Newhaven to Dieppe

 Is the high speed rail line any benefit for just your 3.9 miles?
Haha.

At least the benefits now outweigh the blighting it did when planned.

Now developers building thousands of "luxury" houses can use it to entice Londoners to move down here....

Hopefully here’s a link (apols if MHF rules do not allow) to a local article for those who are interested in more details of the 5 year contract award/extension.

Having been annual users of the Chunnel for last 20 years or so, we decided to try Newhaven-Dieppe service especially as the price at the time was half that of the tunnel for early July.

Living in the west, the drive was 30miles/30mins less and really enjoyable (quiet) on the M23 past Gatwick compared with staying longer on the M25 towards Folkestone.

A sunny summer late afternoon crossing was a pleasant novelty and pleased to find we could get a refreshing chilled glass of Thatchers Gold (from a can) from the fairly limited bar.

Returning from a week in sunny Normandy we decided to book again with DFDS for our two week break to the Côte d’Azur last month. Great service and value again, looking to secure dates for 2023, we learned that the Transmarche crossing was out to tender with the existing award to DFDS expiring 31/12/22. Heard rumours that it might go to BF we thought that would be the end of that but we’re pleasantly surprised to learn last week that with a subsidy from French government the route was retained and the “franchise” awarded to DFDS for another five years - excellent news! Interested in the note that expansion of high/season crossings may increase (currently 3 per day, which is fine for us).

As of yesterday 2023 dates were not available to book, but the (minor) dilemma now for our June break to the Atlantic coast is whether to hold on until Feb when we qualify for the extra (20%) discount or get it booked in the next few weeks.

Great news indeed for a great service, increased choice and all those individuals and employees dependent on the contract award whether in France or UK. Nice one! 👌

Oh god, a 14 hr mission after a lovely abroad holiday, that would be a killer, Newhaven would not be described as a holiday destination but its a handy little port , definitely no frills though, couple of ticket kiosks and a boat thats about it

I'm pretty sure that unlike at Dieppe, none of the disembarking passengers have any intention of actually 'visiting' Newhaven. I used to work there 30 years ago on the industrial estate opposite the harbour and it hasn't changed much.
I always think that passengers having left the vibrant, busy and quaint Dieppe with its colourful harbourside restos must be disappointed when entering scruffy Newhaven with only heaps of rusting scrap piled on the quay ready for loading onto a ship.

We like the Newhaven crossing. Spend 10 - 12 hours getting to the port on a Friday, then snooze in the check-in lines for the midnight boat, off at 5am, and down to Rouen for a wee sleep then hang about for Parkrun on the quay before heading south. (Parkrun currently off in France)
And when coming home, take the evening boat, then sleep in the carpark (just ask the staff if it is ok - which it is, but it is nicer to ask) then up before dawn and try to clear the M25 before it clogs up. Home before bed (430 miles north)

Cheaper than the tunnel, and ideal if you are heading to Western France.
