New Garmin Camper 1090

I just yesterday read that most all such apps use roughly 5 meg of data per 100 miles of journey..
No matter what plan you are on data costs money, so the cost of a couple of years use for me would would pay for a dedicated GPS :)
That sounds a lot...
"Google Maps use around 0.6MB of data per hour and Waze uses only about 0.23MB an hour and it will go lower than that if you plot your directions or maps while you're on Wifi.
Mobile data needs to be turned on for the GPS and other location services running in the background but they, too, use less data.

Maureen could be right. Alternatively we have had many happy times discussing whether they are all a con and in reality the instructions are from a real person in a call centre with an atlas ..... ;)
Jeez. Hope they can't hear what I shout back at it.:LOL:

Lot of those in Cornwall too, even the 'main' roads are only passable with extreme caution. Used google maps down there when visiting from Scotland and have often wondered if purpose built - enter width of van etc - satnavs would have saved my blood pressure driving down barely van width winding roads with 20 foot high hedge rows that you can't see round 'til you meet summat nose to nose coming the other way and nowhere to pass! Happy days :)
Get yourself the Sygic Truck SatNav app for a smart phone, much cheaper than the Garmin and you can buy a good smart phone if you do not have one already for less than the Garmin by a long way by paying for Sygic and the phone

There is a thread running about how much data is needed ( primarily about tv I think ) but a link on there led to a site that listed a lot of things, mapping and gps use being one of them.. I got the info from there

As a back up I bought one of the cheapo chinese lorry sat navs.. It was £27 and works like a charm.. Based purely on price that MUST be the most bang for bucks available !

As I have found out, updating the mapping is the major issue with them. I have one which works very well buffer a while the website for mapping updates just vanishes.

these are fine until you come to updating the mapping, I have had two, the first gave up the ghost and the second has the updating issues as to where to get them.

Being Scottish - equivalent of a Yorkshireman but with generosity squeezed out - been using a free version of CoPilot on the tablet though not sure how much better/worse it is than a paid for app. Will check Sygic out though :)

Whilst I have not used any 'Truck' satnavs, the garmin units we have (3) have the ability to plot routes in 'Truck' mode.

Without fail, the routes go to the nearest motorway/dual carriageway completly ignoring other A or B type roads even though they are suitable for mohos... missing out on some vey pleasant motoring, particularly across the channel where generally there is a wider choice of roads to use.

Do Truck satnavs do ths?

Works well on a... 10" tablet with sim card, as well. Even if you buy a top-of-the-range tablet it'll still work out cheaper and you get to use the tablet for other stuff too. Garmin always appear considerably overpriced for what they are. The Apple of navigation?

Having used Tomtom and Garmin, I agree with that. My current Garmin says "in 200 metres enter roundabout". Yeah, but then what? I need to know which exit, in order to know which lane on entry.
My garmin doesn't speak.
I've turned the volume off and I look at the screen

Hello everybody,
I came across this chat because I was looking for info about the Garmin Camper 1090, whether someone can already report on experiences, how it performs in real life.
And just because the topic also came up on apps, I wanted to drop this Android app for motorhomes in here as well: Camping.info by POIbase.

The navigation app calculates the route based on vehicle data such as width, height, axle load, etc. and avoids toll roads, displays road restrictions (for vehicle weight, height, width) on the route or simply on the map while driving.

But apart from that, if anyone has had firsthand experience with the Camper 1090, I'd be interested in feedback.

Click on the 8” a bit less at £479.99 . Already have the last Avtex Garmin which is great , I find Garmin easy to work with with simple and frequent map updates.

I like my old Camper 760 which I’ve had for a few years.
I almost upgraded to the new 1090 a few weeks ago when Garmin had a price offer on it. I think it was a £60 reduction but I’ve just looked and it’s back to £639 on their site.
When I dragged my 760 out of its drawer after several months of non use it refused to charge or do anything. However, I persevered and it finally charged and is now back to its former self. Phew! That saved a few bob.

I'm a newbie - have been using Google Maps for SatNav for years in the car and now do it in the van with a Pioneer radio that is controlled by an App on my phone, also giving access to Maps, Spotify and other Apps by way of big buttons on the dashboard unit. (It also means I can turn it off without getting out of bed).
I've been taken to a couple of width-restricted roads by Google, but only when we've deliberately set a meandering route avoiding Motorways so we can see more of the UK from our now higher-up seats, so it's sorted of added to the mystery. Are there any serious downsides to using Google rather than spending what seems to be a lot of money on Motor Home satnavs?
Putting dimensions in which is almost a necessity abroad in some areas.

Maps.me works perfectly without any data at all and uses GPS still no data usage.
Probably a few more out there like that

I use Google Maps which works well for me.

You can download maps to your device using home WiFi ahead of travelling so you don't need to use mobile data.
I did this for a recent trip around Scotland for areas that didn't have mobile signal.
Some functions such as live traffic and alternate routes don't work, but you can just go back on to mobile data if you need this at a particular time.

The blurb about how to do the offline thing is here -

Ok, thanks. So, I see the old devices are quite durable. 😅 That’s good to know.

It’s taken us around Europe many, many times without too many problems.
However, Mrs. Garmin does get shouted at from time to time when she insists on trying to take us on a daft route or, worse still, goes dappy and loses the plot just when you get to a complicated junction with loads of traffic.
For those reasons I also have CoPilot running on my iPad at the same time.
Belt and braces. (y)

Richard.
