Number plates - New Regs.

I'd have thought it fairly easy to filter out offending plates:
If APNR cannot detect a readable plate, flag the photo for human attention.

I think there are a lot with reflective letters films on top to make photos less clear etc. An easy solution would be to require a standard plate design and make it a fine of say£200 for having a plate that doesn't comply on any age of vehicle. I can only think of one reason for having a hard to photograph no plate.
Both of the above are already dealt with by human intervention if the ANPR cannot read it. In the case of reflective film apparently the digital image can expose the correct numbers/letters under certain UV or IR light

I think I read somewhere that they can ‘negative’ any image that is unclear and it shows up better. Why don’t people just obey the law? Beats me.

Yes but German plates are nothing to do with the car. They are allocated to the owner. You have to collect them yourself & show your ID card. You also have nothing to do with the manfacture of the plates.

stick on small black letters same as I use on van sides for tare & mgw.

Not quite sure why you say they are not related to the vehicle, the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil is the German equivalent of the UK V5C and registers the assigned number plate to a specific vehicle. Once allocated to a vehicle the plates are present when the vehicle is MOT'd and gets its new MOT (TUV) disc attached with the next 2 year date cut into it. Registration is district specific but relates to the owner's address rather than the place of first registration as in the UK. I agree you can choose, within limitations, what your number could be with the exception of the area identifier. As an example my Cologne registered Toyota has 'K' at the front whether I liked it or not.
You can specify and order plates online and once delivered there is only a few weeks 'window' to register them otherwise they go back in the pool of available registrations. I do not recall seeing any dodgy German plates so it appears to be reasonably successful.

If you wish you can run without number plates.
Hi.
Oh gus. " Skinny head ". got stopped for " No number plate " he said it must have dropped off..... Nice police officer said " We can stand here and discuss this, lets start with " Did you forget to put it on or, yes it was on it must have fallen off ? ... Insecure load ?..Get the bugger put on and clear off while i am in a good mood " They don't make police officers like they used to.......
Tea Bag.
PS. On the A1 many years ago traffic officer Burton 70's..( Bloody great triumph mo-bike.).south bound near the first Peterborough turn off on the OLD A1.. Saw him in the mirror, braked, now doing 45 mph,he rode behind for about a mile then pulled me in,saying i had been speeding . Me. " When i saw you,i was only doing 45 Mph " Him..... " But when you DIDN'T see me you were doing 50 mph.......... " We had a good natured chat,he told me he had to report me,but it was down to his top man. Got a letter a couple of weeks later, the speeding was put on hold, but if i did anything else on their patch,it would be brought back for after 6 months ? later.
He used to sit in a part of the old road where they sold spuds,we waved to each other when passing after that.....Proper Bobby. Constable Burton.....A1 Peterborough patch. Never forget his name

If you wish you can run without number plates. It is a non-endorsable offence with a £60 penalty & 7 days with which to rectify& correctly fit plates. They'll tell you you don't have that time but you do. They can't seize the vehicle without making up some other offence so it is always best to record any conversation with them along with video to protect yourself.

Strange isn’t it, if you have a non compliant plate you get points 🤷‍♂️

There are a lot of cars here around Manchester and leafy parts of Cheshire that do not Sport a front numberplate.

Vain craze for young & older folk. Very popular for Ferraris and Lamborghinis not to have one.

Also, many have heavily tinted plates.

So what are the chances of getting prosecuted for not having correct plates?

There is additional changes according to a news item on the radio, personalized plates if not presented as intended and if reported twice by the police to the DVLA, they will remove the number and replace it with a Q plate..

I see this Pickup on a regular basis. The guy wo drives it is around 60 years old.

Illegal Windows (over tinted)
No front reg plate
Tinted rear plate
Tinted headlamps, side lights, indicators

The full works.

Looks a right W*N*K*RView attachment 524379
There should be zero tolerance for this, I wouldn't mind betting if they were stopped, there would be other more serious offences, no seat belt worn? Using phone? No insurance? Drugs?

The simplest sanction for those who abuse personalised plate rules is to withdraw the plate. Many are under the impression that they 'own' the plate whereas they have only paid for the permission to display it; a permission which can and should be withdrawn for those who cannot behave. The enforcement teeth are there, just there seems little enthusiasm for action.

Yet DVLA make a healthy profit supplying unusual numbered plates 🙄

Both no number plate and excess speed are level three offence scale which is max £1000

Yes that is no number plate as in one. Leave both off it is as I said before. & the likelihood of anyone being fined 1k is dream world.

Sadly, I'm not sure that any change in the law will stop the so-minded from doing what they are determined to do.
They will either ignore the rules or find a way around them.
Sadly the only reason for fitting non legal plates come down to vanity or ANPR evasion.
These recent 3D plates cast shadows & are not as easy to read as the proper plates, so its high time they were outlawed, if only people realised that illegal plates invalidate your insurance.

I was once chatting to a mate who is a traffic cop in a local vehicle recovery yard & the insurance guy showed up to evaluate a Porsche 911 turbo which was less than 6moths old.
The insurance guy knocked the claim back due to number plates which had been "tweaked" to make it look like the owners name, not to MOT standard, therefor not fit for road use.
So beware.

I have just been reading the thread

Manchester clean air zone May 2022

The new number plate regs. and the ANPR system will certainly come into its own here.
Another fund raising exercise?

I apologise if this subject has already been raised, but is everyone aware of impending changes to the law regarding number plates?

"New number plate standards are also being introduced. From September 2021, plates will be made from a tougher material that is not only more resilient, but also shows up better on ANPR cameras. Two-tone number plates will not be permitted, and only solid black digits will be allowed"

I only learned of this yesterday, but I lead a sheltered life. :giggle:

My Plates are in great nick.

I got this fail today.

But as I posted elsewhere. Many motorists do not have a front number plate or dark tinted

I had a warning light come up on one of our telescope forklifts today. Whilst trying to find the manual I found a number plate, hadn’t even realised it was registered as road legal.
Had to check with the transport dept.
