New Zealand touring

If one only had 3 weeks to tour one of the ialands which of the 2 would would those that have done both choose.
South from Feb to April. Any other time North. Or North of the South.

There is a massive difference in whether as you go South to North.

Auckland is on the same southerly as Malaga is northerly. South of the North = South of France

As a former resident our view of New Zealand is different (and controversial). Yeah the scenery is great and we loved some places. However there are some serious limitations. Most of the towns and cities are pretty boring. A typical town will have maybe a pub (that shuts at 7pm!), a diary (supermarket) and about 20 Chinese coffee shops. If you like the outdoors (and nothing else) its the place for you. Sat out with you BBQ miles from anywhere. For some motorhomers that's heaven. Not for us. Oh and they don't have proper ale! As they say themselves, there is more culture in a Yoghurt. Its quite expensive too

You gotta do it once though (y) . Its an experience

Give me France or even better Spain anytime

Done France and Spain to death.
We have been to NZ a couple of times but only on a cruise ship. Don't get chance to see the proper NZ.
And outdoors out of the citys on the open road suits us down to the ground.
Having done 10s of thousand of miles around Australia we are thinking maybe it's time to have a look at NZ. We could and probably would do at least 4 weeks not 3.
Ta for the info.
Other option i'm thinking is south America, but madam is not keen.

Its a tricky one. If you have done the cruise you have... And have not seen the real New Zealand. Depends what sort of thing you like I suppose. When we lived there we pined for Europe. But I would give it another go as a holiday. It's a bit like Aus though, yeah it's smaller, but then the population is less. So you can drive for 2 hours and see nothing but hills. That's great if you like that, bit we don't have don't.
