Must be getting old.

I think that one comes under the term, "forward planning", Geoffrey old chap. ;)

I tend to stick at 92kph, but if catching up with a line of HGVs, it's mirror, signal, manoeuvre, (making sure Herr BMW/Herr Audi isn't stonking up my nearside at 130kph plus), and I accelerate overtaking the lot, then back down to 92kph again.

It works every time for me, unless of course there is an overall 3.5t restriction, in lanes 2 & 3.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Jock

That is what I am doing staying in lane 2 above the HGV limiters' speed until lane 1 is empty, but on many o thr M/Ways we use it is rarely empty - Poland to Dunkirk/Calais seems a popular route. Best time is w/es when most HGVs are banned.

There is an additional advantage in that I have a better view of the road and traffic a km or more ahead so can plan better.

Geoff

Two years ago we had reason to delay our start by a day but still catch the same ferry to Calais. 505 miles from Perth to Canterbury took 11 hours. Never again. Potentially dangerously tired at the end in spite of stops en-route. and arriving in the dark...

I used to be able to do 5 to 6 hours if not more of driving when we wanted to get across country's fast. We are doing 3 hours a day driving across France and I'm bloody knackered.
We are still managing to do the local tourist bits when we pitch up but it just seems as its such an effort.
I can't wait till after the after dusseldorf salon to do a slow meander along the mosel
Like you Mr porky , I do no more than 200 miles now at lot gentler pace , but on my first ever trip in my then VW Devon back in early 1980's did 700 miles first day Calais down too somewhere beyond Lyon near towards Avignon , but as now 76 (quite a bit older than yourself ) I find it difficult to concentrate & get tired easily.
I think we are all in the same boat, the Mosel sounds great, quality not quantity, time to stop and stare Regards Ronboy

Like you, Mr porky, I think nothing of driving 5 or 6 hours to get across countries. I would rather do that than queue at an airport, sit in a sardine can, arrive at another airport that can't find my luggage and pay a taxi to take me to a charmless hotel. All of which will take more than 5 or 6 hours and won't allow me to see anything out of the window, take photos, eat where and what I like, go for a walk, etc. I feel the same about cruises. Sitting for hours on a boat, making small talk with strangers, eating far more than is good for you and when you arrive in port only seeing a fraction of the country you're visiting.
I love driving. I hope they never take the keys off me. If I could I'd like to drive the hearse to my funeral.
My sentiments entirely, well said .

I would do 'cruising with the wagons' but for two things -

- when it is busy there is always one lorry whose limiter is a couple of kph higher than the lorry that I am behind, so he comes right up my rear looking for his chance to overtake and then is roaring away alongside us for 1/2 km.

- also at 90kph when iy come to a hill my revs are too low to stay in 5th gear, so I have to change down or try to overtake before the hill, because sod's law I am behind the heaviest loaded lorry which is down to 70kph and the next lane is full.

So unless the M/Way is empty I prefer to cruise at 95-100kph and stay out of the inside lane, unless on a 2-lane section.
did you ever get it mapped Geoff? Does a lot to smooth out the step with the 5 speed.

Your out enjoying yourselves and you want us to feel sorry for you  maybe spend less time searching for lovely restaurants ,

Yes Jon, it has been remapped, but I do not like to put too much torque through the drive-train at lowish revs, so I like to keep the revs above 2100, which means approaching hills at 65+mph so getting stuck behind trucks is not ideal.

I'm on the way to Silverstone for some motor racing.
Once upon a time I could get all my gear, tent, food etc. in the back of an old car with plenty of room to sleep in the car if needed. Not a care in the world.
Now I packed the van yesterday, all the just in case stuff, 2 sat navs (I know the way) and enough clothes and food for a month.....I'm getting old😀

Some years back when I was in my mid sixties, I did 550 miles in a day from Issiore to Portsmouth via Dover/Calais in a Ford Focus. That was a long old day. Toughest bits - The Francilliene and the M25.

good practice not to overdo it. I agree with you about staying ahead of the trucks btw

Well that showed me to be cocky, just had a blowout on the motorway in Germany 1 1/2 hours from dusseldorf.

I'm going to Austria at the end of next week and have allowed 2 full days and a morning to get to Salzburg from Somerset although I am going to get 2 or 3 hours up the road towards the tunnel after work to try and break the long driving a bit. Like some others have said, working has a huge effect on pressure to get where you are going!

We regularly do a run up to Wigan from Southampton. On our last run back, we used a non-motorway route which took 6 hrs instead of 4 (ish) but actually left me feeling a lot livelier at the end of it, with only two short stops.
Not the first time we've done this sort of route: I think having more driving to do rather than just droning along the motorway, helps.
Wow what speed do you travel at. We are Soton based and it takes 7hrs to get to Manchester using M ways

We have an almost 400 mile journey to get to the chunnel, but it's a recognised fact in these parts, that the longest stretch of motorway in the world is Carlisle to Penrith !

At least the scenery up there is nice. My least favourite motorway is the M40, just feels (to me) like it goes on for ever...

Well if it needs new tyres you are in the right place buy some, buy 6 new tyres and get a new van for included ;)

wow. always think of that as one of the easy bits. M25 easily the worst, Birmingham, then silly roadworks at Warrington, then hardly ever used Stack stuff on M 20. In fact nearly every bit of Motorway below M6 j34 is pretty awful.

And roundabouts galore. :(

Which is what we hope to be doing again, a week today Simon. ;) That'll be afyer doing Calais to Zell in one hit.
Are you and Marg going this year?

Me too Jon. I find that manual gear changing helps to keep me focused on the road and driving conditions/situations. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)
Doubt in Jock, not sure the dogs up to it🤔

Flipping heck Mr porky you are only a youngster by Fun standards.
I prefer not to do more than 100 - 150 miles in a day but will do 350 if I need to push on.
Us too just take your time and enjoy Been racing about all our life what with working and running the kids about I now everyone as not retired yet Life is about living & enjoying at our time of life 150/180miles a day then it's G&T time

Growing old is a pain but my people tell me the alternative might be worse...

JJ
Ronboyracer: like the song says "Keep on going till the end of the road" I've never stopped "running" since my late wife passed away Christmas 2005 , but what an adventure, the trick is keeping it going
especially in today's economic climate.😊🐕

Keep on running so when they finally catch you you can say it wasn’t you, it was a big boy who ran the other way.
I have been living on that principle since I was 5 years old. 🤒

The other good point to slowing down is everyone racing past you are using a lot more fuel;) more money to spend on G&T's
