Hi everyone. Does anyone out there use a Govivo sim card in their motorhome wifi system, please?

We have an Avtex system with a Govivo sim. It's a great idea in theory - you pay £3.49 per month on the 'holding' tariff, ie when you're not travelling, and £24.99 for 'unlimited data' when you travel in the UK but you only pay for what you use, so if you're only away for 7 days, you only pay for those 7 days at the rate of 24.99. That's the theory anyway.

BUT, on more than one trip away in our motorhome, we've been unable to get any wifi at all. Not only that but their customer service seems to be non-existent.

I'd love to hear your experiences, or any suggestions on alternative data suppliers please.

Many thanks

That sounds like it’s on the expensive side. Our MiFi is on a 30 day rolling contract (Smarty), £10 a month for 30gb (but getting 60gb for the same price at the moment). No monthly retainer. Turn off auto renew so we only renew when we are about to travel.

Travelling abroad is a different kettle of fish as it‘s restricted to 12gb a month.

Never had any issues in UK with it, as we‘ve never used all our allowance.

Thank you. I'll look into Smarty. I did try Giffgaff over Christmas in the second sim slot because thechovivo didn't work. That was 100gb fir 20. But it was much more than we needed. I should have gone for much less gb.
Thanks for your input 👍

We use Smarty and find it easy to use via their app and having disabled auto renewal just renew as we are about to travel as AllesP. Will have to decide what we do when we cross to Europe in June

Always worth looking around for deals. I've had 6 months of Lebara at 1p per month for 12GB. Had 6 sims so 72GB for 6p a month.

I tend to just look around for the best no contract data sim (using moneysupermarket or similar sites) a few weeks before I am due to go on a trip. Lebara currently doing 15GB for £6.95.

Can't comment on issues with the wifi router. We use a cheap spare mobile phone with hotspot switched on. Always worked really well for us.

Has it ever worked, for example when you first turned it on?

If it did work once then the next time it doesn't you will need to look at the setting and see what's up. There may be an app such as Huawei use or you may have to access a web page using for example a tablet connected to the WiFi signal. It may have an address like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.254. Once you can access this page, it will need an admin password, you can get it to scan the network and hopefully connect.

Govivo use the O2 network which I've found to be the worst coverage of all of them. Maybe look for a company using the EE network which seems to have the best coverage

Hi DBK, Yes it worked perfectly the first trip in the UK Christmas 2021. Then it also worked over Easter 2022 and in France during June 2022. But when we went to France in September 2022, after 2 days of working just fine, I received an email from O2 saying I would be disconnected because I had exceeded the limit, even though I had paid Govivo £34.99 before I left for 50GB data in France. I phoned Govivo many times and also emailed many times, without any replies. Finally after about 3 weeks of no wifi, I sent them a very strong email and their Ops Director contacted me and sorted it out. So we were without for a month and he reconnected us for our last week. Then this Christmas and New Year, we were away in the UK and it wouldn't work again. I tried contacting them but I never got a reply, so I bought a giffgaff sim and put it in the second sim slot and that worked perfectly for the 10 days we were away.
After we got home I contacted the Ops Director again to tell him we had had no wifi from Govivo for 10 days and they'd had the cheek to send me a bill for £15! He replied saying he would cancel the bill and contact me to troubleshoot for me. That was over a week ago and despite several emails he still hasn't contacted me.
Yes I can go to the 192.168.2.1 and log into their system but there is no manual to advise you how to do anything on the advanced page, so I've no idea how to re-set or do anything there. It's so frustrating not to have a decent customer services.

Any advice would be very welcome.

I think the best advice is to ignore these obscure providers no one has heard of. :)

Being cut off in France makes sense if you had used too much data. Most providers now seriously limit how much data you can use outside the UK. It was probably in the fine print somewhere that the headline data figure only applied for the UK.

But it is a minefield. I'm still on a legacy deal with EE which gives me 200Gb a month outside the UK but if they ever pull the plug on it I'm not sure who I would switch to and almost certainly it would cost me more for a lot less data.

Can you explain what a traveller pass is please? Do you mean with Vodafone and how many gb do you get for what cost? Thank you.

Thanks DBK. The strange thing is that Avtex, which is so well known, has teamed up with Govivo to offer this wifi. I'm so surprised.

Also it's interesting that the first trip to France for 6 weeks worked perfectly on their 50gb for £34.99pm tariff, yet the second one in September didn't. After the first two days we had only used 6GB so there was no way we could have exceeded the European limit.

It's also interesting that they have now withdrawn the 50gb European tariff and now you use the UK unlimited tariff at 24.99 but in Europe its restricted to 25gb.

Wow, how do you get 200gb from EE in Europe? That's amazing.

Thanks for your help 👍

Vodafone offer unlimited data while roaming for 15 pound for a 15 day travellebuyass. You can but them with any Vodafone sim. Everyone else gives a 12gb per day Limited but not vodafone

It's an old contract. I don't think you can get it now.

I wouldn't read too much into your experience of data use. The providers can be behind the curve and let you have more than your allowance then clamp down and try and recoup it the next month. All part of the game. :)

After firing up our MoHo router with cheapo Giffgaff and Lebara sims for testing in the U.K. I’ve now kept the Lebara with its rolling monthly contract at £1.97 (I think) for 10gb and will cancel and take up the next deal when it expires. Plus I’ve replaced the Giffgaff with the iD deal from Carphone Warehouse at 100gb for £12 on a rolling monthly contract with EU coverage. They are even still including the Xmas Currys inducement of 3 months AppleTV+ subscription!

Oh, wow, that's dreadful. Think I'm going to have to cancel my contract with them. They're causing me so much grief and irritation.
Thanks again for your help and also for the links you've given me for books re travel in Spain etc. Very kind of you. 😃👍

To the person who recommended that I buy a REGLO SIM card from Leclerc for wifi in France - THANK YOU!
I've tried to find your reply so that I could thank you personally but I can no longer find it.

If you read this, I popped into the Leclerc at St Pol de Leon after arriving in Roscoff. It was so easy and the lady activated the card for me in store. I was dubious as to whether it would work but it did. Just put it in the Avtex router, turned the power off and on again and it worked straight away! Happy are we, 140gb for a month and then I'll just top it up with a small amount for our last two weeks.

Thank you all for your contributions. I'm so grateful for all the advice and help I have received since joining this brilliant forum.

Happy travels everyone 🚐😁👍

Ref; UK Sim's -> we are yet to get motorhome, but have a static already at inlaws and use a £5 Three unlimited data data sim, I got 3 for £15/mo all in, so £5/sim/mo and already have a spare for the motorhome. Won't work in EU, but we don't plan to tour EU this summer. Worth noting the inlaws static also has a EE data sim also unlimited, from scancom at £199 for 2 years service prepaid. Can't complain, as worked out at under £10/mo. And it hasn't stopped working. (inlaws static has 2 sims as at weekends the EE service is better, during week the Three)..

Oh dear, I spoke too soon. Having bought a Reglo SIM with 140gb of data for 18.95 euros to use in our Avtex router, in the Moho, and having only used 20gb after 8 days with both us using our tablets, it seems we've been disconnected! No idea why?

Has anyone else encountered this problem please?

Also, does anyone know how you find out the mobile number of a SIM card which is used in a router and not a phone. Reglo say they send the mobile number by text but I don't know where a text goes if the SIM is in a router and not a phone?

Any advice, will be much appreciated.
Thank you.

Most routers have a menu that you can access and see any text messages.

It can sometimes be an app or sometimes an address like 192.168.2.1.

Yes there's a control section in 192.168 etc. I'll see if I can find a message.
Thank you. 👍

I'm in France travelling around on holiday and bought the Reglo SIM in Leclerc. Only used about 20gb out of 140gb so far.
I'm not sure if my Google Translate French would be good enough to phone their help line! 🤔
