The joy of the likes of Denmark, Norway and Finland is that everyone speaks English....so if language is a bit of a psycological barrier...it really needn't be when you head North.I'd love to take my van to Scandinavia. I've been before I had a van, and loved it.
I've taken my van into mainland Europe before with no hassle at all, but for some reason I'm suddenly a bit nervy about taking it 'further in/up' as I travel solo. I'm not bothered about the travelling solo bit, I've done that for years, I'm just suddenly anxious about 'something happening' so that I have a problem with the van. Or myself.
Every time I see threads like this I feel the pull of the North though!
It took us 4 weeks, to drive up Norway, though we did go to Hell & Nordkapp. Our dream trip! We were planning on a 3 week trip in September but have decided to postpone until we can spend more time away, as we limit our daily travelling time to about 4 hours max because of our dog, and we would lose too much time getting there and back. ......One day! Looks amazing.
Arrived 2 weeks ago, 31st it goes on ramp, @ 4.6t they only have 1 ramp, 15 other mh bought in while we've been here.I feel your pain! Do you know how long you’ll be stuck there? Looks a fantastic trip.
I admire your positive spirit, must be very frustrating to interrupt your tour.Arrived 2 weeks ago, 31st it goes on ramp, @ 4.6t they only have 1 ramp, 15 other mh bought in while we've been here.
Drop oil, if there are bits we're buggered. As you can imagine, parts are an issue, Santa/elves can't make them.
It's interesting looking at the diagnostic data, multiple, "could be" statements.
Not looking good, all updates done, me thinks it's going to be a recovery back to UK.
Bright side it gearbox could have broken on Tindevegan or Mount Evans when we were in USA with mh.
Given the 9sp auto has a known issue I wrote to Swift asking why they had not advised customers.
Reply was it a Fiat issue nothing to do with Swift, before the keyboard warriors weigh in, I was not asking Swift to fix but simply saying you sell £100k motorhomes how about a little customer service.
Retired so other than our EU 90 days no big issue, OH did I say we fly to OZ for 2.5 months following the Ashes in November
We did Norway in May this year. Spent 4 weeks in Western Fjords. Weather was excellent, mostly dry and sunny, 16 to 18C. Went as far north as Alesund. No problem getting into aires or sites, though we noticed a huge jump in the volume of motorhomes on the road in the last week in May.After delay at Eurotunnel we used the park n ride at Eindhoven for a flying stop then had a journey through thunder and roadworks beset with lunatic drivers near Hamburg. we wanted to overnight in The Most lovely village of Sittensen but it was crammed full with vans who looked as if they were spending the summer there …. Ended up in a forested aire in Heidenau. That was lovely think it cost 13€
Weather has been astonishing - over 30 degrees where we are now: and in previous stop at Ishoj Strand campsite near Copenhagen .Ishoj Strand was an excellent stop , ten mins walk to the train and a fiver to get into Centre and back. Arrived late on the 16 th and still got to see most of the city , went in again the next day and it was very busy. Then found a free lay-by parking space near some Viking Stones in Sweden - Stenskeppet. Fantastic walks round the stones ( it was near Stromstad.) and a small stream running nearby the parking. …
Then the Folk Museum just outside Oslo - parked for day there and got ferry to Oslo - then back to the Folk Museum which was excellent , like the Black Country museum only with grass roofed wooden buildingsCar park machine confusing, no overnighting but free after 3 pm …
Lillehammer next - Free parking again ( but campsites let you use black n grey waste for a small fee- also stops on the roads sometimes have waste dumps ) at the top of the ski lifts.
Alesund was our next stop but this idea was shared by several million other camper vans so we had to come back to Andulsness and arrived at Saltkjelsness camping at Eidsbygda just before 9 pm… we called the campsite and they were full but said we could stay in their overflow car park for the night and hope someone left… We walked round when we arrived and hearts sank as it is the most idyllic spot we have ever seen.. who would leave ? But luckily someone did and we have abandoned plans for 4 nights -and btw this is the cheapest campsite we have seen in Norway !!!! - showers and loos spotless, lots of pitches at the fiord side….. popped out to take a late p/m trip to the Trollstein pass which apparently had lovely views but I had eyes shut for a lot of the driving ( I was not driving ) but when on Terra Firma the waterfalls were stunning. The fiord here is great for kayaking and we have been swimming everyday the water is not icy cold, almost warm ! Non veggie campers have been fishing every day and the lovely couple in the caravan next to us are going home with 40 kilos of fish they have caught , gutted and frozen () but each to their own .
Been planning next trip further north after all the tips we have had from friendly fellow campers, and have tried to put a photo on… never worked before butView attachment 1090511 ivies from our window here at Saltkjelsness
We recently stayed a couple of nights at the campsite there, it was superb (altho the sound of the in spate waterfall was like a Jet Engine on take off...constantly) The walk to the Glacier was so worth the effort.Think I have sussed out which way up the photos are … this is the car park / overnight stop at Briksdalsbre Glacier is beautiful - long walk uphill to it from car park . Nice shop and cafe here
The roads in Germany are not even remotely as good as the legends promise (and always under construction with 2m width limits for all lanes but one). Wasn’t impressed.W
We have used the ferry but they aren’t very frequent so it can involve a 2 hour wait so you might as well crawl through traffic and in fact we had a good run through Hamburg going South. Having said that the roadworks got worse after Hamburg and were dreadful all the way to Cologne and beyond. We were pleased to reach Belgian roads and I never thought I’d say that!
It's a forum glitch since the last update, Jim has just applied a temporary fix, will be corrected properly with the next update.Ooops thought I had righted them … exhausted from walk to glacier. FLAM tomorrow , will try to do less badly x
That was our impression too (outside of Bavaria where there were perfect). The roads in Germany are not even remotely as good as the legends promise (and always under construction with 2m width limits for all lanes but one). Wasn’t impressed.
It's a good cardio-vascular workout isn't it. Not sure I'd want to drive up through the fjords though. I get giddy on thick carpet.Ooops thought I had righted them … exhausted from walk to glacier. FLAM tomorrow , will try to do less badly x
Yes it’s a great site- stayed there a few weeks back. Superb fjord views and very quiet even when it is full.Taking ages to load but this is the campsite here Eisbygda our van first pic, slight rhs second , view to left 3 rd

There is a lovely aire with electric in the center of Trondheim near the bus stationHope you have a great trip - we'll be coming along with you vicariously - we were planning driving to Trondheim as the first outing for our new (and now much delayed) van!
Which route did you choose. Last year we went north via A7 (from Switzerland) and it was not the best experience. Tomorrow we start driving north again, and we were thinking to go via Cologne (to avoid the A7), but as I understand from you it’s pretty much the same?got worse after Hamburg and were dreadful all the way to Cologne
We were staying South of Liege so picked up the 4 near Auchen then joined the 1 and it was roadworks all the way to Hamburg where we joined the 7 . It never ground to a halt but the days of speedy Autobahns haha!Which route did you choose. Last year we went north via A7 (from Switzerland) and it was not the best experience. Tomorrow we start driving north again, and we were thinking to go via Cologne (to avoid the A7), but as I understand from you it’s pretty much the same?
Couldn't agree more, MoHo heaven. We're on a similar route to you by the looks of it. Been throgh Denmark and up through Norway to Lofoten, Nordkapp and presently in Finland. Have the ferry booked to Umea in Sweden on Thursday. I can count the number of UK vans on one hand! So many amazing free park-ups, it's so good.We are presently further up and getting the Bognes ferry as I forgot to book the Bodo route on to the Lofoten Isles.I have not seen any UK vans here so far after two weeks. This country is motorhome heaven ?
Not used a campsite with so many wild camp options and services provided at many locations. If I can be of any help to answer questions,no problem if it helps to encourage others to come here.

I hope you went to the old leprosy hospital. It was very quaint. Now in Bergen in a car park/ aire with water and waste disposal, 5 mins walk to tram to get to centre. It’s Mindeymiren Bobil Parker in. Journey here from Flam via the waterfall you can stand under was so beautiful , the Hardangerfiord stunning and again very warm here. The road has a lot of rockfall and stoppages , but nothing can beat the herd of wild goats that stopped us on the way to Flam- they had their own warning sign and the chaos they caused showed up on the Tom Tom. No plans as yet as to where to go to from here, will stay in Bergen tomorrow , fish n chips at a posh place on the front after a boat tour to Mostraumen : this was the only tour that didn’t include the return to Flam and the train etc.
Hoping for a big win on the premium bonds this month to pay for the meal tomorrow,Norway knows how to charge
! But a bonus is a dearth of anything to buy that is made here to take home as presents for cat sitters , grandkids etc , our excuse not to ! Be good fellow MHfunsters xx
I found it fascinating and such a lot to learn.I hope you went to the old leprosy hospital. It was very quaint.View attachment 1094219
