Newhaven to Dieppe

We used it this summer both ways with kids in car. Looking forward to our outbound trip Sunday night in moho just Alex and I. Hope it’s not rough

Good news indeed. It's my favourite and very local port.
In school hols in the mid and late 50's I used to accompany my commercial traveller father on his rounds and we parked lunchtimes at the port to watch the cars being craned on and off the ferries. It was a summer only service and during the 50's the discontinuance of the ferry service was frequently discussed within British Rail who ran the service.

Its our local port too, so handy when you get home to have a short journey.

Oh god, a 14 hr mission after a lovely abroad holiday, that would be a killer, Newhaven would not be described as a holiday destination but its a handy little port , definitely no frills though, couple of ticket kiosks and a boat thats about it

That is one of the plusses that I enjoy too. It's a friendly little stress-free port. Off the afternoon ferry at 7 and home easily before 8. Being a yachtie I also look forward to the 4hr crossing as part of the holiday.
In fact with the diesel and ferry fare it's less expensive for me to go to a welcoming Normandy (a 17 mile drive) than to a restrictive Cornwall, which pre-motorhome was my regular holiday destination.

The first time I arrived there I wondered was it the right place. There seemed to be no one around, just a few deserted vehicles. It livened up just before departure time, and the attendants didn't seem that interested. But yes, a pleasant short crossing, just that it takes me as long to get there as Folkestone. And you can be 3 hours down the road in France. But now there's no Frequent Travellers, mabe might rethink.

Not much point in owning a Motorhome in the UK unless you live near a channel port.:rofl:

Newhaven is 26 miles for us or 22 mile if we go via the Brighton bypass.
Chenneks not bad for us eith as we combine it with a family visit to BIL only 20 min to tunnel from there.

Portsmouth is a pain that's 40 miles away.

It's alright for some! We used to live 30 mins from Portsmouth, but was running own business so could rarely get away. Plymouth now 2hrs, but too dear and don't like long ferry journeys, Pompeii 2.5 hrs, also too dear, etc.

Hopefully they will put the timetable out for for 2023 and we can start making bookings. Or at least check the prices.

Am I correct that over 60’s get a discount ?

20% off the whole ticket (not cabins) provided that the lead (named) person is over 60 or reg'd disabled or a student. You have to phone the number shown on their website as n/a online.

Brilliant. Thanks. I assume that also applies for the Newcastle to Ijmuiden route too ?

Will have to get SWMBO to make the booking as the lead person then. As I am too young 😂👍😂

I don't know about that route.
The Newhaven discount was written into the contract very many years ago when the (heavily loss making) service was about to close but was taken over and operated jointly by East Sussex C.C. and the Dieppe Chamber of Commerce.

Yes but you have to swim the last 10% or is it 20
I'm a 4th generation Brightonian and I remember a fisherman back in the 60's on Brighton beach who did short pleasure trips of about a dozen people with his open rowboat out and around the Palace Pier and back and who hollered out:

"Arfway to France for a tanner, the other 'arf tomorrer".

Newhaven to Dieppe was my fist ever crossing with a car to France en-route to Basel, Swiss to stay with friends in 1991.
I will never forget my surprise on arriving in Dieppe it was late at night when we left the port and started our route towards Basel.
On driving through the small towns of Northern France, there wasn't any evidence of life, shutters closed no lights in windows, no street lights apart from flashing orange belisha beacons at pedestrian crossings, no traffic whatsoever, not even a cat crossing the road. It was quite a contrast from The UK, almost spooky, it was nearly the same when we hit the motorways, hardly any traffic only the occasional lorry.
Newhaven to Dieppe ferry would be my 1st choice these days as we don't have many Tesco vouchers for the tunnel, plus the prices since Covid Lockdown seem to have risen considerably at all times of the day/night departures.
A nice evening 4 hour cruise to get you in the mood for your touring holiday, no massive queues on motorways to get to the port, much more relaxed in so many ways, especially if you are heading down the west side of France.

Shame they do not allow Dogs on the decks for the crossing, just make them stay in your van. Ours slobbers howls and gets distressed left alone. A dog is for life but living near Newhaven means we drive to the tunnel instead of use the ferry sadly.

That's what most French villages are like even in daytime, we often wonder if anyone actually lives in them.

Discount only for Newhaven Dieppe route !!!
C&CC give 10% on other routes, we got Amsterdam/Newcastle Inc. cabin £177, not bad for a 16 hour crossing.
