Hi folks, thought I would show how an obsolete screen can be complex and expensive, been on with this since covid! Just had the surround scanned today in prep for getting a quote for a new screen to be made.
Will try to keep updating with progress, or lack of it....

Didn't we recently read about the price of a Niesman & Bischoff windscreen replacement? Or maybe it was a Morelo. What was that - about £ 8 k? If this one has to be made from scratch it will presumably be even more?

Pity it doesn’t fit a Volvo truck spec.

I was surprised when I went with a mate to get a price for windscreen chip repairs on a 1961 merc 220s, here in spain.
"40€ per chip but it would be better & more economical if we installed a new screen @ 165€"

What, the 'fintail' type? Had a 1960 190 once (the round-tailed type).

I recommend you have a chat with ABM RV as they have helped with screens before. Adi completely changed his front end to accommodate Dad truck (?) screens at £350'ish each half...

Mine was 3000 euro in Germany £4500 at travel world +fitting🥴
You would not be the first one to realise it's considerably cheaper to drive to Germany to get even minor repairs done.
Belgium or the Netherlands may be even cheaper.
Especially if you can get a mid week, out of summer season, crossing.

Since the B word (that we are not allowed to use,) imports from the EU now get a 20% import tax added.

Do they? Are they not EU origin?

Exactly!

Just for the additional cost of the ferry.
But you get a 'free' few days in Germany/Netherlands/Belgium or wherever

They are.
We are not.
Hence the import tax we now have to pay
Is it an import tax? We have a tarrif-free trade agreement for EU/UK origin goods.

VAT, yes. Courier charges for collecting the VAT and doing the import paperwork, yes. But not import taxes or customs duties.

(Although I'm not clear on how it works with alcohol and tobacco, presumably that's not an importation tax, but simply collecting the revenue that would be due on UK sales.)

You appear to be correct.
However ....
One of the reasons companies have stopped sending individual spares is because of the paperwork.
What they now appear to be doing is consolidation of a shipment (a van full, a lorry full, a container full) and then sending it all over in one go, which may mean only one large shipment per month (or two), rather than daily or weekly shipments

But you would still be importing the screen.

Update...
Well, after asking 2 companies in the UK, 3 in Finland and 2 in Poland, none of whom were able/willing to take on the project of making a new screen from scratch I have finally found one in China who has agreed to do the job.

I had the frame/surround 3D scanned and created a 3D CAD file of the screen profile. They will produce the tooling and then make a small batch of screens which we will ship airfreight. Should have here by end of February, Chinese new year permitting. PSV Glass will install and then it's off to the sun...

What would they charge for 2 or 3 screens ?
I'd guess like most things, it's the first one that costs the money.

The copies are a lot cheaper.
It would be a good idea to have one spare for yourself and there must be other identical vehicles out there that also need screens.

( I used to be involved with a company that would occasionally source obsolete ship engine parts.
The cost to make the first copy might be $50k, but each other copy was $10k, a number of companies would then have 5 or 10 made. Keep one as a spare and sell the rest for $30k each.)

I have ordered 4 screens @ $550 each plus airfreight. It sounds a lot - and is, but I aint going anywhere without!
if your luck is anythinkg like mine you only need 1 spare of anything to guarantee you will never it but dont have a spare and it will fall out when you go over the first little pebble

The modelling and fabrication cost was $12000, I have ordered 4 screens @ $550 each plus airfreight. It sounds a lot - and is, but I aint going anywhere without!
Which means you need to sell your two spares for about $8-10k each to break even.
(Buyer collects!)

Make sure the company retains the modelling and the fabrication jig, as you may find there are more buyers out there, once word gets out that you have spares.
