We have just spent 21 days crossing Northern Poland in our 4 ton old Hymer
There is not much info on here about this part of the world so here is a little bit.
Our biggest mistake occurred on our way to the Polish border at Szezecin as we went on the A11 motorway east of Berlin. Two or three miles of it must be the worst road surface in Europe. Known as Hitler's Highway this bit has still not been replaced.
Being over 3.5 ton we had to buy an electronic toll box.
We bought a Via Toll box at the border.
No problem at all. The box cost a refundable £25 and we loaded it with 100 euros which was probably much too much but is refundable on leaving the country. The girl told us that was good for 1000 km. To cross the north into Lithuania cost about £11 in tolls. You can trace how much you have spent on it using their App once you have the Via Toll box.
Having heard nightmare stories about the road surfaces we were apprehensive as to whether or not the motorhome would survive ( well it didn't in Lithuania) Most of the main roads were new, some were awful, some minor roads were terrible so we learnt to ask people before setting off for the next day's driving what was good and what was bad.
Diesel cost about 5 zl which is about £1.10
We do not wildcamp if we can help it and in nine stops we spent between 10 and 20 euros for each night. The campsites and camperstops we used were all good and some were much better than that! We used Campercontact for most of them and had no trouble finding space on any of them.
We visited some fascinating historical sites, came across an enormous festival weekend and met some lovely people. We also learnt a lot of history that ashamedly we did not know about.
We took local advice and stayed away from the coast because it was too busy with holidaymakers. We did go to a popular seaside resort and immediately left. It wasn't what we really wanted . The fact that the sea was full of blue green algae did not seem to put people off.
Beer and eating out is cheap, almost Benidorm prices!
Our best buy was four huge sheepskin rugs for the motorhome for £80
We saw only one GB registered motorhome which was going the other way. Most visitors were German Italian or Scandinavian
We then went on to the Baltic States and are still there at the moment.
