👋 Hi Guys - will rarely visit campsites and wondering about how to fill water tank - have a some ideas but don’t know how practical they are in real life.

Q1: Is the Rheinland water filler cap as useful as it looks to be?
Is the Hozelock type connector universal throughout Europe?
(I’m thinking friendly householders would let me use their garden hose more happily if I didn’t have to take their Hozelock end off - and old Hozelocks often disintegrate when messed with)

Q2: Submersible water pumps - Whale vs Reich
Reading threads on the Whale pump, it seems to have a special plug that needs a special and expensive socket - can the plug simply be replaced with a standard 12v socket-friendly plug?

Has anybody used the simple - and cheap - Reich pump? (Or one of the similar submersibles)
Looks like it’s comes with wires and no plug, so you can put what you like on.

PS: is a collapsible water carrier a viable emergency option to hose connector caps and submersible water pumps?

I use one of those scrunchy type of hosepipe with a female push on adapter on one end and a 3/4 screw adapters on the other, this covers me for 99% of times for the rest I have numerous other connectors that I’ve picked up over the years. Not failed yet🤞

I would add a 1" tap adaptor to your bag of bits. You don't often need one but when you do - you will thank me! :) We came across several taps on our recent trip to Spain which needed a 1" adaptor.

The blue water connection you've shown was a very tight fit into my filling aperture which would prevent overflow when full. So I have drilled out 3 holes in the blue cap so when tank full it doesn't get pressurised

Carry as many connectors and adapters as you can possibly assemble - they only cost a few quid at most - you’ll never know what potable water source will be available, so grab it when you can!

Today at Ano Meros Village, Amári Valley, Crete.

Whale AquaSmart socket fitted to van wall near tank, plumbed into tank. External pump switch with light. 10litre plastic jerry can. Aquasmart hose and pump. System works well, tidy, clean with no leaks. It is what caravaners have done for years, after all your van is just a MotorCaravan according to the DVLA. We use a plastic jerry can as no space to store an AquaRoll and 10litre is not too heavy to carry a distance.

Regarding the push-and-hold down taps, we learnt years ago that the loop handles on the 5L containers of water they sell in supermarkets can be re purposed to hold down those taps . ( The containers have the loopy handles, not the supermarkets!)
For water filling I use a lightweight plastic funnel with a sucker tyrapped to it to stick it to the wall above the external filler which I refill using a 5ltr container which we normally reserve for drinking water.
Regarding stream water I was always taught to only drink from a stream thats running faster than you can- but still check for dead sheep just upstream!.

I have one of these filler caps, particualy useful if your pump doesn't prime very well after system is drained, it allows you to build up a little pressure in the system.
