Motorhome Weight Check by European Police

Yes. North of Bordeaux
There is a Lay - by on the N10, just past Mansle, heading South towards Bordeaux which is closed - off and used exclusively for checking trucks through out the year. During the summer months we regularly see M/homes and caravans being pulled - in for inspection and weighing.

Thanks. If going that way I will make sure diesel is down to 1/4 and to nearly empty the water - where is there an aire just after to refill the water? I can always ask M. Flic.

First layby outside of Kristiansand, Norway. It was a permanent weighbridge with a sign pulling all >3.5T vehicles in. Meant for lorries and stuff off the ferry but we felt obliged to comply. Not sure what would have happened if we had drove past as our MH is up-plated and visually looks same as an under 3.5T MH. The pull-in was so long that I struggled to see the weight display at the far end of the weighbridge!

The guys operating the weighbridge looked more like Customs people than police…. And they clearly weren’t bothered about us and were amused that we pulled-in!!!

I have done close to 30,000km in France and Spain the last 15 months - all types of roads. I have never even seen any kind of spot check on weight.

What I have seen, however, is four stranded motorhomes due to blown, two quite dramatically, rear tyres. Our van was nearly one more.View attachment 869532 I heard and diagnosed the vibration before it could let go on an autoroute. I’d humbly suggest to anyone that if running fully loaded, or slightly over, make sure you have the best, newest tyres you can have and forget about police. One is a few Euros of fines and dumping some stuff at the roadside. The other could cost you your life.
Been there a few years ago, only noticed it when I looked under the van because there was a damp patch and thought we may have a leak. This was on our first Morelo Palace on an Iveco chassis.

How old were your tyres?

If your motorhome always looks low down at the back, just fit Rear Air Suspension, most are just paperwork to up your weight, but Air Sus stops your rear looking low, so better chance to move on and not stopped.

This thread was a timely reminder as we are heading for Europe soon, so we went to the weighbridge fully loaded for the trip, except for clothes and a few food items. The result came out at 3180 kg, so a fair bit of headroom there for bringing back a few bottles of wine!

I had a blow-out a couple of years ago. The tyre turned out to be 10 years old, although I had bought it 5 years earlier so must have been old stock.

Since then I have changed all 5 tyres and checked all dates before I paid and had them fitted - all 2-3 months old, as I had specified. They can fit the old ones to somebody else. Lesson learned.

We had weighed before leaving and not overweight.

We experienced exactly the same search at the Toulouse Peage some years ago. Although they had portable weighing scales, we weren't weighed, but they were extremely thorough in their search for tobacco products.

Cheers,

Jock. :)
Yes they were very thorough this was near Bordeaux. They trampled mud everywhere. Was not pleased, but thought better about saying anything. They were polite otherwise.

I think this was the one. Had lorries, campers and motorhomes pulled in. The lucky motorhomes were the ones passing as we were all searched. They couldn't fit any more in🤣. I held them up also as I had to shake the mud off the rugs. Tony wouldn't let me get the hoover out though😂. And I took Sam for a little walk as they disturbed him so he needed a wee. They just looked at me while I wondered down the edge of the layby🤣.

I kid you not, when I say that I make them check the soles of their boots, before entering our MH...........including the "armed to the teeth" Para Military Commando style troops encountered at the Tunnel one year, just after terrorist incidents in France.
They have all complied politely. 👍

Cheers,

Jock. :)
