Mysterious hammering sound help

the left hand drive shaft bearing has been known to literally disintegrate, and makes that sort of noise

I see from the original post that you have been to two 'car shops' by which I assume you mean what I would call motorhome dealers. In my experience most of these know little about the vehicle side and I would go to a proper mechanic who repairs commercial vehicles.

Hi may wheel nuts lose or big nut on drive shafts just a thought Andy

Our recent return trip to Scotland we noticed a steering wheel shake at motorway cruising speeds and thought it might be a simple wheel balancing issue.
Subsequent MOT last week revealed some distorsion and cracks on all four wheels ( van registered 2015 but tyres from 2014, 10k miles, 4250 kg.) Had new tyres fitted and the problem was solved. Originals were VancoCamper and we stayed with these as recommended for the weight. The thing is I had inspected the old tyres myself prior to the trip and could not see anything wrong with them......

I had a similar issue with my mitsubishi pajero. Thought it was drive train related. Took it to a garage who couldn't identify the problem. They did however tell me that my front discs were warped. Charged the discs, knocking gone!
It seems that the brakes were being applied slightly every turn of the wheels, which made the drive shafts knock.
