Auto-Sleeper Kingham
Exp
I'm a newbie
Hi. Remember me?

I have previously posted about how I bought a new Auto Sleeper Kingham from Marquis Berkshire (deposit paid 14th Aug, full amount paid 22nd Aug). I won't repeat everything again but suffice to say that I still don't have the vehicle.

Every time I contact Marquis (about ten times over the past weeks) they tell me that they are awaiting the V55 (brand new vehicle registration) from the DVLA. Today I called the DVLA who told me they have no record of the registration request. I immediately called Marquis to find out what's going on.

Turns out the salesperson I dealt with has left. I spoke to another person who was more forthcoming. They have told me that they need to get a code from Peugeot (makers of the base vehicle) which gets sent to the DVLA and that is what they are still waiting for. They only get these codes released to them each Friday. Apparently the person who does that is currently off work. Unbelievable.

The guy I spoke to told me this happens with everyone buying a Peugeot (small comfort) and that I should've been warned (I wasn't). I was told there was nothing they could do other than wait.

I have written to their head office to complain because I find this completely unacceptable. They have £80k of my money and I am paying out for insurance and I don't have my van.

I just don't know what to do any more. I have seriously considered starting a refund process but I really don't want to do that as I have fallen in love with the damn thing and have prepared so much.

It would be bad enough if Marquis were to tell me 'Oh, it'll be another two weeks' or something but they've said they are unable to provide any timeline and are 'in touch with Peugeot every day'. Every week they tell me the same thing, that they hope it will be with them on Friday and then the following Monday they tell me same thing.

I would definitely warn against purchasing from Marquis. This goes beyond bad service.

I hope it works out for you sooner than later. It's very sad in deed when you hear about these situations. And wonder what is the best route to go down. Your obviously not getting a final date. I think you need some rational legal advice to see where you stand. We can all chip in but every case is different. You need advice on your case. Everything crossed it works out to your satisfaction.

I would contact the police fraud squad whilst obtaining a county court type thing and 100% get the keys move into motorhome or drive away. You didn't spend 80k on a number plate you bought a motorhome.....it's yours it 100% belongs to you, you have receipts and bank transfer witnesses from bank. Go to showroom get keys and drive it away put it on drive remove wheels steering wheels battery and chain it to something. Then wait on court response and contact DVLA and ask for a reg number.
The first house I bought the previous owner and estate agent tried something similar.....however my girlfriend worked in the bank I got my mortgage from and told me my money had been transferred 10am in morning to pay for house. The estate agent wouldn't release keys that day saying the money hadn't gone through. I forced the door of my newly bought house and lived in it, changed locks added locks. Police came a few days later with following up a phone call that I'd broken into the house, I explained they said no bother good on ya for securing what is yours.

True, but if you were buying a 'brand new' vehicle you would expect it to be registered to you roughly around the time you bought it.
TBH I didn't really care. I never kept them 2 years .
Sell up and look for another bargain.

But we digress ;)

I really don't understand why anyone would pay the balance before the day they collect it.
I have a van on order quite a bit over 100k, I've paid a £500 deposit and will pay the balance on collection.

Go to the dealer insist on the keys and drive it home, that would be the sensible thing to do. They can't stop you, it's yours you paid for it.

It can't be insured. Imagine if they had a prang.

I think that's what the OP expected too, shame he's still waiting!

It is insured already & has been since the day he paid on the registration number given to him at the time.

I know you have fallen in love with the van but confidence and trust with the dealer is broken - I’d insist on an immediate full refund and go elsewhere - the NEC is next month, May be worth going and seeing what similar vans are actually in stock? A quick look on Autotrader and it’s claimed Derby Motorhomes and Moran motorhomes in Ludlow both have a brand new auto trail Kingham ‘in stock’ - worth travelling extra distance if that’s the case Not to have it from Marquis now!

I too would be hiring a transporter and parking it front of the dealership gates. Therefore blocking the entrance to end all there bulls--t, and get a satisfactory result to this situation, especially if I had paid them £80,000 with nothing to show for it.
I'm with you on this one.

If they wont deliver it for you.
(As something dodgy going on)

They wont give you trade plates
(as they know you will not be giving them back until you have the V5)

Then you arrange your own delivery.
Low Loader outside the dealership that blocks everything until the vehicle is loaded.

We had a local estate agent who had ripped off a tenant.
He parked his motorhome outside the premises every weekend for about 4 weeks with banners all over it, and ensured he spoke to every person that even glanced at the window.
The police quite correctly said it was a civil matter, after a month they paid him off.

As I’ve said before, tell them you want your money back, they’ll soon get it sorted, if you want it that much then say you want your money back and you’ll pay them when you can drive it away…

There’s definitely more to this then just registration… a loan on it perhaps…?

What is it going to be like when it comes to a warranty situation, or a service…🤷🏼‍♂️ once you’ve got it I wouldn’t take it back to them for anything….

Get yourself to the NEC with a massive placard, either that or as much as I know you want the vehicle, I would demand a full refund. its now way beyond a joke

As I posted before, apart from the parting of money in advance, the delay you are experiencing is similar to what happened to me, in my case I was told the problem was with Fiat. It did get sorted, but took a couple of months. Marquis have given you appalling service and I wander if a sales person wanting their commission was the driving force to persuade you to make payment in advance. I’m sure it will be sorted eventually and I think if it was me I would hang on in there for a bit longer having waited as long as you have already.

I very well might have purchased 1 possibly 2 Mobilvettas from them had they not been the only dealer supplying them from new. They are our nearest dealer by far and not one of our 4 m/h did we seriously consider them for. Get that transporter over there and if all fails I know some pretty nasty scaffolders who break legs for fun.

One of Chasers better ideas ;)

I'd phone them right now and tell them you have a transporter to pick it up on Monday morning. You should be able to get a good read on where they are really at from their response.
Right since I posted my idea, I have changed my mind ,as I am always liable to do;)
If he does get a transporter and fetches it which he is entitled to do, it's going to cause a lot of bad feeling down the line if something goes wrong with it, and the dealer could come out and say , well you fetched it you look after it.
No I would say , tell them you want it this week or your money back.
It's not going to hurt them, they probably have someone already lined up to buy what is still a new unregistered van.

I have given them an ultimatum. I've told them that it needs to be proven resolved by Friday 29th or I shall be contacting Trading Standards as they sold me the vehicle under false pretences. Those being that I had a date and time to go and pick it up (Tuesday at 12 noon) and it was only on the three days prior to that they told me I could not. That was five weeks ago.

That sounds a sensible first step. If they don’t respond then I would seek legal advice. Between now and then it may be worth finding out if any of your insurance policies include legal cover.

I would also send an email to that affect too.
Then you have proof if needed.

But I guess the insurance company would refuse to pay up on the basis of no V5?

we threatened a dealer with either pulling out or them providing a free loan vehicle until such time as they could deliver, but that said we had only paid a £500 deposit.

The problem is, { some rogue dealers} they exist in the margins. They know exactly what they can get away with, it's their stock in trade, and the fact that they know the only rights you have are those you can afford to pursue in litigation. They will have all their ducks in a row so as they own nothing nor do they have any assets, they have no discernible income either. CCJ? Another worthless sop for the masses, they can safely ignore those as they have no assets.
When really pushed to the wire, they shut up shop and restart under another title.
This is not all dealers, but the ones described as above are out there, and waiting to part you from your money with any lie that will assist in that.
Mike.

Hi bit out of the blue but are you able to go to the dealers and view your van? Is there a possibility they have sold yours to someone who made them an offer higher than yours but wanted the van straight away and they are now trying to delay you till they get another van in?

Not being pedantic, but some motorcycle are pre-registered to boost sales figures.
I've bought a few like that at big discount with letter from dealer saying I'd really bought a new bike.
That is done with cars too. But they have to be sold as second hand. My wife's Jazz was registered to Honda, along with a lot more. 3 months later Honda released them to the dealers, who sold them at a reduced prices. She got a good deal, but is registered as the second owner. I think the VAT rules required that they had to keep them for 3 months before selling.

Hi. Yes, I've seen it several times. First when browsing, then I went back to put the deposit down, then again when I paid the full remainder (because they told me I could drive it away three days later), then again a couple of weeks later when the gave me an 'official tour' of it and explained how everything works. At that point they'd taken it off the main foyer and it was round the back of the dealership.

The next time the OP sees "his" van it might be on a stand at the NEC ...
