I have a Netgear Nighthawk M1 and having difficulty getting it to work. I have purchased a sim and installed it. I have booted it up and inputted the password but it will not connect to the Internet.

I have tried it in my phone and it works fine.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Have you logged onto the nighthawk via it's wifi connection to see what (if any) errors are being reported. You should also be able to check that the nighthawk is trying to connect to the correct network for your sim card. The help pages for the mobile network will normally show what the connections need to be set to.

Alternatively, there is a netgear app you can load onto a phone which allows most functions to be viewed and error messages checked. I seem to remember that the network can send a text to the phone number on the Sim as part of the first time connection process. You will need to access this via the app or web interface

Apologies for asking this but the Sim Card does allow use in a router, not just a phone?

As said above download the app, you should be able to find out what is going wrong. TBH the constant faff with sim chips is why I bit the bullet and installed Starlink.

Have you checked the APN settings?

Where did you buy it? I ask as many of the Ebay Nighthawks are from Australia & NZ and won't work in the U.K. Our M1 works fine even without any type of aerial even in the Highlands.

enough to know i shouldnt touch things i know nothing about ....
It will be the APN settings...... I assume you can find them on the menu on the M1 (as they are on the M2)

Quite often it's basically a homepage address, it's not complicated but can be awkward if you're unsure.

Coincidently I installed a new lebara sim into my nighthawk this morning.I installed the sim and turned the nighthawk on.It immediately showed Lebara 4g as the network.I opened the netgear app and a message box asked if i wanted to update the settings on my router.I pressed update and that was it.All working fine.

Were/are there M1 routers locked to specific network providers? Also, were there not cases of those locked to EE being unable to download/install Netgear updates to fix known issues (no idea if that was resolved)?

Edit: the firmware update scenario I was thinking of was actually this M2 example…

Moto GBR If you are at the TT Races on the Isle of Man, it might be that your Sure network counts that as out of the UK and to connect you might have to have roaming enabled?

Here in Llandudno, especially up on the Great Orme we occasionally get "welcome to the Isle of Man" texts when the phones connect to masts there - that implies the island is being treated as a roaming location.

How are you getting on, have you managed to get the phone app and connected to the router ok?

I have a M2 Nighthawk, use it with Smarty on which I also have two PAYG phone sims, one benefit is that you can alter your monthly subs as per your needs.
Works fine for me.

Thanks for the replies.

I have the sim in my sons phone and using as a Hotspot. Will try later this evening when we get back from todays racing to see if we can get the router to work.
