NEW RADARS ARRIVE

The next generation of speed cameras have now arrived in France. In addition to controlling speed without the need for a flash, the new generation of turret radars will soon also be able to control offences such as using a telephone while driving, not wearing a seat belt or not respecting safety distances. All of the same seriousness, these offences are punishable by a €135 fine.

From the December issue of MOTORHOMINGFRANCE
They've got them here in the UK now in a few places. From memory they use AI to recognise if the driver is holding a phone or not wearing a seat belt.

they have had that in spain for a few years.
buy one of these to drive in

No good if you're driving RHD.

I wonder what the French (and others) make of those of us who drive classic cars that don't have seat belts?

Hopefully a smart enough system to tell between a Smart phone being used as a phone and one being used for navigation ??!!
Mike.
I thought the rules (in the UK at least) applied to 'holding' a phone regardless of what it's being used for.

I can’t see how they can spot seat belt use.

Isn’t this the same story that pops up every couple of years.

The cameras used here have operators. That is what they are employed for . The 'Pegasus' system used from the helicopters will read your number plate from 3kms, also checks for seat belt usage, & if you are holding/using a phone, eating or drinking. Same for any front seat passenger. The cameras can identify you facially they are that good

These cameras, within the report, have been in France for 14 years so far. I was certainly aware of them and believe they can also tell if youre drinking from a cup whilst driving.

Oh, that's OK then, we prefer our Stainless Steel insulated mugs, "don't you know", their invisible to radar.
Mike.

It is possible that these cameras will have a numberplate recognition system that can distinguish what the vehicles are. Cars and HGV'S have different speed limits.
There also seems to be a question which is hanging in the air at the moment about Continent Countries getting access to UK vehicle registration details. Apparently they are and 'the UK do not know how'.

They’ve still got to enforce the fine though, I’ve been flashed loads of times and only once received a letter and that was in a previous vehicle and ignored it….😎

Spain have a reciprocal agreement for info with the Uk dvla.

I read that in 'French conexion' last week.I can tell them numerous ways that the French have obtained the info. Most of them illegal.

My dad used to drive quickly when I was a kid, but always installed seatbelts in all our cars, years before they were a legal requirement, so I have always worn them and feel very uneasy the times that I have been in a car that doesn't have them.

I also think that I would have come out a lot worse off when I spun my mums car hit the grass verge then rolled it over a hedge into an orchard, she was not happy😱😱

There will always be people that quote accidents where people have been thrown out of the car and survived, who wouldn't have if they had a seatbelt on, to try and justify why they wont wear a seatbelt.

But in reality, 90% of accedents are probably not at high speed, and belts have probably saved a lot of chest and head injuries.

Each to their own

I hate seat belts and never wear one, apart from the one in the motorhome, it has a beeper so I wear that one most of the time, and it barely touches me. But every day driving I never wear a seat belt. I’m happy to take the risk. I think it should be up to the individual if they wear one or not, and I’m far safer in a car than on a motorcycle with shorts a t shirt, with a turban on, which is legal. Must be at least 12 years of not wearing one.

If they are paying people to sit there and non stop watch a camera to see who is not wearing a seat belt it shows how much money these schemes generate.

You’re safer with a helmet and HANS device on. Where do you draw the line.

So basically you deem yourself able to disobey any laws you feel like? I for one would not like to be the emergency worker scraping your body parts off the windscreen.

But you would be happy to collect a motorcycle rider that has obeyed the law riding a motorcycle at 70mph wearing a Tshirt and shorts.

So yes. I’m happy to only apply laws I believe in. Would you just do what your told regardless of your own thoughts?

As far as traffic laws and safety, yes, I try very hard to comply.

So if you thought you were safer carrying a firearm for your defence you would regardless of the law?

Do you obey speed limits if you think the conditions allow for faster travel?

That isn’t what we are discussing and is far from it, but yes. If I thought me or my family was going to be attacked by an armed person and I had the option of a firearm I would carry one.

Would you drive your vehicle at 20mph max, wearing a crash helmet , and HANS device, because the rules say you will be safer?
