MPG - 3 liter V6 Diesel Mercedes Benz Automatic (1 Viewer)

Evening folks

New to us 2012 Adria Polaris 7.5m with a Merc. Sprinter front end .
Wondering if anyone on here has a similar motorhome motor
V6 3 Litre AUTO box Diesel and what would the average MPG return be ?

Saying MPG is not important is like saying I don’t look for cheap fuel, and as we know us funsters don’t look for the cheapest diesel
But having a 3.0 Iveco it’s not really a problem returning 35MPG as long as I do not exceed 70 mph

There are a lot of very optimistic mpg responses . I've had 3l v6 cars that never got some of those figures. And they didn't weigh upwards of 3.5t and shaped like a semi detached

Never understood the fixation over how many MPG you will or will not get from said motorhome..
If it needs fuel it needs fuel..OR don't use it.

Poor mpg can indicate a problem with the vehicle, not to worry though ay just plough on throwing fuel at it.

Our V6 mercedes car averaged low 30's urban, motorway low 40's

....I can remember the registration numbers of a lot of them too. Not all as that would be Britain's got talent worthy but still a lot of them.


Motorhomes I've only had 11 of them lol so I remember which ones were better on fuel than others.

Thats my broadbrush experience with 3L V6.

All diesel & Auto vehicles.

Loads of variables regarding conditions/speed etc etc.

I'm not suggesting your opinion (on any subject) is not allowed, simply the OP asked a question seeking an answer not an opinion.
I will give an honest answer to the question, I had a 2009 Pilote a class with the 3 litre V6 best average was 23 mpg, hills strong winds and faster driving reduced that to 21ish very smooth comfortable ride but the Sprinter chassis wallows horribly at lower speeds, I owned that one for 4 years and covered 46000 Kms.

Yes indeed.... but please dont take this the wrong way, and I am not being flippant when I say but thats you driving..
My point was that MPG is not only defined by the make and engine size but also by the way it is driven..
You May claim to get that MPG.. and I MAY claim to get more or indeed less and many others owners of said vehicle will also have a figure of what MPH they get..
Asking what MPG a vehicle gets is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string,
Yes there is a ball park figure for such but IMOA too many variatons to get an accurate answer..

AFAIK BMW never built a V6 especially a diesel none intended ! ps I agree with the mpg tho .

I had a CLK 3.2 V6 no turbo, was about 36 motorway, 23-24 in town. The 4.2 AMG engine with turbo ( I think) was about 34 motorway, 18 in town. SHould say both were Petrol.

The diesel variant didn't get much better from what I heard at time.

But for a motorhome I'd wager similar engine would be sub 25 motorway, and 10 or less urban... Thats a lot of extra weight and a lot more of a box type wind profile.

The manual peogeot motorhome we have manages 31 motorway-32 at best. Or about 26-28 on a A road typically, and WAY less urban in start stop, not seen how low as we rarely drive it on that.

I had the same engine in my Vito Dualiner. We used it for towing our 8m caravan that we owned.
On average used to get between 17-22mpg. Not towing around 28 driving very steady.
They were not built for economy but that lovely smooth fast engine. When I sold the van it had 150k miles. That engine and gearbox are bombproof and easily achieve 300k plus. Just get the gearbox serviced at every 80k. Despite being allegedly sealed for life...

Yeah, tbh, all merc auto boxes need service at ~ 80k intervals, our CLK when we got it initially had 80, and hadn't had the service done and the gear changes were not that smooth.

Following service and gearbox oil change, it was buttery smooth again until 160k. Again service fixed, but then someone wrote the damned thing off t-boning me as I was driving back from the garage after that service, so the car died about 5 miles later, as was uneconomic to repair sadly.

I wrote the following car off by spilling coffee into the gearbox control module which the CLK handily put NEXT to the coffee holder (unsealed). I suspect my car was not only one to succumb to coffee related gearbox failure.

I have had two. 1) a 5t Hymer that was flat at the front. 2) a rapido that was slightly less flat at the front and 4.2t

Both were lucky to get anywhere near 20mpg if I were lucky. But If I could be bothered and acted like an old retired person watching the pennies, I could get about 23mpg at 55 mph on a run. But it was should we say, unusual as I like to get places. Both were autos 1 a 2012 and 2 a 2009.

Now, just as a caveat. I have had fiats and Iveco's - The Merc 3-0L auto is the best there is in terms of driveability. The thumping V6 will pull you away from the lights at light speed, up hill down hill and wherever you want all day every day. It's also rear wheel drive and a fantastic pusher to get you off wet fields. I much preferred the twin axle version. But on a MH I think the chasis is too narrow and you get a lot of roll even with air. If I compare it to my Fiat tag axle N&B my fiat is a better all round van by a country mile especially with the ZX gear box, more stable, loads more MPG, decent enough power and a great drive.

But, I have always only looked at the build and never the engine when buying my vans. If MPG is your major concern, either be prepared to drive slower, a lot slower, or give it a swerve.

Completely agree, cant understand the fixation with mpg, given that whatever you have gas to have fuel in it to be of any use thenbthe difference between 15 and 30 for most people is rarely going to be the biggest bill for a Mh owner

It's just another interesting statistic that some of like Jon you are right though 15 or 25 doesn't make a whole lot of difference in the grand scheme of motorhome touring, sometimes I just like a challenge and I see how much I can get out of it, car or motorhome.
