No more dogs

:smiley: One week today since our little cockapoo joined us and in that time she's had a name change. She's now Ruby which just seems to suit her better and she's sleeping in her crate with no objections. In fact we're amazed at how content she is to sleep in it, if she goes to sleep on our laps (which is almost always )we pop her in her crate and she stays asleep. I've been getting up a couple of hours after she's gone down for the night and if she's awake she goes out for a wee and then back to bed . I'm up at 6 and she's slept through me making a cuppa and banging around  I've vacuumed around her and she sleeps, what a little doll she is :smiley:. Once she's awake it's full on fun and games, especially in the garden despite the awful weather, she goes out in the rain and wind very happily. Can't believe how good she's been for her first week and keeping our fingers crossed she carries on being such a good girl  Granddaughters adore her and she loves playing with them. Vet gave her the once over before her first vaccination and said she was fine so that's a relief. Just started to take her out to meet people and she seems to be unfazed by traffic noise and people but as soon as a dog comes along she wants to get down and play. It's going to be the first week in the New Year before she can do that and I expect she's going to go potty the first time she meets other dogs. Halle is still doing the "I see no puppy" so she's not getting lessons from her on social skills  I've been using a long lead in the garden so she can run around safely and she's already coming when she's called, so will start whistle training next week :smiley: She's certainly living up to the cockapoo reputation, clever, active and flipping gorgeous :smiley::smiley: Tomorrow will be her first outing in the motor home. We're off to a friend's birthday party and staying overnight in the pub carpark. I'm not going to the party as I'll stay with the dogs but will take them in to say hello, so Ruby will learn early that motorhoming means fun :smiley:

Cl ever gorgeous girl....and she will be racing you to the motorhome very shortly. I like her new name. Such a sweetie!

What a pretty pup, wishing you many happy & healthy years together.

D
Itch the crate. Cockapoos are Velcro dogs and need to be with their people. Let her be in your room. And don’t leave her to cry, it’s so old school. Have a read of this. It’s very informative. I’m talking as a Cockapoo lover. Now have 4 of the glorious creatures.
Gus slept snuggled up under my chin until he settled, he has been really good for ages now. Of course I get up and take him out when he needs it, but I don't mind. All the dedication is worth it.

Lovely looking dog.

When our previous dog died we swore we would have no more, but only lasted 18 months before we had to give in!

Spent the night in the Horse and Groom car park Westbury after a 65th party for a childhood friend. Arrived to a very warm welcome and had a lovely roast dinner. Ruby slept throughout the meal, she was very relaxed for her first pub visit. Had a really good night she slept in her travel cage all night appearing at 6 to go out for a wee. Now having breakfast before setting off. Ruby has had a great introduction to motorhoming, we're so pleased:smiley:

Enjoyed reading all the good advice here. I've just put our name on the waiting list for a miniture poodle puppy. We're away until end of February so hope to choose a puppy as soon as we return. Depending on what happens with Brexit (hopefully it will all go up in smoke) we hope to be off to Europe with the puppy in the motorhome early June. Haven't had a dog for years and years but we're very excited at the prospect of a puppy. Hope to pick up lots of puppy information here.

Friends have just recently got a miniature poodle - he's lovely …. however they both say because he is so light, he can make himself comfy on one or other of their feet and fall asleep unbeknown to them. As they get up they innocently send him flying or tread on him, kick him or whatever. Need to keep your eyes trained on the floor whenever you move.

Absolutely right. We're avoiding Ruby seeing feet as a plaything for that reason:smiley: and we're not letting her rush through doors first because it's so easy to trap little paws  so far we've not tripped over or trodden on her but you're so right, we need to keep our eyes on the floor because she likes to keep close or dash in front

Soz but I’ve to ask, just glanced responses so may well have been answered, what is a bulls pizzle? Not his John Thomas is it?

Are you corrupting a minor?

Yes it is and it really pongs. Unfortunately Ruby really likes them and is her favourite treat. She settles down in her playpen really happily with it. We don't give it to her in the carpet::bigsmile:. You have to be careful to take it away when it gets to small to avoid choking. Have tried a number of other things but pizzle wins every time::bigsmile:

Ruby is so gorgeous, she really looks like she has taken to motorhoming. I had been following your thread before I joined up but of course then you can only see the thumbnails, now I can see how beautiful she is, Maddie too and all the other dogs:xsmile:

I have started looking around for a cockerpoo puppy or young rescue. Thought it best to concentrate on Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournmouth areas as easy to access for me. Very few registered breeders have any pups and I was horrified at the lack of information on pets4home(?) when I had a quick look there. Often no info or pics of parents, you could just tell that some had no love for the pups they and were just in it for the money. A real minefield out there.

True. In 1966, there was only 2 cars in our road.

You're right, you have to do your research. I must have looked at every rescue centre in the south and there were lots of dogs needing a good home. I was looking for a dog that would fit in with our lifestyle and more importantly one that Halle wouldn't be at risk from. Cockapoos get a good write up for being energetic, intelligent and biddable and my friend's rescue poo is exactly that. I chose a puppy because I thought it was less risky for Halle and so far (1week:smiley:) Ruby appears to be very trainable, even though she is a bundle of mischief and fun. We got her from an advert on Pets4home and I agree the ads need careful scrutiny because of unscrupulous breeders. Good luck with your search :smiley:

:xgrin: Ruby has been with us 3 weeks on Saturday and is a real joy. It looks like she's going to be an enthusiastic motorhomer :xgrin:. We'll be off in the van as soon as she can mix with other dogs. The only thing we're going to have to teach her is to stay off the seats and as the pictures show

PS Ruby is not responsible for the state of the chairx:-) we really need to do something about our scruffy but very comfy swivel chairs. Maybe Santa could get a couple down the chimney :xgrin:

In my view it’s very unnatural to cage a dog.
That's a human viewpoint, if I may say - to a dog, properly introduced, it is a natural place of safety & security. Their den, a place of refuge or retreat, when they want to take a timeout. A place to relax...
...they don't see the bars.

IMG_20190102_100716986.jpg The "not on the chairs" training is going well  After a good Christmas and New Year at home we're off to Dorset for a short trip in a few weeks. It's Ruby's second trip in the van and this time we're going for 4/5 nights. Fingers crossed she's as good as she was the first time  She's had all her vaccinations now so she can socialise with other dogs from next week  hopefully this trip will be more fun for her  and she will be as good as Halle at motorhoming
