Maybe left this a bit late, but has anyone ever paid for a new motorhome (£50,000) with a debit card? Hayes say this is ok, but our bank weren't sure. We are going in to the bank tomorrow to get a Bankers' Draft, but I have just read on one of the Facebook motorhome pages that these still need time to clear your account. HELP!!!!

I paid for mine on my Tesco debit card and got my Tesco points ......

Times that by 3 x face value thats a lot of Euro Tunnel crossing. ...

how long ago was that?, just checked their website, doesnt add up?

Just phoned Hayes again and they assure me that a debit card payment will be fine. I'm such a worrier

Paid £16,000 for ours 10 yrs back on a nationwide debit card
Without a phone call or hic up
Transferred money to that card from an isa day before (internet)

Paid deposit of £2k by credit card and then five bank transfers over five days and the remaining £3k by credit card on the day. I thought we were getting some sort of extra protection by partial payment by credit card but at least I got the points.

If Hayes say it won't be a problem then it won't be one (providing of course there's enough £££ sitting in the account)

And for everyone else's benefit - there will not be a problem with the van itself. They are having it from Hayes!

(we did have a problem with the cooker malfunctioning and also the fridge - both sorted easily under warranty and certainly not anything to do with Hayes themselves)

Switched the lot less a 1k deposit for our new Rapido. The machine did say to contact bank which they did and after answering a couple of security questions the dealer got the authorization code for the payment so the answer to your question is yes.

We paid for our at Lowdhams no problem on a debit card and I'm sure there was no charge it would be different on a cc as they pay a percentage to the card company probably only 1% but a fair bit on a motorhome the debit card is a flat 25p or so

Yes, called my bank, told them what I wanted to do and when I would do it. They authorized the payment so it wasn't an issue. Good luck (y)

When we bought our Auto Sleeper in 2014 we part exchanged our old van which left us owing just under £29,000, we took this in cash to the dealer and he nearly had a heart attack.
He refused point blank to take all the cash and said the most cash they could accept would be £9,000 the rest by card.

John.

Money laundering, huh? ;)

Cash is now seen as the currency of criminals.

I'm hoping my dealer will accept sexual favours when we pick our new van up ;) as payment

I ring the bank a couple of days prior and give approx time and amount. Have paid over £50k several times without the phone ringing. Gives me a dry mouth each time!

When I bought private, I arranged for the seller to accompany me to nearest branch of my bank. Got them to do a transfer to the seller. There was no problem for the £22,000 leaving my account, it was a hold up transferring to them even though it was their branch! The search was done by HO on the recipient. This way, I got keys, she got money no fear of problems.
Bought next MH from a dealer, popped in card and £24,000 went straight out. I guess dealers have upper limit compared to a small garage so don't get questioned as large transactions are normal.

just paid for ours on debit card, just called the bank the day before to advise that a lump sum would be leaving our account, no issues.

I paid for my Carthago Malibu by debit card. First time it was put through it got rejected, and the dealer said "here is a phone, you will be on it for quite a while". He then went to make a coffee, and as he walked out the door, I received a text from the bank asking if it was me paying. I responded 'yes' and had a reply to try again in a couple of mins. When the dealer came back with the coffee, I said it was ready to re-try, and the card payment went through ok

Cheers

Trevor

I've always paid by debit card. I also always tell the bank a couple of days before giving them the name of the payee. Never had a problem ( once the sum was over £50,000).

I know of a dealer who will make a charge of 1% on a debit card payment, they say that because of recent changes the Debit Card providers charge them on a percentage basis. I have paid £24000 on a previous van from a different dealer two years ago.

I rang the bank today and told them the amount I would be paying, who to and the approximate time. She said they would make a note of it in our account.

I purchased a new Car on the 1st and telephone banking was limited to 10k per day and my online banking was limited to £20k per day.

The mistake I made was leaving it until just three days to go and then set up the Dealership as a new payee. Fraud and security got in touch and authorised the 1st £20K and told me that my next two payments would be fine now that the Payee was already authorised. Sure enough the next £20k went through fine and I just paid a small balance on the day.

So my tip to you if you want to do on-line banking is pay the dealership £1 a week earlier and then there will be no hiccups.

When we bought our first, new, motorhome we paid part by debit card (most) having pre arranged amount and payee with the bank, rest by CC for added security. Bank gave me a number to call if there was a problem with amount going through, there wasnt

I've heard of a charge going on to credit cards, but understood that debit cards were to be treat the same as cash and that dealers couldn't make extra charges on them ?
