I know it’s not what you asked but I have 2 sons who live in NZ and we have been 9 times there. It’s not cheap to hire a camper, we find that a small car with Airbnb and lodges works for us but each to their own.

I would agree with this. Enjoyed about 10 days in motor home. Be careful on west coast of south island, some parts have the dreaded sand flies that have vicious bites. Worse on the state owned sites. Air bnb were generally a better option.
