New Zealand or Bust

We like Oamaru it has some interesting shops and buildings, we were going to do the Steampunk museum this morning but we had a late start due to it chucking it down, we did have a walk dow Holmes Wharf and when the family at the end moved away we got a bit of a shock

It might look like it's sleeping in the photo but it was actually having a good scratch, I have a feeling it's a regular visitor looking at the stain on the wooden planking, this is a fur seal judging by the doggy looking snout and long whiskers.

There is a nice needlecraft and wool place that we had to visit KayeB would understand and indeed I took these pictures of a quilt just for her ;) the workmanship looked very good to me but what do I know?, it was a bit like a shared space where different crafts people could show and sell their wares, the lady we were speaking to was from Leeds originally and spun and hand dyed wool.

And then there was another craft place but Oops it had a motor museum out the back:LOL:

Stig Blomquist's Audi, the last one before the short wheelbase took over in rallying, I quite possibly saw this through the forest on the RAC rally.

If we are doing apt number plates here is a Austin A95 six cylinder ;)

And finally they have some nice municipal gardens for a wander (y) so all in all a good day in a nice town we could spend longer in but we have to keep moving onwards and upwards (North) we are heading for Christchurch tomorrow, unless we do the Steampunk before we leave.

Yvette and I would have seen this then, when we were marshaling on the 1985 Lombard RAC rally on the Sutton Park stages, the year before the Group B rally cars were banned.

Where was your forest viewing then Martin, Keilder forest?

A few stages in the Lakes and Wales, Cropton and Dalby would be pretty local to us but they ran Ingleby Greenhow 74 or 75 possibly and would be the first time I saw/heard a Lancia Stratos, we went to Sutton Park stage as Jens Mum and Dad lived just outside Sutton Coldfield, we always said you knew the RAC was starting because the first snows came. We saw Michele Mouton in a SWB Quattro at Harewood and she was "on fire" no not literally, I was with my brother and we just looked at each other and said WOW.

Michele Mouton is still around and involved in rally admin, not quite as pretty as she was in the 80`s, but still not bad for her age.

By coincidence, the last time I was in Oamaru, in November last year, the Silver Fern Motor Rally was driving through town. There were 30 Ford Escorts, a Porsche and one Fiat Stratos. Nearly all had British number plates. The Stratos suffered a bad crash, so did the Porsche and the rally was eventually won by an Escort RS drive by the appropriately named James Ford.

The sound was just as impressive as the sight! Fabulous cars.

I saw her tackle the goodwood fos in torrential rain in a swb, I can still see it today, completely sideway with huge roostertails. One of the most impressive drives I ever saw.

If I wasn’t happily married I could live with her on my arm 😉😊

She was at some exhibition indoor stage and rolled her ex husbands shorty I believe some years ago 🤔😊
