NFU Insurance

Never insured with them will probably try next time , but when I tried and got a quote from the NFU for Home Insurance ( although great cover) the quote was way over twice as much as others I tried so never took it up.
Went for home insurance but was told with a quiet superiority that they were not cheap and it would not suit me!
I told her she was probably right as I hated being ripped off by snobby birds!

Word of warning I think NFU’s attitude to expensive vehicles may have changed since they got their fingers burned with writing off a super car they had insured for only a few hundred £s. My last renewal had to be checked out by the underwriters.

The results of my quote came through today and after a couple of calls with NFU (incredibly helpful BTW) it does indeed appear that NFU has taken a much riskier stance on high valued vehicles.

Not sure Jez as this was for a new MoHo quote. I was informed a few times by the agent that NFU had recently changed the way it views high end vehicles although I don't know where the high end threshold starts.

Not certain but I think I was told £70k.

Spoke to someone tonight who I don’t think knew much about Motorhome’s.

Unfortunately I got put through to I think the head office.

I’ll try again tommorow ?

Try one of the helpful agencies named in this thread.

Don't know where you live so maybe a no go, but you do really get better service in an office.
Edit sorry see I was too late

I initially walked into my local office but they suggested phoning another office, in the same franchise, so that I could speak to someone who was more expert in motorhome matters. It worked very well for me and I am still dealing with the same helpful person.

Incidentaly my local branch (Durham) will not give me a quote on any van, regardless of price, unless we first transfer our home and motor insurance to them first.

It wasn’t our post code it was because of the solar installation ?

I’ll call one of the offices tommorow mentioned in this thread ?

Did they ask about your solar, never asked me anything apart from the normal things they ask for a car.
As everyone on here knows ours is a converted ambulance and not an eyebrow raised.

As post code has been raised I thought I would put up the insurers table:-
Broken Link Removed
It is clear that if your post code (where you keep the van) has an A rating then there is no issue, I suspect that those that are getting high premiums or rejection, or intensive scrutiny are into bands that whilst not the badlands are in excess of the underwriters risk criteria. It would be useful for those of you that have experience of NFU either as successful customers or otherwise that they post their post code band (not the postcode just the band after refering to the link above) and a comment on their experience.
I am band A and have had a great experience with premiums that are very competitive and not real scrutiny.

The NFU is the most successful representation body for agriculture and horticulture in England and Wales. ... their purpose is to champion British agriculture and horticulture, to campaign for a stable and sustainable future for British farmers and to secure the best possible deal for our members.

Everyone in the above posts are referring to NFU Mutual. A completely different company to NFU but they are the official insurers for NFU.

Motorhome insurance can be offered by any of their 300 or so offices UK wide. These officies are mostly run by self employed agents who employee their own staff and run their own officies on a self employed basis as tied agents to NFU Mutual.

I know the staff in my local office and they know me so you can pretty much deal with the same person each time. It's well worth calling into your local office for a face to face quote.

NFU Mutual will not be the cheapest but regards to cover and service they are as good as the best and better than most. Thats why they come first 98% of the time in the Auto Express annual survey and Which Magazine also put them in the top catagory.

They are a Mutual company so a proportion of the profits are given back to policyholders.

If they're good enough for me and I'm particular & choosey then they should be good enough for you!

My home postcode is rated B but where I store the motorhome is A. NFU have been fine with me at both addresses. I think some of the Franchises that do not want motorhome business use post code or other matters as an excuse. It is still important to use one of the offices that are happy to do motorhome business.

When I had a tractor I used to deal direct with head office at Stratford on Avon

I don't disagree but I think pc will make a significant difference and I was trying to take a straw pill.

PO 18 for me so comes in at an A
Looking at some of the places there are lot’s of E & F ☹️☹️
Wouldn't fancy their insurance premium☹️

It would be interesting to see those with more undesirable post codes get offered. As Andrew @ Blue Knight has declared his experience it would be good to know his banding?

Just my brief experience.
Can't be too keen for new business. Left electronic email from their website and a phone call. One week later and still no call back that was promised for a quotation.

Not too bothered as Grove and Dean at £224 including breakdown is fine for me.

Makes you wonder about the “refer” ones!!
See some you need to have your car garaged when it’s at your house or the insurance is void, pretty standard for motorbikes though.

I nearly tried NFU until I found there breakdown and recovery was limited to 5.5 mtrs. They deny it till I pointed it out in small print. Never heard from them again

Yes I told them of non standard items ie sat dish, solar etc.
I was asked if I carried gas bottles ?

Post code not an issue ?

I was trying to get a better picture of the "weighting" that may be applied because of increasing post code banding risk, and at what point, say a D for example, that achieving cover became almost impossible. So if for example someone on here says their experience was difficult and the premium excessive and the were storing in a band D then a picture could become apparent. The D band quote for example only. However my question seems too complicated.

We're a C-grade but, even so, we still have a significant insurance profile and every one of our policies is as cheap as chips, according to the boss lady.

Example: Our current MY19 camper is almost as low to insure as the most basic advertised rate which Comfort offers on its web page. I'm therefore not really seeing much of a correlation between the grades versus the costs, but then again, I don't understand this insurance stuff.

Nicky's family have all been moving from the SE (Grade C and D*) to Cornwall over the last few years and all four of their postcodes are now Grade-A albeit surprisingly two of their policies have increased - and by a few quid too (not with NFU though). Funny enough we were just talking about this very subject before Xmas.

All the best,

Andrew
