My £750 Dell Inspiron has a broken lid: apparently a common fault and no redress! (1 Viewer)

I bought this i7 PC on April 1st 2020 and the screen lid has had little use as I use a 24" monitor and wireless keyboard. The lid hinge nuts were set too tight at the factory and eventually they seize and the lid breaks off! There are videos about telling us mugs how to loosen the nuts...
Dell won't take any responsibility for this manufacturing fault so that's £750 down the swanny!
I'm going for a desk top PC, probably this one as it gets good reviews. It should run Fusion 360 CAD OK.

Most of my life in one form or another
If they didn't make things to break, we would never have to buy new ones . They ain't daft.

C'mon John Barrett

You should know that, not withstanding that Dell don't want to know, I'll bet a Judge at the Small Claims Court would.
2 yrs is not enough time for a laptop to last, especially one with little use.

I have a similar problem with screen hinges on my HP laptop. The plastic hinges have seized up and snapped. It is long out of warranty. Likewise a previous old Zenith laptop. Better hinges would cost pennies.

As Emmit says it might be worth getting an techie report on it and submitting that to Dell (assuming it supports your case!) along with supporting evidence from the web for a claim under unfit for purpose.

I would maybe question your thoughts on a Celeron processor in the desktop you're thinking about for running CAD software, though!

^^^^^^ what he said. 6 years is the minimum expected life of any type of electrical product under eu legislation.

Thanks for the advice. The Dell is i7 and NVIDIA so is lightning fast! I use the CAD for simple 3D Printer files. I'm not working on anything remotely complicated!

You'll have better knowledge of the stuff you're going to use it for but, personally, I would be wanting to do any more than web browsing, simple documents, etc on a unit with a Celeron processor nowadays.

The laptop spec seems better than the desktop you are thinking of, you normally use an external monitor anyway, so why not just keep the laptop connected to the monitor?

My current train of thought, I'll just leave it open for the time being.
Great minds think alike...

Poor show that John, but get the engineering grey cells into gear and get it fixed ! :X3:
You were quite correct. I managed to get in and loosen the hinge nut. Some epoxy dough moulded around the hinge plate to refix it and when it hardens all will be well!

I have a very similar (if not identical) DELL laptop bought at a similar time.
So far the lid doesn't seem too tight, but thanks for the advice & I certainly don't have the money to buy a new laptop just now, so I don't want this one breaking on me,

KInd regards..Robert.
