I'm a newbie
Hello, I managed to get my Motorhome stuck on my grass pitch at the storage locker yesterday, the site owner towed the van off which was fine, I struggled for 45 minutes before hand before asking for help, does anyone have first hand experience of what I can buy to get the front wheels out of mud, there seems to be a lot of items out there but a recommended product is always good.

I have a set of mud grips for sale. They are a pair of connected wedges about 10ft long that you lay out in front of the vehicle with a long string tied to the rear so you get trip and keep going until on firm ground and the mud grips are pulled out of the mud behind you. I have just sold my MH so they are available for £20 plus postage

I made up these blocks which act as levellers as well always sit on them and they do not damage grass too much so campsites are happy to see me on them. They are five pieces of 3"x2" with long coach bolts clamping them, the old webbing is so that when I start to climb them they are not fired back out. Once on, the 2 feet of run before decent gives sufficient momentum to just keep driving to hard standing. I turn away slightly once off them to prevent rear wheels trying to climb them and always start off in 2nd gear to reduce the torque trying to spin wheels like in snow. Makes it easy to get beneath to maintain chassis, springs, drain oil etc.

I have successfully used snow chain devices.

Are you sure about that, I had a pair of the flexible grip mat and when I need to use them they were utterly useless, gave them away and bought a couple of pairs of the 1200mm rigid fibreglass sand embedded ones which have got us and others out of the more on several occasions.
Agre useless they fly out the back of the Tyre

I bought 4 of those type of grids. Cut them in half to give me a 2 metre runway . Look on Amazon. I used to carry them in the garage for use on wet grass rallies but for what you want bed them into your pitch

Brand: Renocell eco-friendly innovation

Renocell Eco Pave Gravel Grids - 4x Grids = 1 Square Meters - Grass Gravel Retention - Made of 100% Reclaimable Plastic - Landscape Gravel Grid System - Ground Stabilization

If your van has Traction+ and you suspect you might have trouble getting off the pitch, turn it on BEFORE you make several attempts and dig a hole.

If you have an a-class, check that your towing eye actually fits before you need it. Often the bodywork doesn't line up!

I wrote this article last year that is worth a read.

I recognise that photo illustrating Jim's article. ;)

Astonishingly, I managed to reverse out of the mud hole without any aid or grip mats, even though the van had a comfortmatic gearbox. But yes, it did have traction+. Nobody was more surprised than me when it actually worked! :giggle:

Thankfully no harm done other than slightly damaged pride.

Having said that, I extricated myself from soft sand once with the help of a shovel and Milenco grip mats. They are compact and convenient to store in a PVC and after that success I bought another pair, so always had 4 on board... but then never needed them in anger. Handy for using to park on wet grass though. (y)

so are mine and are too heavy for me to throw around or even just use. ought to sell them
Yes they are a bit heavy, I’ve just lifted two and the three brackets up to the roof all fastened to each other😱

I think if I was buying some I’d go for the 25mm ones👍👍

The problem is when you have parked up on the grass, not boards etc. None of the boards, mats, bread boxes etc are any good unless you have already parked on them. I am considering those airbags that you inflate with your exhaust to lift the van so you can slide a mat, or whatever, under the wheel. No chance of using the van jack as you will already be sunk in a hole too deep to get them in. How do I know?
We got stock last November and succeeded in the jacking up both front wheels (one at a time) to get mats properly underneath and dig out an exit route. Surprised how robust the Ducato jack was. Don’t let anyone else give you parking directions unless they’re going to help dig you out (they did).

View attachment 1014653...Two of these and the jobs sorted!

I have something similar. They are ex-army, and they roll up nicely. They are quite a lot wider and a little less bulky. I purchased them after getting stuck once for the three days it took to get the van out. I have only had to use them once to help out a fellow camper, and they worked well. I guess they are a metre wide each and about 3 metres long so lots to play with once you get them under the wheels. Bugger to wash down mind but hey ho what's not to like. Similar to these...https://www.govsales.co.uk/index.php/search-results-by-description/11723-self-recovery-matting

So, have you actually used a set to get out of a muddy field or just like the look of them ?
Ours are actually a meter long and 30cm wide. Yes we used them on the Delaware we had. Got a little stuck down at Exe Valley site. Had to use them to help getting off the grassy knoll there. Saved the pitch from getting dug up. One of the wettest blooming seasons we had too !
They are excellent to be honest. I actually carry two sets . They are small enough to lose in a locker but well worth the money
