New Zealand or Bust

When we did our trip in 2001 we hired a small camper van from Britz fully kitted out, even asked us if we wanted duvet, sheets, sleeping bags, full bottle of gas etc. cost a thousand pound for three months hire. And at the time it was three dollars to the pound. 👍
Don't think they made camper vans in 1908 did they  :xrofl:

I was only approached once when we parked up as the wings had slipped don on the dash.

I used to wedge them in place with a used plastic milk container 😊

I didn’t mind being asked if I was a member to be honest.

The NZMCA app was superb with tons of information on it.
I struggled with the app, got it downloaded by changing my region to NZ but then iTunes wanted a credit card and address and wouldn't accept UK formatting, I gave up and just use the web site.

Kaikura was indeed fantastic , whales and a pod of hundreds of dolphins !
Just a few pics

Forgot to mention find the local working men's clubs. Very welcoming and you get to meet some locals.
We were expecting to see vast flocks of sheep never saw one. Similar to Australia never saw a wild kangaroo.

We did NZ as part of a round the world trip.
Never wanted to see the inside of a plane again.
We're flying business class, eight flights in nine weeks with the shortest stop being three nights, but I'm sure we'll feel the same.

My son Nick ad DIL will leave in 48hours for their 3rd NZ trip for two months with a hired motorhome. They took their inflatable kayak last time but for this trip they're taking Nick's self-designed tandem and he has made a dismantlable crate for it. It's £800 to ship it but they are both keen cyclists.
They always write an interesting blog.

The wheels are in a separate bag.

Hi Geoff

We are going out premium economy with 3 nights in Singapore with Singapore airlines, the Singapore to Aukland leg is New Zealand airlines, coming back we are direct business class, seems like we might have to make time for the Bay of islands, maybe we can fit it in at the end or possibly move the ferry depending how quickly we get around South island, anyway Happy Christmas to you and Basia and happy house hunting.
I should leave a little flexibity in the arrangements with the Ferry Martin, its not called windy Wellington for nothing, and it can affect ferry crossings.

Booked crossing with NZMCA membership and it’s supposed to be flexible at no cost so we can change if needed hopefully, nothing else booked either side of it so should be OK🤞

Are you both good sailors? Sue is generally the wobbly one with us but coped really well even when plenty around her were filling the sick bags. Biggest issue she had was when she came out on deck and the wind turned her handbag inside out and scattered everything down the deck, phone was never the same again

Shush, I’m saying nothing 🤔

Martin we are nt having to hunt - been offered good one.

Not to clutter up this thread I have sent you a PM.

Enjoy Christmas Day.

G+B

Possibly to keep you clear of the craggy rocks sticking out Martin. I wish we had gone clockwise when touring Southern Ireland........as the tour coaches do. ;)

Looking forward to reading about your trip. (y)
:)Seasons greetings. We spent a month (September) and traveled anti clockwise, north to south, on the wild Atlantic way. As Craig would say Fab u Lous. Didn’t really think about direction as there was very little traffic anyway. We were sooo lucky with the weather as well.
Phil n Gill 👍

Would love to do this trip, but the cost of Moho rental seems really high. Especially as you still have to pay for the sites. Is it possible to do rent a car and stay in low cost accommodation along the way?
For sure rentals are silly money, I think you can find plenty of low cost parking though and there are dump stations scattered around, well that's what I am hoping anyway, Joining the NZMCA seems to open up some really slow cost camping areas.

Well the foundations have been laid, flights are booked and a motorhome has been hired for 7 weeks touring North and South island, we land in Aukland at the end of January and have a few days acclimatising in an apartment before picking up a sub 7m motorhome, not a lot of storage, no inverter, no coffee machine, microwave only on hook up  ah well I am sure we will cope, oh and a cassette toilet so that will be a "blast from the past" after nearly 5 years with a black tank.

We don't have much of a plan at the moment, we have joined the NZ motor caravanners association and have several apps for parking places, we have booked a ferry North to South after 10 days on North island, we have 5 more days on North island on the way back to Aukland, one snippet I picked up on another thread was to travel Clockwise so unless anybody can offer a good reason to do the opposite that will be part of the plan.

There are a few obvious thing that we know we want to do/see,

Rotorua
Coromandel peninsula and I fancy a Kayak trip
Bay of islands

Dunedin and Otago peninsula as it seems to be the place for penguins
Franz Josef and Fox glacier
Milford Sound
A vineyard and wine tasting I am sure

Any suggestions and advice gratefully received(y)

Have a fantastic time.
Minor tip we were given, unpack your suitcases when you pick up your mh and leave them with the rental company if they will let you, saves some space.
We found Top 10 camping sites were very good and if you join you get discount vouchers for tourist places etc.
Fuel and stock up if staying at Milford Sound - when we went in 2014 there were no shops or fuel stations. It may of course be different now.
Take a boat up Milford Sound, they go right up to the waterfalls.
Do the ThunderJet trip at Queenstown.
So many amazing things to do and see!

We where lucky to swap our Motorhome 3 times for our trips to NZ , being careful to pick people who were similar ages to us and owned there motorhome for some time,
Might seem like ageism but they would be using ours in the UK so wanted people with a lot of experience, because driving in NZ is a doddle in comparison to here,

There is also a lounge on the ferry that you can book in advance .

I saw that but didn’t bother, should I ?
Personally, we don’t book the VIP lounge as the general seating area is adequate. It has lots of window space to admire the fantastic views as you glide through the Marlbourough Sounds.
I don’t recommend being too close to the cafeteria. The smell of the chips is enough to make you ill, even if the open sea doesn’t.
Crossing the Cook Strait on a calm day is awesome (an expression Kiwis use a lot!). You spend an hour gliding through The Sounds and it’s not uncommon to have a pod of dolphins swim alongside, then there’s an hour in the open sea, followed by another hour getting into Wellington Harbour which is quite spectacular, IMO.
Unfortunately, that hour in the open sea can get quite choppy if the conditions are right. I recommend you check the maritime forecast for the Cook Strait and buy some motion sickness tablets called Sea Legs.
I also have to apologise for the state of our ferries, both Interislander and Blue Bridge. They’re very, very old, many of them ex-P&O Channel ferries, and they break down frequently. They are a national disgrace and an embarrassment.
Don’t get me started on the ferries debacle!

If I said I wasn't jealous I'd be lying. Australia and New Zealand have been on my bucket list for a very long time.

I'd want to take train trips in addition to all the other suggestions.

Unfortunately, Puddleduck, NZ’s scenic railways are few and far between and certainly not of the standard you get with, for example, the Indian-Pacific or the Ghan in Australia.

That’s interesting to know. I remember some English friends who tried to take out temporary membership, probably pre-2016, and they were told by the NZMCA that this was not possible and that they didn’t allow overseas members, NZ residents only. That’s probably what I’m getting confused with and prior to 2016.
I would recommend that funflair picks up his NZMCA “wings” as soon as he can and puts them on a board of some kind that can be left on the dashboard where people can see it. Not only will this lead to him receiving lots of waves from fellow members, but it will prevent busy bodies from approaching him in NZMCA parks and accusing him of not being entitled to stay. Admittedly, the rules do state that your membership “wings” and number have to be displayed, but some people can be very high and mighty and take on a Little Hitler role.
They used to have reciprocal rights with the UK CCC which just waived the joining fee and would send the memberships packs overseas, we did that in 2019 when back home in NZ for an extended trip from the UK.

Are you sure you went to New Zealand it's impossible not to see any sheep, you used to see some as soon as you left Auckland Airport onto the road into the city but thats pretty much developed now.

When we were travelling from Queenstown to Doubtful we got stuck behind a huge herd of deer ( being farmed for venison ) The farmer was moving them to new pasture.
You see some wonderful sights in that wonderful country .

It worked faultlessly when we were over there.

I didn’t download it until we were in NZ so not sure if that made a difference.
But I found it invaluable, wasn’t just just NZMCA sites but showed all places for water and dump sites.

You can also stop at members residence if they live on a farm etc.

We stayed a stone’s throw away from Hobbiton, just across the valley 👍 at a members farm.

I might try again when in NZ but I have all those features on the web site so OK either way.

If you have a wetsuit you can🥶
