I applied for my C1 renewal at the beginning of April and took a treadmill stress test on August 6th. I now have a letter from the DVLA asking me to have a DSE (dobutamine stress echocardiogram). The letter makes no reference to the previous treadmill test only stating that it is based on my medical history. Has anyone else been sent down this route? The consultant at the treadmill test said that the ECG had shown "some changes" during the test but did not expand on that. I thought the test went well but presumably this has caused the DVLA to want more tests. I've no idea what concerns they have or whether I should be worried about it. How do I find out? In the meantime my prediction of not getting my C1 renewed by Christmas (if at all!) looks like coming true!

I shall be 70 tomorrow and although in excellent health and not using glasses to drive I have opted to loose my C1. I have not used it in the last 30 years and don’t want a van larger than mine is now.

Well saints alive! I've just been onto the DVLA website to check license details and it seems I have a full license again. Nothing in the post yet. Valid from 14th December for three years. So not backdated at all. Looks like they pulled their finger out after getting the result from my DSE test a couple of weeks ago. C1 included. Applied on April 11th so just over 8 months with two stress tests. A nice Christmas present from the DVLA.

My C1 will run out in February. I am in good health unless someone tells me otherwise but had a quadruple bypass in 2008.
So from all the research I have done plus all the comments on here I don't think renewal will be simple with stress test at very least.
We have a 3500kg van at present and will probably never have the funds to replace it so reluctantly I think I will forego all the hassle and give up C1.
Being a former race driver and advanced instructor it severely dents my pride though.

Just out of curiosity, on the treadmill do you have to walk or run? In this woke life isn't this ageist?
I wonder how many under 70s would pass a treadmill test or a heart stress test 🤔.
All them I hope if they're to be trusted driving a motor vehicle. If you can't pass a stress test at that low level you are not fit enough to drive - simple as that.

Have you taken a stress test? Having done it and passed I wouldn’t describe speed walking up a steep hill as low level, it would be easier if you were allowed to run.

Yes - I did one about a year after my heart attack to check I was OK to up my running and to restart diving.
Treadmill (or drug induced) stress tests are a widely used standard test for basic cardio vascular fitness. The level required for driving should be achievable for anyone who is moderately fit. You're not tested to failure in order to establish your maximum Mets, but just to a level that proves you are sound enough to drive a motor vehicle.
