenn trap inside a proper mesh tunnel in the attic, over the space of 20 years I had about 6 or 7. As well as the rewiring, every time one chews his way in you have to repair wherever they chewed through to get in. As has been mentioned moving them somewhere else is illegal as is dispatching them (once caught in a humane trap) in a cruel manner (ie drowning, a common method in the past).
Probably the cleanest method is the A18 trap which uses a Co2 cartridge to fire a pin that kills them outright but they are expensive. By humane, they mean a humane death not a no kill trap.

As Ned Flanders might say,Hello neighbouroony, yes where you live is an island surrounded by woods, perfect for the little varmits.

What you did is illegal, they are an alien species and have to be put down. You only release them if they are reds.
Yes. This is important to emphasise. If it is a red squirrel it is indigenous and so not vermin. Just saying this because the vast majority of squirrels round us are reds.

It's a similar problem in New Zealand, but the introduced pest there is Possums. They prey on a lot of the native bird species there, and the only real cull of them is by vehicles. You can barely drive a mile without seeing one ironed out on the highway. Timber electricity post have to have a collar installed on them to stop the things chewing the cables and tripping out the mains supply. Specimen trees also have to have the same collars fitted.
The complete irony of it is, it took decades and many attempts to get them to stabilise breeding colonies of things for the fur trade, now they spend millions of $NZ trying to eradicate them, unsuccessfully.

Actually I was living next to Heathrow at the time, so very few trees around, which was probably why they chose to live in houses, they did loads of damage to the next door neighbours as well and a few others in the street.

Solely grey where I live.

Ate the petrol in filler cap bit, £250 lighter! Brand new car!

These work well as they’re off the ground and don’t therefore trap things like hedgehogs. They also feed the birds which is great, and the birds feeding helps to attract the squirrels.
You just need a couple of cage combs to contain the squirrel and then it doesn’t matter whether you use a .22 or .177 pellet ......from two inches both are very humane 👍

Never had them near the Moho fortunately but when they invaded our loft years ago I tried every humane way on earth to get rid but in the end had to resort to industrial scale poison. After a few weeks the scurrying in the loft stopped and when the smell got unbearable I recovered 10+ bodies buried in the loft insulation. Had all the soffits and chewed wiring/pipes replaced at considerable inconvenience and expense and never had them back, but I do not view them in the same light as I used to - Cute they are NOT!

Two inches, way too close, may get splatter back which plays havoc with ones blueing... 🤣

Going on what I've read today regarding deterring it, I've put a bright PIR lamp on the inner wing where it seemed to be doing the damage.
It might get the message if it's even still around, and depending on the weather I will try and leave the bonnet up (in back garden so no problem) for a couple of days.
I guess I'm very lucky so far that the damage is not worse so I need to be pro-active in a passive sort of way as I haven't got all day to sit and watch with an air rifle.

When you get back to check it, you'll probably find him wearing sun glasses and sitting on a deck chair trying to get a tan. :giggle:

What's the difference between red and grey squirrels?......apart from colour....

......................GREY LIVES MATTER !!
