Hi all, new to this site, found it through Reddit.

Been looking for a Motorhome/camper for a few months now after catching the bug after hiring earlier this year, but finding the choice in my area quite limiting.

Looking forward to learning more and eventually finding our dream vehicle.

Enjoy looking for one, but don't take it too seriously, except for value for money.

Few of us got the first one right, but we enjoyed ourselves whilst we learnt what we should have bought.

Once you have one (any one), you can travel around whilst having fun learning more.

Some say the third one will be your dream vehicle, but you will look back on the other two with happy memories. we certainly do.

Welcome to the House of Fun.

Re your chosen area, many of us travel long distances to buy our motorhomes, so unless absolutely necessary, widen your search area?

As suggested, if you pay your joining fee then you get access to the classifieds where members advertise their motorhomes for sale.

Try not to jump straight in, it's great that you hired before buying, but do you know what you actually 'must have' as opposed to 'would like'? Do you want a motorhome that you can improve or must it have certain 'things'? The layout of a motorhome or camper can't easily be changed but 'toys' can be added further down the line.

PS There is also a very good guide to buying a used motorhome available to full members ...

Definitely worth paying your subs to become a full member and then you'll find a really helpful buyers guide in the resources section.
It'll give you things to think about that haven't even occurred to you yet 👍

Google for dealers in your area, I’m sure you will find a few, go on autotrader and search within 20/30/30/40/50 miles of your area, loads will come up.

Layout is the most important thing. Look at as many vehicles as you can before deciding. You'll probably find the right van will "talk to you" so to speak. And could just get a "feeling" that this is the right one for you. That's how it worked for me anyway, and I wouldn't change it for anything else now - 8 years on.

I’d make a preferred features list and go from there (y)

Welcome.

Rent, at least one, ideally two or three before you buy.

It will show you that what you thought you wanted (and the salesman told you you wanted) is not the same as what you actually need.
A motorhome is all about layout vs budget.

As for the area, you will need to expand that considerably, I'd suggest, given where you are, all of England except the West Country and Scotland except the highlands.
Many of us have bought the 'right' motorhome hundreds of miles from where we live.
(My dealer would be a 350 mile round trip if I ever went back)

:hi2:w2f:cheers: Youtube could be your friend here. Have a look at the Motorhome man. He's a dealer and gives a youtube run through of all the vehicles he sells plus useful tips. He also shows vehicles he wont sell (but moves on) due largely, to age.

And list what you don't want as well - just as important.

Would it be fair to say you had a bad experience? I know we did and we were just looking!

Just remember one golden rule: the perfect motorhome barely exists because it varies from every individual's requirements. Layouts and types are a comprise of your priorities. That is all. Good luck and welcome to a fantastic little club

Welcome. Motorhome trader.Ebay, but littered with scamsters. Anything that seems to cheap will be a scamster collecting deposits.
Pay to join the forum, you will never get better value from anything. No question will go unanswered, even if you thinks it trivial, or silly, ask away. There's a self help search area, always worth a look, what ever you're looking for will have been asked beforehand.
Mike.

Hi Newkybroon, I’m also new to this site, but I post because 26 years ago we were in your position. We went to motorhome shows, looked at what was on offer but most importantly, having short-listed suitable vans we found the club areas on the showground and spoke with owners - sometimes at length.
We wanted a coach built on a Ford 2.5litre turbo of roundabout 6 metres in length.
A few months later we came across the exact model we had singled out and only two years old. The deal was done and we still have it now. Many times we have looked at new vans but have always been so thrilled to get back to our van because it is so good.
There have been replacement pumps, a water heater, taps, addition of an Eberspacher space heater, a solar panel, etc. over the years - a bit like Murphy’s axe all original except for...... and I have reupholstered it twice, had new bespoke mattresses made - as you do. But over the years, all much cheaper than changing the motorhome.
We lived in it in France for 9 months of the year for 13 years and it was fabulous.
I have had it serviced and MOT’d by the same young man throughout all 26 years (no quite as young now), he tells me never to get rid of it as they don’t make them like this anymore.
So - take your time, do your research, it is a big investment which will pay you back in spades with the pleasure it affords.
Good luck in your search.

Good luck. We have been searching for a year. With a max healthy budget it’s still been a challenge. Right now we are poised to purchase. Deposit paid and view tomorrow. Wishing you luck .. nearly there!

The only bit of advice, and it may not be relevant in your case. If you buy new you may find that your local dealer will only undertake warranty work if you bought it from them, unlike cars. Other members may have found different but it's something to consider. Also if it is a used van then bear in mind that you may need to return to them for any aftermarket warranty work.
