Dewalt do a similar inflator if you have their batteries

That would be handy for our inflatable canoe.
Non diyer question, can you charge the batteries direct from the mains or do you also need a stand alone charger as well as a battery?

Not really, these are usually high pressure low volume. It would take forever. There are other rechargeable handheld pumps more suitable. There are some really cheap 12v ones that are very good but they usually need finishing off with a foot pump or such like to get the pressure up.
