P&O Pet Lounge

Only took a dog on a boat once. Hired narrow boat on the fens. German Shepherd (Zac). He loved it. Generally laying on the engine hatch, I think he liked the warmth, being generally wet due to rain or swimming.

I have just returned from my holiday and used the new Pet Lounge on P&O Dover to Calais route. It worked out £120 cheaper return than Eurotunnel.
The pet lounge facility was great, we were parked up next to the lift that took us up to within a few metres of the lounge.
For the humans, at the moment there are complementary hot drinks, water and cans of Pepsi. There are also plug and USB sockets in each area. Dogs have access to water bowls and an outside exercise area.
On the way out there were 3 other dogs and on the way back we had the lounge to ourselves.

Thanks.

I thought my dog was going to love it too. I had visions of us sunbathing together on deck, but NO!!!

To be honest, leaving the dog/dogs in the van for a 2 hour crossing is not different from walking into a city without them.
They will go to sleep and greet you just the same as if 15 minutes or 2 hours.
Its us that put our emotions onto the dog not the other way around.
You haven't got a clue what it's like to have a terrified dog if that's your true opinion. I knew my dog and we didn't cause her stress from OUR emotions as we were very careful not to do that (we've had dogs for over 41 years). You try returning to an absolutely petrified dog, panting with her eyes popping out! She never ever got over it and it became a challenge even to get her to travel as she associated the Armco barriers on the sides or the road as a sign that she was going on a ferry, never mind going over the Humber Bridge when she 'ducked' as we went under the bridge supports! We had to sell our static caravan as she was terrified of the place having been scared by the noise of bird scarers.

Have you heard the noise on a car deck? Car alarms, noisy vibrating ship engines etc. Each to there own I guess.
Exactly, in our Lily's case she was on the front of the deck in an area open to the outside so not only did she get the interior noises but also those from the outside too ... poor little thing was besides herself.

Still your own emotional response to what you have not experienced.
I'd stop if I were you as you are digging a really big hole for yourself based on not appearing to have any 'real' experience of what it's like to have a petrified dog.

Never experienced a car alarm on my way back.
Good for you ... try staying in the car deck.

As for vibration, it passes throughout the ship.
It's not the vibration its all the noise, clattering etc that happens.

The most disturbing aspect of a dog on it own is passing people, and its assumed role in pack leader/ guard.
Really? Well blow me down ... I never knew that ... yes I'm being sarcastic!

I would hope on a car deck passing people would be very limited.
Yup but that's NOT the problem.

As you can probably tell from my responses I am not happy to be 'lectured' on why my poor dog was petrified by someone who never met her or knew what the issues were with her ... it's one thing to say what your view is but to 'talk' to us as if we are idiots is a bit much.

I'm tired so I'm off to bed before I say any more!

It must be very hard to deal with a dog who has that condition. Hats off to you all who have to do if.

We will not leave our dog on the car deck or in a cage in the pet area so have always used the shuttle.

but seeing the photos above made me do a comparison P&O v Tunnel and P&O was only a saving of £19 on like for like dates for spring next year. so not an incentive for me.
Yes. The pet lounge was excellent, it was also so much easier to check the dogs in (they just handed me the microchip reader from the checking in booth), but it would need to be cheaper than ET by a good amount. It’s good to have alternatives and I’m hoping it gives ET some incentive to offer pet deals to retain their customers.

Thanks for posting, I saw the pet lounge provision and said that after us all vowing not to use them P&O had come up with something you can't turn down.
I will definitely look at it for next year and I love the fact your dog is on the sofa, mine always sits with us and it makes them feel settled. It's a dog lounge I don't know what the negative commenters are on😂.

We used the pet lounge for the first time when we traveled to France. It was a good experience, we were parked just by the lift to access it, as we got out of the lift a steward met us and walked us through to the lounge. Best of all it was way cheaper than the tunnel, even better P and O take Tesco vouchers, Happy dayz.

😂 that’s us sitting next to you

Hi all. We don take pets with us anymore, they have grown up and go on holiday on their own (Kids).
but we do check prices when crossing the channel. We won’t use P&O but found Irish Ferries really competitive and very good. Definitely worth a look.

Yes, it's the total cost that matters. We used ET for similar reasons as you as one of our dogs was terrified of ferries, unfortunately she passed away in June so we now have a choice of ferry or ET. When we had FT tickets it was a no-brainer to use ET but now we haven't we're looking at all options ... I supposed I could do what I did on our recent Ireland trip and stow away with the dogs in the MH - before anyone starts going on about this, save your 'fingers', it's my choice and I did what was best for my doggies, if anything happened whilst on the ferry I'd want to be with them anyway.
Don't need to stowaway with dogs. Ours just crashes out and sleeps the whole time. How do we know. As soon as we unlock the door we are greeted by a yawning, stretching dog emerging from the duvets who has obviously been asleep the entire time.

You may be right about Irish Ferries but a protest 17 years late will do little to impact share holder’s views.

After what happened with Lily no way am I ever risking anything upsetting my dogs so I'll just have to put up with slobbing out on the bed with them and doing my puzzle book! :giggle:

My well trained dog has NEVER been upstairs in the house and has NEVER been allowed on any furniture…

Oh …. until 5 am when we arent looking…

Doesn't matter how long ago. They sacked good British and Irish seafarers as P&O have done... Or does time really heal?

I think you are right. Is there a solution? If we look at any industry or company we can find fault.
I guess we must do our best to treat everyone with respect.

I guess it's what you want out of keeping a dog. We like nothing better than cuddling ours but then again he is only small.
Each to their own I guess. Personally I love it when I wake up in the night and there’s my little cockerpoo stretched out between us with her head draped over my leg …. Bleary eyed morning snuggles when she hears us first talking and stumbles up the bed half awake to lick our faces and greet another day all together
Probably some of you will have vomited by now reading that lol
But I love it 😃

I assume people know that you pay at least £12 for this facility, with a single dog it's not bad but if you have several it's not cheap.
I enquired about an upgrade from kennel to dog friendly room on Hull - Rotterdam route,
That would be an extra £80 on top of the £40 kennel return fee, I can't see how they can justify so much extra for having a dog with you in a cabin
