National Trust Overnighting Pilot

It says:

The National Trust car parks in this area do not permit overnight camping or parking. We understand many people want to enjoy spending time in the outdoors but there can be an unintended impact on flora, fauna and wildlife.

Why does the National Trust not allow camping at their car parks?

  • Sadly, many visitors leave rubbish, empty glass bottles and disposable BBQ’s which pose a risk of fire.
  • There are no toilet facilities and so human waste and used toilet paper is often left in hedges. This isn’t good for wildlife or nice for our rangers when strimming or undertaking other conservation work.
  • There is no planning permission in place and camping is in breach of National Trust bye-laws.
By not camping you are helping to look after and protect the wildlife that makes this place their home. Thank you.
I agree to some extent but the day visitors will leave rubbish etc too, and are probably more likely to do so as well as cr@pping in the hedges, but they're not banned. As for camping, parking is NOT the same as camping!

Am I being a bit of a snob, but the type of people who are NT members would not then treat the parking area as a toilet. As long as only NT members were permitted to stay overnight, then I cannot see there being an issue, especially if using fully self contained vans not like the VW camper shown, which at best will have a Porta potti.

This point needs to be driven home to the NT board, I will give them my thoughts.

National Trust campsites aren’t discounted for NT members so doubt this trial is free to members.
So, expect payable by all 🙁
Is that still the same. I remember having this discussion at the campsite in wastdale years ago, i had to pay somthing like £6 on top of my camping fees for my tent, to have my car in the campsite, but i could have parked it 20m along the road in a NT carpark for nothing as a member, but even for a non member it was only something like £4.50.
