Has anyone successfully used a 12v jockey wheel on a car carrying trailer, looking into it but there are suggestions that there is not enough weight on the wheel for them to work on loose materials. The alternative would be a used caravan mover if I could find one cheap enough.

Many have a footplate built in to gain extra grip.
They work for caravans and heavier trailers so providing the car is positioned correctly for trailer nose weight theres no reason for it not to work.

I tried one on my car trailer, but as you noted, there is not enough nose weight on the 12v jockey wheel to get sufficient grip to overcome the weight/ friction of the main trailer tyres, and on gravel, it just digs a hole.
By the way, I still have the12v jockey wheel in my barn if you want to give it a try. :giggle:

I bought a secondhand Powrtouch caravan mover to fit to my trailer which also sits in the barn, ...... another job on my list of many.

Had a mr Shifta to move my car trailer, it worked but it’s pain to carry when you go away , I now use a handle with a tow ball on it
I would consider fitting a caravan mover

Is there a lock on your barn door.
