Germany has introduced (1/1/18) a new tyre law for driving in winter conditions. Your tyre must have the Alphine snowflake symbol m+s is no longer acceptable. Michelin camper tyres do have the m+s, Continental don’t. Neither of these are legal if it’s snowing, sleeting or icy.
I was just about to change my tyres, think I need to rethink what ones I get now.
https://www.tyrepress.com/2017/07/germany-tightens-winter-tyre-requirement/

The link only states which symbol must be on the tyre for it to be regarded as a winter tyre and tyres produced before 1 January 2018 will be exempt from the regulation until 1 October 2024. Where is your source that these tyres must be fitted if it is snowing or sleeting .

But if you look at the link it says only tyres Manufactured after 1st January 2018

"Tyres produced before 1 January 2018 will be exempt from the regulation until 1 October 2024."

So existing M+S only tyres are good for another 5 1/2 years and in non-snow/ice

i was under the impression that tyres were either M+S or with the snowflake but I was wrong as I have just looked at my recently delivered Toyo H09 and they are marked with both.

LOL @nicholsong you might want to read the post above yours ! At least the point is being well made.

If you haven't got them it's not too expensive, €60 fine for holding up traffice or €80 if involved in an accident without winter tyres.

I posted this for information about the change as I’m about to reshoe my van. I spotted this from a post on Facebook by Vicarious books, I then Googled it and posted one of the many links I found. Yes I also read about the exemption for tyres manufactured before that date. I also read about the fines and have no intention of finding out which will override the other.
Information shared, so I feel I have done my bit (y)

@Lenny HB Does that mean you can drive with them without a problem and the only time you get fined is if you get stuck or have an accident? Likelihood of us going to Germany in the winter is low but if we did I don't want to spend a fortune on different tyres.

Yep thats right, I would have thought your van had Michelin's (Hymer normally fit Conti to 15" wheels & Michilin to 16") which are M&S rated which are OK until Oct 2024.

Understood. Just not convinced it's illegal if not fitted when snowing or sleeting.

The other day I was looking at the regulations for Austria and Came away with the impression that they only need the M and S symbol not the snowflakes although this is not what I had been led to believe previously, can anybody clarify ?

I don't drive in the snow

Very difficult to get the correct information for different countries, you get diffent info on different websites and hard to find each countries goverment site with the info. When our tyres are due for a change I will fit either winter tyres or all season ones, saves having to worry about it.

Me neither if I can help it but have been caught out a few times. I was thinking all season or winter as I need to change anyway, this has convinced me to go down that route
Only some all season tyres have the Alpin marking that is required.

Continental camper tyres are not rated m+s for some reason.
Because the 3PMSF trumps the M+S.

Martin

EDIT oops sorry I was thinking Continental fourseasons, what are the campers marked? I would not be surprised if the likes of Continental drop the M+S mark.

The Conti Cp's have never been M&S rated only the Michelin's.

I use winter tyres all year round with no problems. Although they don't appear to wear any faster for me I understand others think they do. As far as I'm concerned it's just something else I don't have to worry about.
Continental Vanco Winter 2.

With the sort of avg mileages motor-homes do its pretty much a no brainer to just fit winter tyres and use all year . That is the route Ill be taking , as having two sets at £4,000 a set doesn't add up .
